F 15 was never in the running, and F-18 E/F just couldn't meet the requirements - Boeing wouldn't budge on the Poutine heating system or the Maple syrup dispenser.
Gripen was a strong candidate - Saab was confident they could adapt the existing Ikea Swedish meatball heater and lingonberry jam dispenser to work with gravy fries and syrup.

@@brianwright9514 AESA on its own is impressive, but not to this extent. I don't know what kind of air-to-air search capability the EOTS has, but in combination with the radar, it could put out an absolutely minimal amount of energy if any at all before finding the target, then keeping it precisely tracked without emitting any further energy. One capability that they may give it with AESA is to keep up a broad search pattern while not emitting any energy in the specific direction of the target, allowing the F-35 to maintain the situational awareness of having radar without showing up at all on a target's RWR. For every datalinked F-35, another EOTS can be employed and another target can be kept in the dark.

The F-35's Distributed Aperture System will allow it to see the J-11 from any angle. You can't sneak up on one. It's literally the quarterback in the sky running the battle because it knows where everyone is at all times.

    • @GintaPPE1000

Not sure I'd say that makes sneaking up impossible, not in a classic dogfight like this anyways. Some of the things about the F-35 DCS does not model is the F-35's radar can be on and it can't be detected by the J-11. Even with a target lock the J-11 would be oblivious to the F-35's presence until he was hit by an AMRAAM. Even without radar DASS is much better than the IRST of the J-11.

Since some reports state, that the F-35 - with combat load - can outmaneuver a F-16 with a good advantage and that the F-16's have to fly with a clean airframe to even stand a change - I'd assume that the buff of the F-16 actually gives some orientation of the F-35s capability in BFM.
Essentially, as far as it was stated, the F-35 is meant to combine the strenghts of the three planes it is meant to replace and do away with its weaknesses. Since it is not fully where is is meant to be and tons of stuff is classified, it is not clear whether that goal has been achieved yet or not.

A possibly more realistic version of that situation would be things you can do if you suddenly find yourself in a dangerous position and your opponent hasn't noticed you yet.

This was fun to watch and pretty suspenseful. The F35 performed well, I wonder just how good it really is? Eagles were never part of the deal, but Gripens wearing the Maple Leaf would have been the best. I would have loved a hi-lo mix, F35s to run interference and spot targets with F15EXs hauling the missile loads but then again I had a tough time letting go of the tooth fairy. I think the Bock III Super Hornet would have been fine if Boeing hadn't pooped the bed so badly.

You can tell by the gun capability in this case. Only the A variant of the F-35 carries an internal gun. The B and C have to carry a gunpod if they want that kind of offensive weapon.
Said Gunpod is quite noticable, as it is mounted on the central weapon station below the fuselage.
The B and C can be seperated by the "neck" of the B variant with a shortened canopy that is meeting a matching wider section of the fuselage with a large "door" right behind the canopy for the lift fan. The C variant looks a lot more like the A in its canopy design but has significantly larger wings, elevators and stabilizers, which changes the appearance of the whole airplane as proportions change the look quite drastically.
The A variant is the most capable dogfighter though, as it can sustain 9G. The B can only sustain 7G and the C 7.5G. Those are the official numbers at least.
