    Speaking of E.T. lost media, there's a Playstation 2 game that never got released called "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial: Return to the Green Planet". You can find the game's rating on the ESRB's website, indicating that it was indeed finished, and the composer uploaded the soundtrack onto TH-cam.

    I've heardf stories about how deeply upset Drew Barrymore was when she thought E.T was actually dying. But to see actual behind the scenes footage with her and Spielberg and seeing her actually upset hit me right in the feels.. ;_;

    Hearing Spielberg talk about how they played the production in a way that used real emotion from their actors, and cutting the final ending to just let the impact of that heartwarming scene sit...This is what separates Art from Agenda

    • @ScooterinAB
      @ScooterinAB 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I dunno. I understand why that ending scene takes away from that moment, but it doesn't make it a bad ending scene nor making it about an "Agenda." It's like the Tosche Station scene from A New Hope. It explains a hell of a lot of what's going on, but it gets in the way of the pacing. This ending doesn't work not because of some agenda or something, but because it's emotional whiplash with what we get in the final film. It's a good scene, ties things up well, and brings the story back to Elliot learning to be a better kid, but it's too different from that final scene (plus makes little sense if he's not autistic).

    • @Purplesubmariner
      @Purplesubmariner 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@ScooterinAB no, ET isn't about agenda, it's art. I'm comparing the movie's production to the modern mentality of studio filmmaking where everything is thrown together and boxes and checked and it's not about story or emotional connection, it's about proving a point

      Wanting a certain audience/viewer response is an agenda. Everyone generally has an agenda. But, I’d agree larger political/social agendas really seem out of hand at the moment to me.
      And when it comes to historical or older films you’re much more often getting ones that stood above the rest. Having watched movies from every decade for decades that’s the conclusion I’ve come to. We just don’t have to be inundated by crap of the past like we experience in our current place in time.

      @Purplesubmariner Oh please. What about the anti-Christian agenda using The Creation of Adam visual to sell an anti-Christian movie theme? What about the changes they made regarding gun control propaganda? No agenda. HA! Yeah, I really admire his restraint and artistic focus. lol

    I guess, the movie works the best it was finally cut. ET was one of my late mom's fave films. As a teacher she watched the film on original release with her class in theater. 2 decades later she watched the Anniversary Edition with me in theater. She liked the bonding parts, but agreed that the first cut worked the best.

      @ScooterinAB 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah. As much as I understand what Spielberg was trying to do (the effects were limited by what was possible then), the CG shots just don't work. The best effects are the ones you don't notice, especially when you have something like an alien. It's a problem if I can look out of the corner of my eye and immediately spot that this is CG, and that takes me out of the movie.

      A cgi overacting ET gives a cringe. They should keep the puppet as much as they can and just replicate another puppet like effect or create another puppet and put it there with masking. Phisical effects are always better.

    I guess I'm going to have to be the one to talk about the last 12 minutes of this video I actually know the scene and reasons why ET is hovering over Elliot's mother
    In the novelization of ET there is a lot of extra information you get from ET because you actually hear his thought process throughout the novel in the scene in question though the reason behind him actually hovering over Elliot's mother. is that he's in love and infatuated with her and he's creepily pining over her while she sleeps what makes the scene even more creepier is the book elaborates on how old ET actually is and he is well over the age to be considered an old man.
    The novel novelization is a very interestingly weird and worth the read they're also some people on TH-cam who have read the novel I recommend finding them the novel is a bit of a long read

    That originally intended last airual crane shot pulling back meant to finish the film before fade out is like cutting out the final shot from Citizen Kane and leaving the Rosebud reveal on the cutting room floor. That pull out POV to reveal E.T. left Elliot a homemade satellite transmitter communication unit on the roof suggesting that Elliot and E.T. will be able to continue their connection and establish the furthest long distance relationship in the cosmos. I mean, I get fade to black at the absolute exact Pinnacle and emotional peak that is the heart of the movie a la Rocky and The Karate Kid. It leaves the audience on an all-time gargantuan adrenaline high. But, the deleted original ending actually leaves me with an even bigger, more profound and deeper satisfying high that's fulfilling to the soul. I always thought Elliot was saying goodbye forever aa a kid watching it and this would be a relationship that would define Elliot as having experienced sonething phenomenal, but would also haunt him his entire life the way losing your best friend in childhood always will have a bitter-sweet lasting effect, E.T. is kinda a hard act to beat. But now, forty years later, I can recontextualize their chances of reuniting by E.T. leaving an actual DIY inner-stellar CB hand radio. Breaker, breaker good buddy, ten-four. Space Cowboy over.

    ET was a near perfect movie for me. Spielberg hated the fact it looked like a puppet and that it could only move so much. Just like George Lucas & Yoda. But audiences never saw a puppet. We saw ET & we saw Yoda. I always respected Spielberg for releasing his vision and the original.
    I always wanted a sequel because ET was like a friend. I went through the same emotions as Elliott. I wanted to see more ET. But I also wanted more Terminator movies too. An ending is bittersweet, but sometimes it's better than the alternative.

    • @ToyotaGuy1971
      @ToyotaGuy1971 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @DamonCzanik That whole nonsense was just trying to say "we didn't change it for greed or agendas or to make people think they missed out on something so they'd buy the same movie again; we made it the way we should've made it before". Yeah, right! Dry that one out and you can fertilize the state of Texas. lol

  • @ScooterinAB
    @ScooterinAB 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Elliot having ASD changes how I am going to see the movie. I now want to watch it with that in mind.
    I understand why the ending D&D scene is removed, but in light of Elliot having ASD, I really like it. It makes the movie about Elliot again and for the message to be able how ET helped him learn how to be a friend and be less "weird." The same is true for many of the other scenes; they only work if he's autistic and really add to that, but I understand that the movie stalls too much with some of these scenes.
    Regarding the guns, and maybe this is because I'm a traumatized 80s kid, butt I'm a fan of Don Bluth's approach. You can show these government agents trying to shoot children as long as the movie has a happy ending. That adds more weight and motivation to the flying thing; it's not that they're flying because the agents are in the way. They're flying because they're about to get shot, and that to me makes a lot more sense. Kids are going to be able to understand at least part of that, but yeah, it's dark as hell.

    • @ScooterinAB
      @ScooterinAB 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, it's him being an isolated weirdo, not taking social cues, drawing on the wall, and everything else in the film that shows him having ASD. Lining up his action figures is one example taken with a number of other examples.

    • @opinian1068
      @opinian1068 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ScooterinAB he was behaving that way because he was unaware he was empathically connecting with E.T. ...not because he was supposed to be autistic in the final cut. They un-sync during the medical scenes towards the end.

    • @ScooterinAB
      @ScooterinAB 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@opinian1068 So ignoring that he's a misfit in the first parts of the movie, the point is that he learned how to better relate to people over the duration of the film (just as those with ASD can more consciously learn how to manage their behaviour). So them "unsyncing" at the end is just that. However, I don't think this is the case. I'd have to rewatch it, but his behaviour during the medical scenes still resonates as autistic.
      What we'd need is a deep dive into this topic,. not a one-liner in a TH-cam video that isn't meant to be a deep dive. What this section of the video did was reveal that this was the plan. It isn't meant to tie in every part of the movie as proof.

    • @opinian1068
      @opinian1068 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@ScooterinAB Yeah totally I see your point. He's not really a misfit he's just trying to fit in with older boys - as most young boys do - plus the entire family is in the aftermath a the patents separating. The dad is almost an invisible character in it. Spielberg's angle story-wise was a bit autobiographical in response to his own parents divorce. E.T. arrives when the family is super vulnerable. I think Elliot is totally normal. He's as curious and imaginative as any kid.
