  • A Chicago couple were stunned when a contractor they hired off HomeAdvisor had a meltdown after becoming disgruntled, smashing the Chicago homeowners’ property before collapsing. HomeAdvisor says it conducts background checks of its service providers, so Moody says he was surprised to learn the contractor he hired to do a repair had a criminal record for burglary. Inside Edition found other homeowners who said they hired contractors through HomeAdvisor only to later learn they had criminal records.

This is a hard and scary situation to be in in the moment. He seems honest and upfront about his struggles and admitting there wasn’t an excuse for his behavior. Hopefully he corrects/pays for those homeowners to repair those damages.
Also, it’s a bit damaging to say that you shouldn’t hire someone who has a criminal record. That just keeps people who actually try to overcome their struggles from getting anywhere positive and contributing to society and tells them that crime will pay, instead of being a good citizen. And remember: criminal record means they have been caught; just because someone doesn’t have a criminal record doesn’t mean they aren’t doing crimes or won’t do a bad job…

Him having a breakdown is not something we should be jeering at or being repulsed by, it's a warning sign he's struggling to let go of the shame of his past and the consequences it has now. He wants his life back together and he should be allowed that chance, but if we never give them resources for aid they have really nowhere to turn to, so then it's no surprise they go back to crime. It is the homeowners decision as to who they hire. When being promised no criminal background that should be something that is delivered on. I’m not saying every felon can not be trusted, but in these situations I stand with the homeowners. If you had the option of choosing a reliable and trustworthy person with no criminal history vs. a felon with a background of burglary, you’re going to say you will choose the felon?
The contractor seems very honest and sincere in his apology and situation and I feel terribly for him, but the homeowners used a website that guaranteed a reliable contractor. That was not delivered in this case.

The contractors filed for bankruptcy and "re-organized" under a new name with a bogus owner (spouse or some other family member).
