The original contractor did shoddy low quality work and she asked him to fix it before she completed payment, he demanded payment while she was at work and she wanted to see that he had actually fixed it before she completed payment. He didn't want to wait so he immediately did this instead. That, or he was sure she'd see he didn't actually fix anything and knew she would refuse to pay him in the end so jumped the gun.
He did a horrible job though. Uneven tiles, and huge gaps in between the grout. Thats why you only pay half up front. If you want the rest of the money, you should do your job correctly.
Search for the full story before you judge. The contractor refuse to show the receipt of the material had been ordered (which she already paid for), and she asked the job to be inspected before final payment. What he destroyed is UNFINISHED job. This contractor is a crook that why he ran when asked questions by the reporter.

I started a landscaping business right out of high school. Long story short a single mom gave me 2 bounced checks and wouldn't answer the door or my phone calls. I came by in the middle of the night and emptied a trailer full of grass into her yard. Gave her a refund of her grass.

@@KattKingston I had tile work done on a kitchen remodel. The first round had chipped edges on the tile cuts, wavy lines/grout widths of all sizes, and bowed walls. The second round Ruined my 12' by 10' carpet in my living room - and I was cleaning out cement from my cabinets for YEARS. (demo that went BAD). The contractor was a nightmare. On the other hand, I know the tile contractor that did the work in the video. I would not hesitate to recommend him!! Honest, wonderful work, and truthful. You cannot ask for more.

The other contractors were from Colorado. That means her statement wasn't false. You gotta branch out a bit to find enough contractors willing to pitch in the labor and funds required to build a $10k shower in someone's house for free. I'm guessing they also sought to use it as an opportunity to highlight their work and good nature on national TV as advertisement for their business.

If that was truly the case, he could have placed a lien for non-payment. You guys should really learn the difference between criminal and civil matters. If you have an issue with not getting paid, take the client to civil court instead of trespassing on their property and committing criminal destruction
That person recording isn't the homeowner. It's a neighbor. It's very normal to pay half upfront and the other half upon completion and approval of the work. It would've had to be torn out anyway, as the contractor didn't get permits, so inspectors wouldn't have approved it.

The man broke into the house when the owner wasn’t home, the bathroom was paid for the home owner just wanted to see the work before giving the full amount. The contractor then destroyed said bathroom under his own accord, so what’s there to feel bad about? My husband just dropped his electrician business after people started not paying after his work. Lawyers didn't pay him, $26k worth of work on new homes. It was just too discouraging how dirty people were. My husbands work was & still is tip top.

Actually, the lady wanted the work to be done by locals, and locals did the work. They saw the pictures of the work the scumbag did before he destroyed it, and they felt bad for her. In fact, when they were doing demo, nothing had been done right and the shower would have quickly failed leaving serious water damage to other areas of the house.

If you saw his work, you would've wished you payed someone who had no experience in renovating bathrooms, at least they'd attempt to make their work look great, and at least be reasonably subpar. I mean, if he was an artist instead and was asked to paint a painting, he'd call his work Picasso while others would be comparing it to a child who tried to draw the Mona Lisa. I mean, some issues make the contractors look stupid for being so oblivious (the tile job looked like an ocean and that a drunk did the work, and some issues that were important wishes, were left like it didn't matter.
I agree. I've been a contractor for over 20 years. This is a weekly thing for us. We've talked about doing what he did but just keep giving the customers free stuff and don't get paid.
He was the scammer. He did such a bad job and the pictures make that absolutely clear (not sure why they didn't include them in this video - they really should have but you can find them if you google this story). She already paid him $3,000 and had noticed various problems with the work (the tiles were unevenly placed and crooked, there was excess grout, some tiles were already cracked, and the edges and corners of tiles were sharp and pointy) - the guy continued to work, but didn't address any of those issues, didn't actually finish the job which included installing the shower and then demanded payment in full saying he'd done everything she asked for but wouldn't allow her to actually check before he got paid. When she said she was on her way to inspect the work he'd done before paying him, he beat her to it and smashed everything with a sledgehammer to try and destroy the evidence that he hadn't actually done the job he had been hired to do.

Stories like these enable horrible customers like her to think they can not pay for work done. There's always two sides to every story. $3000 is only maybe half or a third of what she was supposed to pay. As a contractor myself, I've never had an issue like this, yet would consider doing the same. I always tell people to check references and give daily updates of my work to address any issues. When I'm done, I expect to get paid in full.

I’m honestly on the fence with this one. On one hand he should’ve gotten paid the full amount and he can take down what he has built up. You don't get to break into people's homes and destroy their property just because you weren't paid. If you're smart, you'll just place a lien on the property since it would be a CIVIL matter. I believe this sends the wrong message to potential home owners- unfortunately for the contractor he may just never get the rest of his money back. He lost time, money and probably still had to end up paying his employees so a loss all over for him. Meanwhile she got away with a free bathroom. The way the contractor handled the situation is the reason she got a free bathroom…he should have taken her to court…I’m not saying he wasn’t justified in being upset, but he has to see the bigger picture, like his reputation and how he will be seen. @@ms_cartographer That's considered criminal destruction and vandalism. Once the tiles were installed, they became a part of her house even if the material wasn't yet paid for. Her house, her rules. If big businesses can issue face covering requirements and order people who don't comply to leave even if they've made an online order, then she can ask a contractor to leave even if he's rendered services. If he takes issue with that, then he can place a lien for non-payment in civil court, much like a customer upset with a store not giving him what he paid for. Why do you people respect big businesses more than you do private homes?

That was her roommate who doesn't own that house that could only beg them to stop. He knew the female owner of the home was at work and he knew that she wanted to see all the corrections and repairs that he claimed he made to the shower. They texted back and forth and he wanted payment before she could get home from work to see the corrections/repairs he said he did. Because he had major issues he did that needed to be fixed/repaired to that shower remodel job he did. She wanted to see the finished job before she paid the final payment. So he tricks the roommate into letting him and a woman into the home by saying he was there just to pickup the rest of his tools. He's carrying a sledgehammer and a crowbar. The crappy shower remodel job he did was broken, cracked tiles, badly misaligned tiles, tiles covered in grout, messy grout lines, tiles missing so much grout that she would have had severe leaks in that shower. The shower seat also had so many misaligned tiles missing so much grout missing that you could see inside to the hollow area of the seat. This is why she was contacted by contractors all around the world that wanted to fix her bathroom. This is why they wanted to do it for free because they felt this contractor made all contractors look bad with the crappy work he did and the fact he destroyed her bathroom and a connecting wall trying to force payment without her even being home to inspect the finished job. He also didn't get a permit when he remodeled her bathroom which was later discovered.

Unfortunately a lot of contractors experience clients giving them the run around when it comes to paying I'm sure he was at his breaking point when she started doing the same to him This is not a feel good story

It's her property, her rules. When you're asked to leave a home, you leave irrespective of what services you have rendered. Take them to civil court for non-payment if necessary, but if you stay and vandalize their home, that's trespassing and criminal destruction.

The contractor refuse to show the receipt of the material had been ordered (which she already paid for), and she asked the job to be inspected before final payment. The second round Ruined my 12' by 10' carpet in my living room - and I was cleaning out cement from my cabinets for YEARS. (demo that went BAD). The contractor was a nightmare. On the other hand, I know the tile contractor that did the work in the video. I would not hesitate to recommend him!! Honest, wonderful work, and truthful. You cannot ask for more.

That person recording isn't the homeowner. It's a neighbor. It's very normal to pay half upfront and the other half upon completion and approval of the work. It would've had to be torn out anyway, as the contractor didn't get permits, so inspectors wouldn't have approved it.

I agree. I've been a contractor for over 20 years. This is a weekly thing for us. We've talked about doing what he did but just keep giving the customers free stuff and don't get paid.

He was the scammer. He did such a bad job and the pictures make that absolutely clear (not sure why they didn't include them in this video - they really should have but you can find them if you google this story). She already paid him $3,000 and had noticed various problems with the work (the tiles were unevenly placed and crooked, there was excess grout, some tiles were already cracked, and the edges and corners of tiles were sharp and pointy) - the guy continued to work, but didn't address any of those issues, didn't actually finish the job which included installing the shower and then demanded payment in full saying he'd done everything she asked for but wouldn't allow her to actually check before he got paid. When she said she was on her way to inspect the work he'd done before paying him, he beat her to it and smashed everything with a sledgehammer to try and destroy the evidence that he hadn't actually done the job he had been hired to do.

There's always two sides to every story. $3000 is only maybe half or a third of what she was supposed to pay. As a contractor myself, I've never had an issue like this, yet would consider doing the same. I always tell people to check references and give daily updates of my work to address any issues.
When I'm done, I expect to get paid in full.

I’m honestly on the fence with this one. On one hand he should’ve gotten paid the full amount and he can take down what he has built up. On the other hand it is a moral obligation that the customer doesn’t have to pay for something that isn’t done right. If A customer gets their order wrong, The restaurant should give their money back and they often do. Besides she already gave over $3000 for a crappy job.

@@ms_cartographer That's considered criminal destruction and vandalism. Once the tiles were installed, they became a part of her house even if the material wasn't yet paid for. Her house, her rules. If big businesses can issue face covering requirements and order people who don't comply to leave even if they've made an online order, then she can ask a contractor to leave even if he's rendered services. If he takes issue with that, then he can place a lien for non-payment in civil court, much like a customer upset with a store not giving him what he paid for.

That was her roommate who doesn't own that house that could only beg them to stop. He knew the female owner of the home was at work and he knew that she wanted to see all the corrections and repairs that he claimed he made to the shower. They texted back and forth and he wanted payment before she could get home from work to see the corrections/repairs he said he did. Because he had major issues he did that needed to be fixed/repaired to that shower remodel job he did. She wanted to see the finished job before she paid the final payment. So he tricks the roommate into letting him and a woman into the home by saying he was there just to pickup the rest of his tools. He's carrying a sledgehammer and a crowbar. The crappy shower remodel job he did was broken, cracked tiles, badly misaligned tiles, tiles covered in grout, messy grout lines, tiles missing so much grout that she would have had severe leaks in that shower. The shower seat also had so many misaligned tiles missing so much grout missing that you could see inside to the hollow area of the seat. This is why she was contacted by contractors all around the world that wanted to fix her bathroom. This is why they wanted to do it for free because they felt this contractor made all contractors look bad with the crappy work he did and the fact he destroyed her bathroom and a connecting wall trying to force payment without her even being home to inspect the finished job.
He also didn't get a permit when he remodeled her bathroom which was later discovered.

The work was really bad. Pictures I have seen was so unbelievable. He was salty because he did a really bad job and couldn’t take responsibility for his work. She was nicer than me. She gave him a chance to fix it

It's her property, her rules. When you're asked to leave a home, you leave irrespective of what services you have rendered. Take them to civil court for non-payment if necessary, but if you stay and vandalize their home, that's trespassing and criminal destruction.

Shame on those dudes for stepping in. If you don't like the service someone is providing you stop them the moment you see a problem and try to rectify the situation. If no solution can be found you pay them what you owe and go with another contractor. You don't wait until they're finished and then refuse to pay what is owed to them. Try ordering a tomahawk steak for dinner, eating every bite, and then informing the waiter you will not be paying because it wasn't to your liking. See how well that goes.
