Best thing about the "Knock offs" is that everyone's got the stuff! Any batch deal you get, your sure to get gold nuggets in there, along with the chaff. My favorite is MARX Stoney Smith.
I bought knockoff stuff in 1967-68 to supplement GI Joe with rifles and other weapons. LESLO marked gear can be found in the early 1966-67 Fighting Ace Elite Creations packages . Redbox was found in 1966 exclusive JC Penny’s sets.
I think you just solved one of my childhood mysteries. I now realize I received a "Mr. Action" as a gift from someone at one of my birthday parties. I remember being under the impression he was a sailor or some kind of sea-faring adventurer. It looked like the figures at 15:07! Thanks!
Wow. . .Flashback . . thanks . . .I recall my bro and I getting G.I.Joes, then Dad got us two stiff legged Stoney Smiths to get the rifles. . . Then My brother got a Fighting Yank. . . .and a small suitcase that was a Jeep printed on the side, and it had windows. . We eventually had as many as 15 GI.Joes, and about 6 generic guys, and we had two Captain Actions (way better body/doll)
Great stuff! I have always suspected that most of the KOs we saw in the 70s came out of the same factory in Hong Kong, they just changed the box/card/whatever for each buyer. Those 50 cent KO accessory bags were the easiest way to get more guns for our Joes.
There was another knock-off figure that showed up in either the very late 60s or early 70s called "Hombre." I had one and as I recall, even though it wasn't Hasbro quality, it wasn't terrible. He came outfitted in the duck hunter/beo gam camo trousers, shirt, and bush hat, a green vinyl belt with 2 sets of ammo pouches and 3-bar brass buckle, tall black boots, a hard plastic M1 rifle and a "Family Crest" dog tag. The arms and legs weren't jointed, but of the molded rubber with a wire core variety, so he was somewhat poseable but looked weird as Hell without a shirt if his arms were bent. Edit: He was manufactured by Mego, as a Montgomery Wards exclusive in 1972 to 1973 and sold for the princely sum of $3.44.
I got one of those guys with the groovy sideburns in a discount bin. He had funky bendy arms that were hysterical to pose since there was nothing solid in those arms. It alway amused me how many of the knockoff guys used a knockoff Ken body.
Awesome video, so glad you posted again!! The bearded blow-molded figure with no outfit and no articulation is a bearded Mr. Action. I had several of those growing up. Never saw the more articulated one that has the same head, so not sure about him.
glad you guys are back. I really enjoy your videos and I learn quite a bit from them. Thanks Greg and Ace. I just wish you guys had a brick and mortar store so that I could just drive up to the Dallas area from San Antonio. lol
You can always call ahead and make a reservation to come by and shop. We just have to make sure it's not a day that we will be busy with shipments, etc.
The figures at 14:40 Ace is holding one in each hand, are Mr. Action. They're the bearded version. He's actually the figure I got form Mom as a filler til I got my first Joe. I had him a whole day before someone stole him. In the 90s I bought a MOC replacement which I eventually traded.
Its definitely a possibility. I'll have to ask Ace if he has any. If he doesn't, I'm sure my buddy Brian in Atlanta does. Just gotta get him to come to Texas for the DFW GI Joe & Action Figure show ahead and time so we can film a segment. 🙂
In 1970s in Puerto Rico we had from Suarez Toy House Joey Dinamita ( Joey Dynomite) The clothes were cheap but the sets were decent i used to buy the sets and use it fir my GI JOE'S, Joey Dinamita i used to use him as the bad guys , put some scars on his face, eye patches and boom he was the bad guy, his face look to much like Ken from Barbie, and he had very limited articulation.
Kind of but since Marx was a major high quality toy company I think it was competition more than knockoff. Marx had high powered lawyers who knew how to keep the company from copying Hasbro stuff.
That's a tough question. If it were Marx Stony Smith, I'd say no, but Charlie had a more articulated body. Not knockoff, but definitely in the "inspired by" realm...
@@cotswoldcollectiblesllc With the spate of heads of foreign Joes you've produced it would be fun if you all found a way to make Buddy Charlie Heads. Marx never did them justice with coloring and paint apps. A few years ago I pulled a few resin copies and painted them and honestly painted correctly they are amazing. Big Red (Gi Joe Knockoff) from the Spiegel Catalog would be a fun head sculpt to have as well.
My heroes! Greg and Ace!

Mr. Action kept my Joes' well clothed and equipped during the early 80's :D
Another awesome video. Thanks from Australia
Recently got a bearded Dynaman

Lots of information that no else really has! Thanks!

Hell yes!!
Great show and great info! I learned a few things!
Thanks Ace and Greg
Great review. I got my MP and SP uniforms today. Such great quality. Hope your seamstress is feeling better.

I was gonna make the same comment. Aside from the goofy articulation, he wasn't bad, and he came with some decent gear. =^[.]^=
Awesome video! Really enjoyed seeing some of these crazy knock-off figures!👍
Great episode guys. Very cool seeing a lot of KO figures together. Cheap but golden figures. 👍🏻
Great job, guys! Thanks for the video. Looking forward to the next one. 👍
Great content. Would love to see an Elite Brigade video by the creator.

Expect more each Friday - for the rest of 2024. 🙂

So good to have a new vid from you guys. Enjoying the info on all the KOs. Would you guys ever consider profiling Dynaman and Action Star Hardy?

Do you guys consider Buddy Charlie by Marx a knockoff Joe?

It's Ace and his cheap figures.
Did anyone take over the Patches of Pride add-ons for the vehicles and decals etc.?
That would be awesome, but I haven't seen or heard anything that would indicate such.
Not that I know of. However, there have been others pop up that offer similar items...
