Micro Four Thirds: Resolution Even the PROS Want!

  • I wanted to test the Hi Res Shot mode on my Olympus E-M1 Mark ii and while I may have had a little incident with camera settings I think the 50 megapixel files came out great!
    Using this Hi Res Shot mode my Olympus camera produces RAW files with a higher resolution than a Canon R5 and a Nikon Z7, a little bit of food for thought.

    It will always be Olympus, Chris. OM Systems is just a group of investors. Money people who know zero about art. The Olympus spirit is what is about art. And Olympus lives on in our hearts.

    • @TigerPaw193

      I agree that it does live on in our hearts, but does it live on in the hearts of the current generation of engineers and designers? Does it live on in the hearts of the current generation of management and executives? I honestly don't know.
      If they update the OM5 menu system, that will help me believe it. If they bring out an OM10 with phase detect and a restoration of certain features that were deleted after the E-M 10 mk ii, that will help me believe it. If they bring out a Pen F mk ii with phase detect and some other updates, that will help me believe it.
      For now, the Olympus spirit of art lives on in our hearts, but I'm not feeling it from the company.

      Sorry but that’s complete bollox. OM Systems is the ex-Olympus camera business unit. Same people, albeit probably slimmed down. Olympus Corp remains, is, and always was about far more than cameras. The divestment of the camera division was fallout from major corporate corruption. We should be thankful that JIP (the actual “group of investors”) saved the Olympus camera business from oblivion as OMDS, because Olympus itself totally screwed it up.

  • @tas_roberts
    @tas_roberts 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    As Olympus said themselves, that high resolution mode resolves around 50MP of resolution, that's why that's the output, however, RAW files are 80MP, because E-M1 Mark II is moving it's sensor in 8 positions, but 4 are half pixel movements, so final resolution is 4*20=80MP.
    And one more thing - you are getting not only raw resolution using high res mode, but also full colour resolution. You can see the difference in dpreview E-M5 Mark II review, when is compared to D810 - resolution is similar, but when fine patterns are visible, then Olympus was better, because there was no colour shift.

      The HHHR does not record 50mp of detail 30mp is closer to reality , what it does do is reduce noise in scenes where it is usable , no movement etc The tripod mode is capable of great results subject allowing { no movement etc }. The wind blowing in the opening scenes of the video for example would impact pixel shift significantly , and given the video is only 1080p and further screwed by YT compression there is no way to demonstrate the result based on this. I do have an OM-1 and Z7II for that matter the HHHR mode is not as good though the tripod mode can give very good results

    Tripod mode gives 80mp Raw image and 50mp jpeg. The raw file needs to be downsized to 50mp or it will look soft. You need to use the free 'Olympus Workspace' software to get the best out of the high res raw file. Other software programs like Lightroom, DXO etc. are garbage in comparison. You need to sharpen the raw files very aggressively. High res mode is good but in some respects is not as sharp as an equivalent megapixel FF sensor.

    8:00 you can trick the camera into believing it's on a tripod if you screw in a quick release plate. At least mine lets me select high res shot that way, but ideally you want to have it on a tripod anyway, because the total time to capture is a bit slow in that mode

    As usual I enjoyed this Chris. I have three cameras with High-Res mode. On the Pen-f I used it exactly once and couldn't be bothered to use it again as I use it for street photography. Both the OM-5 and the OM-1 have the handheld High-Res mode and do a great job. Still, I do not use it that often. One of the reasons is that it eats up disk space. Like someone else in the comments said it does give better colour definition though. So, in some cases it has been very useful to me. On the other hand I still shoot with the 8Mp E-300 so, resolution is not that important to me.

      As a serious photographer I can tell you that the resolution isn’t to blame, not even a little bit. 1080p is in fact a series of 2MP images shown to you, 4K is a WHOPPING 8MP. What actually makes a difference is the codec used when recording video, and more specifically the bit rate. Unfortunately, my Sony A7R has a fairly low bit rate for video.
