It was always possible to get residency, a lot of people just didnt bother as they said it (Brexit) would never happen. Its only the same as USA Canada etc, you cant just rock up and do what you like. They are protecting their borders. Brits also helped the black economy working in bars etc... but just listen to Brits complain about non Brits doing that in the UK. Tell us about Brexit in 20 years time, lets see how it has worked out then.
So many Brits lived in Spain for over 183 days and never registered to pay tax. Typically these were the same people complaining when the 90 day rule came in, and they eith had yo leave, or register as a resident.
Why do so many people get so fired up with the 90 day rule? Most of the moaners were breaking the law by staying in Spain for over 6 months without contributing to Spanish taxes. The only difference now is you can still legally stay in Spain for 6 months a year but with a 90 day break in the middle
It wasn’t enforced before but now it is. That’s the difference. People had lived here’s for decades and went back to the UK because for whatever reasons they did not want to get their residency or become tax residents. Many, many people and families with kids returned to the UK completely broke because after Brexit they could no longer work “cash in hand”. It was astonishing the numbers that went back. There actually were charities set up in Spain specifically to help UK nationals get back to the UK. I’ll never understand it.
@@ScottishCoupleInSpain it was illegal to work cash in hand, not pay taxes if you live in a country for over six months a year. Here in France many people ran businesses for years with vehicles still registered in the UK, didn’t pay tax in France and then blamed Brexit for getting into trouble when found out. FOM did not give you the right to be resident in one country and pay your tax in another.

It was the UK government that negotiated that rule too. However, I want to point out nobody said they voted to leave so it’s a bit odd we keep getting comments saying things like “you got what you voted for”. People who spend time in Europe didn’t vote for it, so your comment is irrelevant. Yes, it is what it is, but it’s certainly not welcomed by a lot of people. The UK enforced it, not the the EU. France have recently made changes to allow holiday home owners to stay 180 days and Spain are all set to follow. Despite the UK government refusing to discuss it.
@shCoupleInSpain France blocked the plan to let UK home owners stay longer than 90/180, they said it was 'unconstitutional'. The UK government could have stayed in the single market, indeed there is video of arch Brexiteer Daniel Hannan saying 'nobody is talking about threatening our place in the single market'. Leaving the single market meant the loss of freedom of movement which in turn meant we were bound by the 90/180 rule like all other third countries. Plenty of Brits who were Spanish residents voted to Leave the EU, same in France and Portugal and Italy. When I pointed out to those who would listen that we will lose freedom of movement after Brexit I was told it was all project fear and nothing will change because the EU needs us more than we need them blah blah blah.
