  • In this episode of Dan Escapes I install some tannus armour inserts instead of running a tubeless set up on my Vitus Sentier VR. See what I think and what I didn't like about them.

    Hi Dan, to get the tyre sliding on to the correct position on the rim you can try spraying some soap/water solution on the tyre wall. The tyre will then slide to the correct position due to the reduced friction when you add some pression into the tube. Cheers!

    Hey to! Great review. I am a casual rider somewhat similar to you I imagine. Just had another puncture out riding in the woods and started to research different inserts. Preferably something where I would not need to mess with sealants as I also live in an apartment. Anyway, I found your review informative, relatable and honest. Ordered a tannus for my rear. Great review, really well done. Thank you!

      I’ve set up tubeless on my other bikes and although I’m enjoying it, it is a faff to stay on top of. Luckily I have access to a workshop where I can do it but for most people they don’t. These inserts are great at protecting you from punctures and definitely if I was doing a long trip would use them and maybe pared up with a light weight tpu inner tube.

    Great video, I too had the same difficulty installing my Tannus inserts also I had the same tyres as you maybe the're not very stretchable as others but it was a real pain I literally had blood behind my finger nails, tyre was very wobbly in the rim took some time to manipulate it to more or less straight, got there in the end and lots more relaxed to ride knowing its flat proofed now.

      @@DanEscapes UPDATE: I fitted the Tannus Armour last Sunday, and I haven’t suffered any punctures since.
      I’m very happy with it.
      I ride a Gravel-Bike through the forests here in Berlin almost every day, maybe 50km, that’s 350km for a full week and without fail I have had to fix a puncture on every ride, but only ever on the front wheel.
      So I fitted just one Tannus Armour on the front, and and it’s completely cured the puncture problem.
      To counteract the added weight of the insert (260g), I fitted Tubolito inner tubes front and back (2x35g=70g) which has resulted in a total weight increase of just 80g.
      According to various online tests the Tannus Armour is supposed to add 13.6 Watts of rolling resistance to a tyre, but my subjective experience is, that although the tyre with the Tannus insert may now be harder, and has lost some comfort, it does also appear to be much faster, especially on an asphalt surface.
      But that’s a problem easily fixed with a Redshift Shockstop suspension stem, something I planned on fitting anyway.
      Overall I’m extremely happy with the Tannus Armour, especially, as you said yourself, it’s so maintenance-free.

    I've spent hours fiddling around with this armour. I've had to install one a few times on a 17mm rim with a 2.25" schwalbe racing ralph (not recommended) and ofc I didn't bother cutting it the first time. I needed 2 extra hands to get it seated badly. It was a genuine nightmare but it finally allowed me to use a 2.25 tyre that wouldn't almost roll off or puncture every other day. Now I have a 24mm rim and the armour is flaccid. I also cut it to size and it's super easy to install now compared to the first time. I was scared of ripping the tyre, good thing the racing ralph is strong.

      I'd say it runs harder than going tubeless, obviously more weight than tubeless but so far have had no punctures and low maintenance. I am going to try and run the tubolito innertubes as they are really light.
      Regarding the thinner question, you are suppose to let the air out ob the tubes when you're not riding for along time so the foam keeps it shape.

    • @DanEscapes

      How did your tires hold up? These do add a lot of rolling resistance to the wheels and especially if you’re doing that many miles a day you’ll notice. If you find that you’re constantly having to fix punctures and your can deal with the rolling resistance then it’s be a great product. I haven’t had any punctures since installing them and managed to make my wheels lighter by changing the tires and inner tubes (just an added expense)

    I have considered getting these inserts for protection from glass and goathead stickers which we have in abundance around here. • @jdgoesham5381
      @jdgoesham5381 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's actually more since you need new smaller tubes. Full price with tubes delivered in like 175 USD from the company last I checked. Some good liners, some good(non garbage)tubes and some tire slime in each tube works quite well. Another thing to help not get so many flats is lower your tire pressure. I run my ebike tires at like 50-60% psi. I know others who go like 15% of max psi...Prob depends on the bike. I've also heard of people using certain types of foam pool noodles that have a cutout in the inner center that the tube can be placed into and put in the tire then pumped up. Though I imagine you'd need a smaller tube than the tire calls for like when you install these Tannus liners. But those couple ez things I mentioned will help a lot. It's all I do with all of my road bikes and I've had good luck.

    I ride gravel, skinnier tires, but 10mm more than standard and therefore have a slight rimbrake clearance issue where i need to deflate the tires abit to squeeze the tires past the brakes.
    How much wall squeezyness do you have with the inserts if the tubes are not inflated?
    And after time, have your inserts gone flat? I've been reading that the thick bit just becomes flat and you kinda lose the protection bit. Have you had similar experiences or are yours still in shape?

    • @Daniel-dj7fh
      @Daniel-dj7fh ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My options are at the moment to get a set of these for around 40bucks a piece and reuse my current tires.
      Or get a new set of tires (because the rear has two holes, a thorn and glass shard) which could cause issues, and kinda need a new tube once a month or something, which costs money :(
