- In this week's video, I talk about why I'm switching back to tubes from tubeless. Controversial, yes, clickbait, definitely not. Tubless has been great but I still got punctures in the rear tyre frequently with 27psi and a double-down casing. Looking for a solution, I found Tannus an insert that runs tubes! With a lightweight tubilito tube and an Exo casing tyre, the weight was respectable too! Check out the whole video for my thought on the new setup!

Best review I've seen echoing my findings . I've been running these for 4 years on my hardtail. Game changing feel. Lower pressures , no drama , more compliant ride. I've taken some rim shaking strikes with no outcomes. I carry one spare tube and some puncture patches. No more messing with liquids and gloopy mess . Love them .
The review is on point. Been using Tannus for over a year for both front and rear of my bike. The weight is a bit of concern before but for the benefits I have had experienced with it, is phenomenal.
1. Grip and damping is superb, even at lower pressures.
2. Rim protection is top-notch!
3. Run flat capability: I had a puncture on the sidewall due to a thorn. I had my hand pump but somehow it failed after years of use. My riding buddies didn't had any pumps as well. I was able to ride my bike back to our base camp with a flat rear tire 7kms away.
Quick Tip: During installation though, put some talcum powder on the tires and inner side of the Tannus Armor. Saves you time and the talcum powder acts as a lubricant.

@@trailtalkmtb6603 Nope I haven't tried Tubolito. I am using Maxxis Ultralight Tubes. They work fine. I have heard that some Tubolitos bulge if over-inflated. They are a bit expensive and requires a specific Tubolito patch kits in case they are punctured. So to save some cash and headache, I opted Maxxis Ultralights.
I'm in northern beaches too. Tore out a few sidewalls on brand new tyres with lighter casings. Went the full mile and got a dh casing in the rear. Bike felt so so sluggish. Switched to tannus today - in combination with an exo+ casing on the rear. Feels great! Faster, grippier.

Got them on my hybrid which I use to commute via gravel tracks and tarmac after 3 punctures during January. Been very pleased, no noticable performance or handling differences. Don't carry pump or spare tubes anymore as can ride home even if I did puncture.
Absolutely agree. I've been using for Tannus for 2+ years now and I think you've completely covered all the advantages and also agree with your comments about using it in the front too! Excellent review! I have had zero punctures or rim dings since running Tannus. I did slash a sidewall but this didn't result in damage to the rim or tube and allowed me to carry on the ride as if the tyre was fine! Amazing! I previously used tubeless but this is far better for all the reasons you said.

Thanks Phil, exactly what I’ve found. I switched over to Tannus 3 weeks ago and instantly noticed the difference from tubeless. The extra grip it gives in the corners has been great, you can really attack corners with confidence. I started with the back first but now run both, finding the extra dampening and grip to my liking. A definite upgrade and will be sticking with them.

I live in the Nevada desert and recently found these tannus inserts and omg my e-bike is now invincible.

I’ve been running Tannus Front and Rear now for app 15 months and liked it so much I also had to do a review on it. This product is 💯 without a doubt one of the best products I’ve used. I retained a similar weight to what I had with tubeless but the lower rolling resistance and increased traction my riding was in fact easier and faster.

I want to ask you that in some reviews they say when you put the bike in garage don’t use it for around 1 month. The tannus inserts got flat and lose their hardness of absorbing on road. They say don’t put the bike for a long time on the ground stable. Did you see anything like that ? Thanks.
@@federaldelii after one year of use. The sidewalls are 0.5 mm, the thickest center of the original 15 mm, now 2.5 mm. After the first month, you could complain

The standard “TUBED” version as in Phil’s review enables you to use absolutely any tyre you want, the beauty of this product is that you can use lighter single wall tyres without fear of punctures or sidewall slashes you would normally get without Tannus. You can use any, tubeless or non tubeless…

thank you so much, I paired the insert with the new Schwalbe Aerothan tubes... no punctures so far on trails where I even punctured Enduro casings with tubeless. And I can finally make use of all these light casing tires I have in my drawer
for the past 55 years I've been riding tubed (various road & mtb), using slime tubes for the last 20 years and been very happy with that - very few punctures, easily repaired / replaced. I bought a second hand e-mtb last November (Trek Powerfly 9.7) which came with tubeless - my first experience of tubeless. To say I was apprehensive is an understatement. Ran fine, but as always I run a high pressure, which apparently is not what tubeless is all about!! (or so I've been informed by the tubeless evangelists). I was getting the man & machine as one experience until last week when a knobble tore slightly from the casing - just enough to flumox the sealant. So, being an old guy I had to work hard to get the tyre off the rim to put in a tube to continue my ride. Wasn't impressed with the effort or mess but did get there in the end. With my cynicism confirmed I am now returning to tubes but as Tannus has turned up I'm thinking of giving this a go, along with slime tubes - if I get a puncture now it's chess for me !!!
I'm on an e-mtb forum and have mentioned I'm doing this - it's almost like I've claimed I'm a practising satanist!!. The amount of responses saying how tubeless is the ONLY solution and nothing could convince them to go back to tubes.... and for this I am extremely grateful for your review. It's good to hear positive feedback about them and helps me feel I am doing the right thing. I have got smaller tubes and will run at a lower pressure that I usually do.

@@trailtalkmtb6603what size tubolito tube are you using? The 1.8-2.5? Or do they have a smaller size? I've been riding with the insert for a while now. It's freaking amazing!! I live in western Colorado and it's extremely rocky and chunky here. Having the insert makes a phenomenal difference. It's so so nice.

As a commuter bike rider or a two wheeled recumbent. I'm having one of these critters installed in my rear tire. I don't car about the weight, what I hate is fixing a flat tire. Honestly, I am looking forward to using this insert.
Good review. I bought the Tannus tubeless insert 6 months ago, and installed it in the rear. Nothing negative to report about it, other than you need to muscle it in like a guerrilla. I am 175 lbs and run 24 psi out back, 22 psi up front.

Yeah this video basically change my mind about bothering to go tubeless. I can get Tannus in UK for £25. I'm going to try it in the rear tyre first. Thanks mate. I also copped a HUGE rim strike on my hardtail and there was no damage or puncture. Couldn't even see where it hit.

great system. the downside to tubeless is mess and changing tyres for the conditions is a faff . changing a tubed system is very quick.
not to mention all the crap built up on the inside of the tyre and bead after 6 months or so... stans sealant!!

Great video though, im still sticking to tubeless on MTB, literally never had a flat so im happy. But on my road bike tubeless is ending up being high maintenance. Since the casing of the tire is directly in contact with the ground (no knobs) the tires quickly accumulate damage from glass and screws etc. All these little cuts seal, but always slowly leak so tires are being constantly being pumped up.
The first tires I were using the Schwalbe Pro 1 I kept getting catastrophic fails constantly where the sealant would spray in the air / all over bike and not seal. Literally 1 tire lasted my 6km and it went in the bin. I swapped to Pirelli tubeless tires and they were very puncture proof, but the problems still existed, there would be lots of tread but the damage would quickly add up overtime making the tire loose pressure and become un-reliable, if I went on holiday the tire would become flat and then sealant would cake all over bead, which DOES NOT come off! So tread was left but tire had to go in the bin.
I just really want to get the full life out of a tire which I can do with MTB tires but yet to do it with 5 years on road tubeless.

Seeing my old comment here, here's an update:
I've spent hours fiddling around with this armour. I've had to install one a few times on a 17mm rim with a 2.25" schwalbe racing ralph (not recommended) and ofc I didn't bother cutting it the first time. I needed 2 extra hands to get it seated badly. It was a genuine nightmare but it finally allowed me to use a 2.25 tyre that wouldn't almost roll off or puncture every other day. Now I have a 24mm rim and the armour is flaccid. I also cut it to size and it's super easy to install now compared to the first time. I was scared of ripping the tyre, good thing the racing ralph is strong.

Great review! In your opinion, would it be better to pair this insert with a lightweight butyl tube like the Maxxis ultralight (109 grams - $7) or shell out for the tubolito (78 grams - $35)?
I'm a total beginner, and I've been slamming my Tannus rear tyre into every rock, crevice, and step for the past year of learning... I'm only just getting the hang of getting the weight off the back tyre when I go over things. I've not had a single flat in that time. This stuff to me is absolutely gold. Prior to Tannus I had 2 flats in quick succession (one pinch flat, the other a rock hit) and one rim dent. Also I've not had any damage to the rims since installing it. I can't believe it's such a cheap product too... given everything else in MTB is so expensive, this is really one of the gem's out there. Great review, love this channel. Thanks.
I still use tube's with a Kevlar/style protection tape in the tire..Haven't had a puncher in 2 since .

I was commuting to work on bike last year. About 80 miles/wk May-October. Been having a hard time deciding on tire options after a flat made me late once around September. Today, not quite spring yet, but super nice & was going to still be warm(ish) after work... blew out a tire on first bike ride to work. Don't care about weight nor price nearly as much as getting to destination on time. Countless hours watching videos, comparing everything. I think I am about to try these. They may even arrive before it gets warm enough to ride daily.
did you go with these? I too care more about getting to and from work without a flat and not about weight or rolling resistance since I'm on an e-bike. I looked around a lot for a good solution. I was trying to use regular liners, but those didn't protect the sides and also caused their own flats by cutting into the tube over time. I even did a lot of research on the best liner and think the reviews were bunk. Who in their right mind designed the end of the liner with right angle instead of tapered edges?
So I'm going to start shopping and hopefully can get the tube and tannus liner together.
@@laughinggas5281 I did. They were very tough to install. With no air in the tire still feels like 20psi. I got a flat on my way to work, kept riding to gas station, fixaflat got me to work. I ended up not reinstalling one after I got a bunch of flats, probably the rims fault.
I ride BMX. I use the same system. Tannus armour with tubolito tubes. My tires are 2.55 Merritt Phantoms and I run them at 100psi. Incredible fast and smooth rolling with the least amount of rolling resistance. I have found so much glass, sharp rocks, and thorns stuck to my tires and my tubes would have popped if it weren't for my tannus inserts. I have been using them since 2020 and still no flats.

When you ride a wheel with a flat tire most likely the tire will get damaged. It happened twice with Cush core and the green foam insert.cannot remember the brand. Like your videos.

Cool video, but have you ever tried Vittoria tires in the trial casing, I just got some this year and no punctures or side wall tares/ side wall squirming. They out perform exo casing and they are worth a try

I think another solution you could try is changing up the tire brand and experimenting. Personally I run Vitoria tires with cushcore and they hold up great. The casing is very good and surprisingly light.

I am still running stock setup on my siskiu d7. I am keen on tubeless because of my imagined messiness. As some have commented about the difficulty of installation, I like to hear how bad is it to smear a few drop of chain lub in between the layers, tyre, insert and tube
sounds like a great product, only disadvantage I can see is the need for bringing an extra tube if You only use it in the back.
I ride 2.6 both front and back, so if I swap to Tannus in the back I cant use the same spare tube if I need to
Tried these with modern plastic tubes - Schwable Aerothan. The foam reacted with the tube and tube went porous. Ok with super light rubber tubes. Easy to use but reduces grip a bit and rim dents can still happen.

I haven’t had any issues running a DH dual ply tire in the back and a trail casing up front. I rarely get any flats and I ride some rocky straight edge trails.
I'm definitely on the unlucky side of things. It also comes down to riding style. I can be pretty reckless with my line choices haha
Hmm. I was sceptical about these but they sound like a winner. No sealant sounds good. And the ability to use cheaper casing tyres but maintain sidewall support is another.
I run an ARD with DD Maxxis and Stan's in the back. Sick of the sealant but haven't punctured yet.
And up front exo+ with tube (split it bad first ride). I too like a light front and didn't like the ARD up front. Seemed to make the front too springy like too many tokens on smaller bumps. That's probably amplified by the extra unsprung weight. Just couldn't get comfortable with it.

A very in-depth and honest review. I’ve been running cushcore for about a year now. At first F/R and now only R - it’s a DT Fr560 with Assegai Exo+ and that seems to be a good combo - no dramas as of yet.
Would you say tannus is more for the heavy-hitters and rim protections, or more for puncture protection? Considering giving it a go, although why fix a system that works very well.
Your ride qualities will improve NOTICEABLY with Tannus because of the vibration dampening the product creates plus the additional sidewall support will allow more traction, lower pressures with increased tyre stability and less rolling resistance as the 15mm thick top section creates less tyre compression at a rolling pace. Think of it as progressive travel in your tyres.
Agree with flowmentun. Plus you get more complete protection than cushcore and with the tubilito the weight is better too.
But then again if it ain't broke...

I have them on my emtb. Just a couple of notes, on installation, you need to pump to a higher pressure to make the bead sit (the insert squashes as you pump up, keep going until you get that reassuring pop). I used a too small road tube on my first attempt (2.6 inch tyres), this was a bad idea and split when riding. At least I can confirm it is possible to ride with a flat inner tube, but only slowly and I not for long (I was up to Turbo on my assistance). Removing the Tannus on route is a bit harder than just removing the tyre, it is tricky to unbead as the tyre / insert combo is much stiffer. A bit of "lube" from my water bottle helped.
For ebike, which are heavier, and in my case ebike rider (who may be heavier........) they are great at reducing pinch flats or tubeless burp's.
On my front wheel, I initially did feel the added inertia from the additional weight, it is a sensation affecting steering slightly, and I very quickly adapted .
Ps I read the instructions, drop the pressure periodically to allow the inserts to decompress.

I have to tell you. Few weeks ago I probably point my rear wheel at sharp edge of rock which pierced my Schwalbe Nobby Nic Super Ground then goes through Tannus Armour (for tube version) and then it made a small hole in my tube (Maxxis 29" Ultralight). So... If you plan go to ride more rough terrain I think the good idea is to use thicker tires. Actually I aim into Schwalbe Magic Mary 29x2.40 Supper Gravity Addix Soft so it will probably prevent future sharp edge rocks penetrations. So in my case the Tannus insert didn't blocked puncture 100% but I think the tire was the main problem.
Besides getting worried about a flat, it feels smooth.
back in my school days we used old fire hydrand hose, tough as nails. rode my bike for around 10km every day for 5 years and never had a single
puncture, where i hade a puncture at least once 1-2 months before that. it probably wont give any grip benefits thou and the weight was noticeable

In my area the land is riddled with sharp thorns or in this case we refer to as bullheads. These thorns can easily rendered a tube useless even if the tube is inundated with slime or whatever out there that's being advertised.
Seems like a cool product, I just am worried about having extra weight in my rear. I have a full suspension alloy bike, coming from a plus size hardtail, and I don’t like how heavy the rear end is, I can’t really justify making it any heavier.
It really depends on the trails you ride and what you currently have. For Trail and XC I think it might be a little much.
Pro tip is add a tiny bit of sealant into any tube you use. The most annoying thing with tubes is the tiniest pin prick deems a tube completely useless. With a little sealant you then don't have to worry about thorns.
How is the shock absorption? Is it worth it just to buy it for that reason?

Can't fit mine on my 26 inch 2.1 width MTB tyres even without the inner tube as it is too tight on the rims and the edges spills over the side of the tyres even when i trimmed out down as per instructions.. Wish you could do a tutorial as I'm struggling and not sure what to do.
Tioga Max Protect tubes have been around for quite a few years, they are like this but are made one piece I have used them but they feel a bit weird to me. I use Schwalbe tubes with slime added these days.
Interesting, looks like a similar concept as you said. They appear to be a fair bit heavier though. It would be interesting to see if the foam is similar.
@@trailtalkmtb6603 I would say that Tannus would be much lighter...for DH weight isn't really a concern though, like you say fit it to the back for insurance.

Thanks mate! Glad I can help. Unfortunately it does not have a lockout. I found it pedaled pretty well in the saddle though. Setup is pretty crucial with the sight too. Check out MTB Telly's videos on the bike.

really hard to padle with this insert and I think the bike is slower than without the insert… I only use it for DH since it’s quite hard to padle I don’t use it for enduro also punctured one in 3 weeks so I don’t know if it’s the best choice…
What size tube for 29er with tannus armour?

You've convinced me Phil. I have one for the rear on the way. So you still run tubeless on the front and haven't managed to fully get away from sealant? Or you run a std tube on the front. Any handling issues having the insert only in the rear?
Zero handling issues with just doing the rear tire. We’ve seen a combination of both, running tubeless in the rear tubed Armour in the front or just tubeless armour in the rear. Hope this helps

Just watched "* POOL NOODLE TIRE INSERT HACK ** - Never Get A Flat Tire Again On Any Bike!" by Jake. His video was my first introduction to this system but wanted to know more about the Tannus setup and AUD $$$. So great to see a fellow Ozzie review this product.
So my next question is: can all tubeless rims run a tube ???
Do I need for the tannus Armour TUBELESS extra tires?
It does not work with usual ones right?
What about the valve breaking against the rubber, keeps on happening to me.
I would like to see a film where you show three things:
1. Installing the insert in real time to a tire
2. Adding a tube to the tire on trail that has an insert
3. Riding 1km with a flat tier with just the insert
Do they make these for small electric scooter tires? I have a 10" x 3" tire. Can these be cut to fit a small tire?
Can you get them for a 20 inch by 4 inch, please?
I want to ask you that in some reviews they say when you put the bike in garage don’t use it for around 1 month. The tannus inserts got flat and lose their hardness of absorbing on road. They say don’t put the bike for a long time on the ground stable. Did you see anything like that ? Thanks.

what is your front setup? you said Tannus is not for you in front, but since you seemed to not like to mess with sealant i wonder if you are running tubeless or with a tube/tubelito?
So...I should run Assegai with Tanus?
