    I watched this performance live last night. This is easily the most impressive thing I’ve ever seen. Her form did not change at all throughout the race, she had not a single bad patch. I remember seeing her 15k split and also noticing her complete relaxation and thinking she would absolutely shatter the world record.

    I have to say, her running form is just about the smoothest I have ever seen. Quite often, both for male and female runners, their hands, arms, legs, and feet are flailing around some much -- especially in the latter stages of the race -- that I can't believe they are going as fast as they end up going. In the case of Gidey, I *can* believe how fast she runs, because her form is just SO flawless and smooth. And, she seemed to be smiling in most of the shots near the end of this race. I think she was having a very special day, and she knew it. Congratulations to her for smashing that world record. I'd love to see her move up to the marathon some day. I bet she'd tear that up too.

      @@yaksofirst2154 Personally I think it's fine and not as exaggerated as you may first think - if you watch her run over all her races you will notice that the swing of her arms varies considerably depending upon how quick she is travelling and how much effort she is putting it. Her arm swing is far less pronounced in the early stages of her races but as she ups the tempo or is under pressure in a race she will exaggerate her arm movement in line with that increase in effort - this is normal for almost every runner. It's worth looking at her across a variety of races to observe this. But I must say that even when her arm swing is at its most pronounced it is still very rhythmic and smooth. Beautiful to watch.

    Gidey has ushered in a new form of racing - the time trial. Similar to time trialist of cycling, Gidey can pace herself extremely well and like them she doesn’t have the kick like Hassan. Nevertheless, it is fantastic to see a person pushing the boundary of what is possible!

    • @jkf9167
      @jkf9167 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      She had world class competitors in this race. It would have been head to head if they'd been able to keep up. It only seems like a time trial because she put them away early.. I understand that on the track/at shorter distances, that she has liabilities related to kick and strategy, and that something like her 5000m record hasn't been accompanied by the kind of wins you'd expect from a world record holder. But her most dominant wins have been on the road at 15k plus. At the 1/2 Marathon, if someone's gonna have to run around 63 minutes, she'll win head to head. Her reputation as a time trial-er is partly because the distances she runs on the track are shorter than her strongest distances. For instance, if her 10,000 meter time is 5 seconds faster than Sifan Hassan's PB, then Hassan can take advantage of her superior kick to win races. But if her half marathon time is more than a minute faster than her closest competitor, they'll have to catch her first. And the way she runs consistent, incremental negative splits, it could feel to her competitors as if she's making a move against them every couple of kilometers.
      I hope she can eventually extend her distance to marathons.

      @@jkf9167 appreciate the comment Josh. I think you are on to something particularly with longer distance. However, if Hassan tucks in and hang on to dear life, I can’t help but think Hassan can pip Gidey at the line regardless of distance. Sort of like a sprinting cyclist sitting on the wheels entire race and just crank it up in last 200m. I believe the pace that they are running drafting do matter albeit not as much as in cycling but enough to be decisive.

    • @jkf9167
      @jkf9167 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@demultiplexdfunc177 Hassan wouldn't be able to keep up. Hassan's WR hour run was 18.93 km. Gidey's 20 KM split today was under an hour, so Hassan would be over a KM behind. Hassan's PB half marathon is 105:15 to Gidey's 102:52. That's a huge differential compared the the 5 or 10 second gaps between their PBs in track events.
      Gidey's main problem as a track competitor is that she's a road racer. A competitive track event doesn't lend itself to the kind of obsessive pacing that Gidey likes to do (did you see how often she checked her watch?). And as you mentioned, Gidey doesn't have a strong kick. However road events are generally won by someone pulling away significantly before the last few hundred meters, and by running negative splits that grind down their competitors. And in a road race, Gidey can draft men if she's leading the women.
