Thank you SO much!! For the past three years my back yard has been a horror movie - "The Grass That Refused to Be Mowed". Not knowing what I was dealing with, I would try to rake up the grass as I was mowing - a futile effort at best, and probably helped spread it at worst. Your solution does not look fun, but it is a clear plan and appears to be effective. You very may well have saved my sanity!

Great video! Reminded me of my own Bentgrass beat down from earlier in the Fall. My front yard was completely overRUN with the stuff and the old grass was trash (K31 and clumping fescue). I went the full renovation route. 2 apps of tenacity then Glyphosate the rest. I went with a KBG / PRG mix, I was really happy with the end result. I also got many many weird looks and comments from the neighbors and their tune changed quickly when they saw the results, LOL.I look forward to seeing your lawn leveling vid in the Spring. JB, this was the video I’ve been waiting for!
I feel your pain brother as I did the same to my front lawn late summer.
I didn’t have as much bentgrass as you but mine was a ton of 6” to 24” spots spread across a little bit larger area.
Did exactly the sane steps as you (great minds right?) except I did add a dusting of topsoil to each spot before and after seeding.
Doing that and covering with peat moss for so many little spot was SO time consuming. Grass came in well and by now it all looks consistent.
I didn’t have time to do a few spots in the backyard so will need to hit them next year.
My concern now is if I got it all in the front and will it come back next spring.
Unfortunately, all my neighbors have it in their lawn and they care not to control it.
Let me know if you have any return next year and I’ll do the same.
Thanks for this video and Happy Thanksgiving to you and GarageGal!
    Dave

Hey DAVE!!! Great minds do think alike! I have quite a few friends that were eagerly waiting for this video!
The lawn has been looking great and I’m not seeing that bentgrass anywhere where I killed it off. It was a lot of work but if any does return it will be small/quick kill offs at this point. Nothing like this last job. I could spot spray it with a hand can at this point. I will keep you posted if any comes back next spring but I am confident I got it. I’m also wondering when I level the lawn in the spring will any that does pop up get buried? I’m excited to level this thing! It’ll be a fun project! Stay Awesome my friend! 👍

Should I dig up and still put tenacity down because this was dug up once before, and it came back. It is very hard to get all those stallions out. That’s why I’m thinking wants to once it is dug out. Did the electronic dethatcher work well for you on bent grass @whitieinvermont? I just tried it after watching this video and I'm thinking I should have used a manual rake. The dethatcher seems to have pulled up a lot of the bent grass but left plenty of roots and some stems and runners. I'll have to rake as well, I think.

    • @whitieinvermont
      @whitieinvermont ปีที่แล้ว

@gregjamieson7918 it works great. No need to worry about the grass. It will stand it up and also help to get the dead grass off the new and growing grass. Plus it actually allows the air to get to the new growing grass. You may want to consider using the rake to remove the dead grass or a mower that can either mulch it or into a bagger. If this is the first time for you, I think that you'll be surprised on how well it looks weeks after.

Thanks for the informative video. I have bent grass in my lawn on a much smaller scale, just some patches here and there. I plan to spray the tenacity surfactant spray today and had a couple of questions.
    1. Any issues with doing this in the spring versus fall? I am located in the Midwest so temps are just starting to get warm.
    2. Is it an issue to fertilize with first treatment after about a week or so of the tenacity application?
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks for watching. You can fertilize at any point but the tenacity will kill any bent

Quick tip use the Scott’s Triple Action starter fertilizer early in the spring it has mesotrione (sp?) in it which is tenacity but in granular form. It will light up the bentgrass and then you can spray with liquid tenacity to get rid of it

    Show me your lawn today.
I killed my entire front lawn a few years ago had the turf taken away, added soil and replanted tall fescue.
Guess what! The crap is back I hate my lawn looks awful and I’m convinced it’s impossible to get rid of.
If I ever do it again I’ll take the top 2 feet of soil away along with the lawn. I’m convinced that the only way.
Did I say I hate it?
I cut my grass over 3 inches I actually think that does more to envy it than stop it.

Hey Steve I feel your pain with this stuff. A few little spots did come back from huge patches I ripped out but that was expected because they were such large areas. All the little areas are holding up just fine. I’ll give this a shot again on those small patches this fall. At least it won’t be such a big job as last year. Thanks for watching

If you're going to attempt the do-it-yourself route wouldn't it be less burdensome to hire a landscape service to come in with a power rake machine to at least remove all of the dead debris? I can see the hand raking would be the most difficult part of the entire renovation process.

    • @GarageGear

The dead bent grass just went in plastic bags? Does that just go to your dump? You don't have yard waste options there?

Hey Not a Fan! As of now it did not come back. We’re looking good so far. I’ll know more when the temps go up in the summer. Bent grass likes to go crazy in high temps at least where I live. Did you use tenacity on yours? Bent grass can be pretty resilient.

@@Takeupyourcross. bent grass is very resilient turf! And can in some cases require multiple applications of tenacity to get rid of it. Bentgrass is great but you need to mow it correctly not tall like most homeowners do. Just mow 1/2 inch or lower and you will have a the best lawn with just bentgrass.

No need to dug out. 3 apps, 2 weeks apart, 95% gone. Another cycle a season later would make it completely gone. In a KBG stand, it will all fill. Slowlymdown. For the extent of your infestation, gly and start over a full reno would have been so much more simple, effective and you could have upgraded your lawn type to a more premium type.

You're way too early on your de thatching. You should wait months until the bentgrass is completely burned down. By doing it.ypur.way, surely there is alive bentgrass still left in the lawn. Plus you.made the job a lot harder than it should have been. Most of the dieing bentgrass will just decompose and there would be no need for such a heavy clean up
