Is it feasible to get around maria island without bikes? Also, you mentioned that maria island wouldn't be in your top 5 things to do in Tasmania, is there any other places you would recommend for seeing wombats as that is my main reason for wanting to visit maria island.

You can walk around Maria Island but if you wanted to go to all the main spots it would be a massive hike. You can also hire bikes over there.
If wombats are your main attraction then it is definitely worth it! The only other place we found so many wombats was at cradle mountain - Ronny creek. Both places the best time to see the wombats was in the afternoon from about 3pm.
