    I work in the oil industry and I use those green locks almost every day at work for....... Lock out tag out, or LOTO as we call it.
    Those locks have saved many lives over the years worldwide.
    I guess they're pretty easy to pick per this video but nobody in our industry would ever touch another workers lock unless an emergency should happen ( hardly never) but we would use bolt cutters for that.
    Thanks for a great video LPL
    Keep up the fantastic work Buddy 👍👍

    • @trshaw52

      bypass might be faster.

    • @dechskaison2497
      @dechskaison2497 2 ปีที่แล้ว +107

      I want to echo this. LOTO locks are only ever opened with a key and the key is really there to prevent someone from opening the incorrect lock by accident.

    • @benjaminshropshire2900
      @benjaminshropshire2900 2 ปีที่แล้ว +85

      Yup, LOTO is to stop mistakes, not malice. Nobody is going to be willing to shell out the cash for that many locks that offer much more in the way of security, particularly given what they are locked to. What the other people will do to you if you start f***ing around with them is likely more than enough security anyway.
      OTOH, being possible to bypass might arguably be a feature as sooner or later someone will loose the keys and you want to be able to get them off without damaging whatever they are attache to.

    • @gwaeron8630
      @gwaeron8630 2 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      I remember when my work place introduced individual LOTO for all the machine technicians. The first time someone used his he did shift handover and the safety issue wasn't fixed until 2 hours after he had left for home. He had to drive the 45 mins back to work to remove his lock. Always made sure my lock was in my toolbox when I locked it at the end of my shift after that.

    • @twestgard2
      @twestgard2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      In other videos, LPL does mention the application of LOTO locks in their intended use. Obviously if someone is willing to violate the LOTO system, a grinder or snips would also work fine on these lightweight locks. They’re a sign or placeholder, not a security device that’s difficult to remove.

    To be fair, Lock Out, Tag Out locks are not needed to be particularly secure. They're more of a convenient and reliable indicator that someone is working on the equipment. To pick one open would be a truly sinister thing to do, that could even result in death and subsequent murder charges.

    The green American lock padlocks are used for personal protection with high voltage switching devices where I work.
    Any of the engineering staff could simply cut off the lock, but we would never do that (or attempt to pick one) because they are part of the safety system.
    We use these locks because the relatively high tolerances mean that a wrong key insertion is unlikely to open the lock and accidentally remove someone else's protection.

    So.... the listing for the covert companion doesn't list this, so I'm guessing it has to be added separately. Did you remove a spacer, or do some re-organizing to make it fit like you did? • @microwave221
      @microwave221 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was able to get it to work by placing it across from some narrower tools so that they interfere, but comfortably lie next to each other. I may remove the warded picks at some point in the future to have more room or a thinner tool tho.

    • @Eggerhexe
      @Eggerhexe 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I looked at the video carefully and it was added to the back (screws) end. I assembled mine according to the turning tools addition video, and at the far end of it (first step when assembling the back piece over the screws) I have [handle, bypass tool, spacer, then hooks], and on the other side, [handle, two spacers, rakes]. Everything seems to fit well. If using with the turning tools, make sure to use the short screws, not the default screws! I figured that out too late, but if it's easy to put together, YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG. Several times during assembly the whole thing came flying apart like a can of those trick peanuts with spring-loaded snakes.

    On LOTO locks; They are used in plants to prevent accidental usage of equipment being worked on. They do not protect valuables. They are used in conjunction with tie wraps on valves which have almost no resistance to being broken. They are more of a flagging system, there are often hundreds of them in a plant so they don't really need any security features, if someone is that hell bent on starting a piece of equipment they would probably just cut it.

    Yup, Lock-out-tag-out is there for safety, not really security.
    For those unaware: Most LOTO systems are where you physically lock a lock to a piece of equipment's off switch, and only the person who locked it has the key. They are super common in industrial areas, but can be seen in some residential electrical panels. It physically prevents someone else from turning on a mechanical or electrical system while the person who locked the machinery is doing maintenance on it. Like privacy locks, it's there to prevent unintended access, not necessarily defend against someone trying to get through. It's one of the most common trainings that industrial people get. If someone picks a LOTO lock that's on equipment, they will probably be held responsible for any personal damages. Just like your grandpa's privacy lock, it's not a lock you want to circumvent.

    • @the_undead
      @the_undead 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Based off my understanding of the mechanics of this bypass, a dimple flag will not work unless it is very specifically sized because there is a very uniquely sized gap that you have to squeeze a relatively large tool through, and seeing as videos don't convey size of tool very well when you're at this kind of a scale I'm going to assume that most dimple flags are just to small
