I really like how Aragorn and Gimli saved Eowyn. It wasn't a 'I can see you from across the battlefield and will make my way over'. It was just as they were passing through. They didn't know who they just saved.
There's actually a deleted scene where Eowyn was dying (poisoned just like Frodo) due to her stabbing the Witch king. Eomer was tending to her then Aragorn healed her.
I just noticed an interesting detail. When Legolas first jumps on the olyphant, the beast slams its trunk against its tusks as if trying to squish him. Then, when he climbs the back leg, the olyphant swats at him with his tail. That is an incredible attention to detail the animators included and I would like to holler my appreciation at them.

I just commented that on another video. Incredible how this holds up incredibly well compared to the hobbit. In fact? This could release in theatres right now and I wouldn’t question the quality.
Legolas kills a war elephant by himself. Gimli: still only counts as one Gandalf sacrifices himself and slays a balrog. Gimli: Nope, still only one Bard hits the best arrow trickshot in the history of Middle Earth with an improvised bow and slays Smaug while airborne. Gimli: Hmm, good, but only one Frodo becomes the savior of Middle Earth by sneaking into enemy territory and destroying Sauron and a sea of orcs. Gimli: Okay, epic, but only one
I can imagine Eowyn and Faramir telling stories to their kids like: Son: WOW MOMMY YOU KILLED THE WITCH KING! Daddy what were you doing during the Battle of Minas Tirith? Faramir: Your grandfather tried to burn me while I was asleep
@@hjalti0000 Not to mention, it's really Merry's Blade of Westernesse from the Barrow Downs that does the most damage to the Witch-King. Eowyn just had the finishing blow.
@@ZacharyReaper One quote from the book: "But suddenly he too stumbled forward with a cry of bitter pain, and his stroke went wide, driving into the ground. Merry's sword had stabbed him from behind, shearing through the black mantle, and passing up beneath the hauberk had pierced the sinew behind his mighty knee." Another quote: "So passed the sword of the Barrow-downs, work of Westernesse. But glad would he have been to know its fate who wrought it slowly long ago in the North-kingdom when the Dúnedain were young, and chief among their foes was the dread realm of Angmar and its sorcerer king. No other blade, not though mightier hands had wielded it, would have dealt that foe a wound so bitter, cleaving the undead flesh, breaking the spell that knit his unseen sinews to his will." This leads me to believe that Merry's sword broke the spell that made the Witch King invulnerable to normal weapons, and anybody who struck him next would have killed him. It just so happened to be Eowyn.
@@bdonaghu Woah, never realized that at all, thank you kind sir for your information. But if I may ask, what's so special about Merry's sword? Pardon I haven't read the books.
I love how the writers have interpreted the three of their different fighting styles for the big screen: - Gimli resorts to brute force and aims for the jugular, with some occasional headbutting and basically being an unstoppable force. - Aragorn fights like a bandit, by utilizing both his weapon and his fists, isn't afraid to fight dirty. He always finds an opening for both offense and defense. - Legolas is always observing the opponent and its surroundings before exploiting its weaknesses. His heightened elven senses allow him to be always one step ahead of the enemy, and deliver a critical hit.
Add Gandlaf the healer and maybe Elrond as fifth and we have great LotR moba going on. Gimli, the fearless tank, Aragorn the fearless bruiser, Legolas high DPS sniper, Gandalf the Immortal healer and Elrond the All seeking eye with some dps and protection.
The world fades back into white. A guy with an arrow sticking out of his face shares a knowing look with you after staring pointedly at the arrow in your chest. “What’s the last thing you heard?” he asks. “Nineteen,” you reply with a sigh. At least it can’t hurt anymore if you’re dead. “And you?” He’s silent for a moment. Finally he replies. “Thirty-three.”
Most were practical effects and they only used CGI if they absolutely had to. This left a larger CGI budget for the scenes where they did have to use it. Fun fact: peter jackson cloned mammoths and cross bred them with elephants and injected them with extreme growth hormones in order to create mamuluks. Their desire for practical effects know no limits
I love how Aragorn is a deadly swordsman but every now and then throws hands mid-battle. You can take the King out of the Wild, but you can't take the Wild out of the King.
It's on of the things that seperates great swordsmen from average ones. Knowing when and where your gauntlet is more effective than your blade. The wild king indeed!
Theoden just just scream to his men to bring forth the bows and arrows, then when the elephants are closing theoden's men shoot arrows at the same time as theoden's men move backwards. it will basically be a arrow fight between the arrow-men on the elephants vs the arrow-men on the ground. actually... they were filming on a New Zealand army ground with bombs all over the ground. He really did risk his life and so did all the actors haha I swear. Look it up.
Yeah great stuff. Awesome visuals. Hope the far easterling crew...what I call the Asians on the boats didn't suffer to bad. They got absolutely wrecked.
I met the actor playing Gimli recently. He said: "dont tell the elf" is his favorite line from the movie. I asked what he thought about " that still only count as one." " well it does! That elf was always cheating!" After all these years, gimli still claims it so! 😂
He's the one cheating at 2:55. He's calling out his 17th kill when the closest orc to him living or dead is being killed by Aragorn at that very moment.... XD
In this scene, what really stands out to me is the love of a niece for her Uncle. The men in her life want to protect her, but she also wants to do her part. Such a powerful story for these days, we can all work together to help each other reach our goals.
They should do a parody of Lord of the Rings where the elf is killing orcs and is saying "1 million.... 1 million and one....One trillion..." Then the dwarf asks "Did you just say one trillion?" "Yes... Don't judge. It gives me confidence!"
Can we take a moment to appreciate how well done the CGI was done here being well over a decade old at this point? It looks better than most of the stuff coming out today. The digital visual effects team really paid attention to every little detail and didn't just go through the motions to get the videos out of the door.
Its not that shes a woman its the Dúnedain enchanted dagger if she is using normal steel blades it would of just shattered also you cant kill the Nazgûl without killing Sauron ,so the Nazgul would of just fled to barad dur/to the eye of Sauron .
@@tbxmxdog9187 you sure are fun at parties. Im already aware that it's the dagger that made the witch king open for her attack. Im talking about the irony of him saying no man can kill him but he ran into the only woman on the field and got himself rekt'd.
Legolas cut that rope on top of Oliphant and sent all men on top of it plummeting down. From that height they probably all died just from impact. So though Oliphant counts as one, Legolas actually didn't count everybody he killed on top of it. He didn't count those men who fell to their death.
@@uncitoyenfrancais Nah it was definitely a "heads up we need YOU to take this one out". He didn't shout a warning. He shouted a "I've got a priority for you" tone.
Almost 20 years and it still looks better than movies nowadays with a scene showing us a strong woman how powerful she can be.. goosebumps.. what a masterpiece
@@johnhernandez284I think the point being made is that while modern movies hamfist the “muh strong woman who don’t need no man” trope into their movies, this one flows naturally. The witch king couldn’t be killed by any man, but Eowyn isn’t one, so she goes for the kill after the hobbit stabbed him and it still fulfills the prophecy that was told before. Not to mention that she’s a shieldmaiden so her combat makes sense, not some dumb Mary Sue like in Disney’s Star Wars
The film doesn’t get enough credit for how it portrayed Eowyn. I think most can agree that studies and directors try to force the female empowerment aspects in films nowadays and it can come off forced but it was so effortlessly done with her character, the “I’m no man” line is seriously one of the most badass things in any movie period, she’s so great that even in the face of terror she overcomes it for the greater good
I like the sequences of events in the film, but wanted to add that Eowyn went full chad in the book. After the witch king claimed no man could kill him, she said "But no living man am I! You look upon a woman. Éowyn I am, Éomund’s daughter. You stand between me and my lord and kin. Begone, if you be not deathless! For living or dark undead, I will smite you, if you touch him."
Theoden: "I shall help my brothers of Gondor. Aragorn: "I shall save the city and my rightful place on the throne." Eowyn: "This demon hurt my uncle and must be stopped." Gandalf: "I must help raise the spirits of these soldiers of Gondor." Legolas and Gimli to each other: *MOST KILLS AT THE END WIN!!*
Even being the ancient-modern king of the undead does not save a self important tool from death by overconfidence. "Don't buy into your own overhyped legend, crypt-breath."
In the books, there were no ghosts that came to the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. The 'dead' fulfilled their oath by scaring the crap out of the Corsairs of Umbar; men allied to Sauron. Then Aragorn and the Grey Company (led by Ranger Halbarad and sons of Elrond, Elladan, and Elrohir) piloted the Corsairs' ships to the shores of Gondor. They arrived at the nick of the time as things were going very badly for the allies of Gondor. For the FIRST time since the Last Alliance, the standard of Numenor was displayed with the White Tree of Gondor and the Seven Stars wrought of mithril. Only then, it was a massacre of Sauron's forces. Eomer moving southwards, Imrahil and the knights of Dol Amroth to the east, and Aragorn and company north. It is one of the most stirring chapters in the book ...
One of the best trilogy's ever made. Great characters, great acting, great story, great writing, great support cast, great emotional connection to the whole adventure.
3:38 is so funny to me. There's that whole build-up where you think Éowyn might be killed by Gothmog, and then Aragorn and Gimli come in and tag-team him like any other orc. They don't even realize Éowyn was there.
Yeah that was awesome tho since it will be a huge plot hole if they knew Eowyn was there since no one knew she was in the battle anyways. Except for Theoden or Merry of course.
@@whyisblue923taken to be fair Eowyn did mess him up earlier on in the fight (just before the witch king attack) so he has a reason for leaping... mix that in with Gothmog's arm and the fact that he was pretty out of shape at that point (he was used for his mind, not his might) and he wouldn't be that hard to deal with if you've got any semblence of skill.
I never noticed, in that last shot of Pelennor Fields you can see the last of the Mumakil fleeing back to Mordor and Rohirrim breaking the chase and riding back to the city. Its amazing the little things you miss when every scene has so much to look at.
Justin Humphrey I wish he would’ve killed bran; the world of GoT became so stale after season 5 now the people of westros whose population is probably non existent and it’s city’s destroy will now have bran (a psychopath) has its leader....
That look on Theoden's face. It seems to say "For crying out loud...... what next?" And I swear, Legolas fights like he entered all the cheat codes at the beginning.
Always love the fact that all other soldiers fought hard for their lives and saw Gimli with Legolas made the battlefield their own personal "gameshow." Aragorn: "You okay guys? We're fighting here." Legolas and Gimli: "Yes, we know it. We're just having fun here. Don't mind us. Do your job, Men." Hilarious.
@@ThranduilCalaquendi And somewhere amongst the Elves of Mirkwood, and too among the Dwarves of Erebor, were the unusual cries of a single Hobbit and Man in the midst of battle: "Twenty-three! Twenty-four!" "Twenty-Four? Not bad for a Man, I'm on Twenty-Six!"

Yeah this is why I don’t fully understand the love for the battle scenes. They are well constructed conceptually but then there is these three just running through everything in a comedic fashion and completely ruins the drama. They didn’t need the undead, the slaughtered hundreds of Uruk Hai at the end of the first movie by themselves, they could have done it here too
Everyone is talking about Legolas's badassery, and yes, that was badass beyond measures, but I also love how Aragorn swarms through all those orcs with his badass moves.
She has so much more character than captain marvel and rey. From an admirer of Aragon to a warrior on the battlefields of Minas Tirith finally Queen of Rohan. The actor brought the character to life.
GladiatorKnightGhost Well, in the movie as Theoden talks to her he sort of implies that she will be her successor, as well as in the Tow Towers I think. However in the book, Theoden dies without knowing she was even there and I think he speaks to Eomer but can’t remember, and yes he ultimately becomes king of Rohan in the books as you said.
Just like Rey, she didn't have a lot of training, she did train with the sword as you saw in the two towers movie though. You notice on the battlefield however, that she's also not the greatest warrior who ever lived. She is afraid but tries to fight through her fears. I actually think that is what LOTR does so well in general, the side-characters are so important to the story and in many ways just as important as the main characters. Sam more than anyone, who is actually the true hero of the whole story. But also Merry and Pippin, Faramir, Eowyn. They don't kill dozens of orcs in a couple of minutes, but when it matters, they are in the right place at the right time. Killing the witch king, the march of the ents, allowing Frodo and Sam to escape and several more moments like that.
My son is 11 and can't sit still for 3 hours at a time yet, so I'm not allowing him to see any clips from the movies so we can watch them together when he's ready.
3:39 i swear that dude was a big threat to the whole plot line and they literally killed him like he was one of the other orcs...they aragorn, gimili, and legolas are just too OP
@@EmDub01 eh, to his credit Gothmog would probably have avoided Gimli, Legolas and Aragorn at any cost if he had the option. Gothmog was there to lead the orc armies, not to fight. He was physically crippled but tactically gifted.
Yeah suffice to say, most people agree that the way the movies portrayed the Army of the Dead was terrible and plot-breaking. Funny enough, Peter Jackson claimed to have hated the Army of the Dead and felt it was unrealistic, but decided to keep them in, "for the fans." Well, he not only kept them, but gave them a greater role as well as make them even more unrealistic, and actual plot-breaking. This is something everyone seems to agree on.
rare cuzz To be more specific, they they scared the pirates off their ships (they jumped off their ships in fear of the dead, with a good portion of them drowning as a result). Aragorn then filled the now-empty ships with about 60ish Dunedain rangers, and a lot more Gondorian reinforcements...And those were the reinforcements that came in Gondor and Rohan's aid that finally turned the tide of the battle.
Other than knowing the Mûmakil don’t exist, and that they’re computer generated, I actually can not tell that they are. Their movements, the way they look, the shadows on their bodies, everything looks phenomenal.
When I read tLoftR The Two Towers I thought that mûmakil were like normal elephants in height, but their size in film make them appear way more frightening. The scene when they walk towards the rohirrim is amazing, and the cgi is in another level.
1:05 That sound...It's almost as scary as Vader's Breathing and the sound of the igniting of a Lightsaber...The way the Morgul blade thrums with evil...Chills, every time!
Always puzzled me (having forgotten the books I read over 30 years ago), how Eowyn managed to kill the Witch King. Turns out that Merry was given a magical blade by Tom Bombadil (from the book but not in the movie) and when he stabbed the Witch King, it lifted a spell which allowed mortal blades to have an effect.
Spoken to the Witch King by an elven prophet. "No man shall kill you." Basically, the Witch King took it too seriously and didn't give thought that there are races that aren't Men (capitalized to reference race of Men) or that the prophecy didn't refer to women.
@@Kreschavier yup Merry isn't a man(human) and Eowyn isn't a man(male) two loopholes that you don't really get to argue when you get shinned by a half-pint and then get stabbed in the face.

Rest of the characters: busy fighting Meanwhile Legolas and Gimli: Counting to see who gets more kills 😂😂😂 Also Aragorn whenever he sees trouble: Legolas 😂😂😂
Eowyn was lowkey 1 of the best fighters in the series with some of the biggest take downs in that battle all the while being an amateur and scared what a legend.
She's not an amateur or scared in the book, more like an Amazon with a genuine death wish. The first time Merry looks at her he gets scared because he sees in her eyes that she doesn't want to live anymore. She deals with depression until she hooks up with Faramir, but she is one of the best fighters in the West, and up there with Gandalf for bravest character in the entire story. She only fights the Nazgûl 1v1 because everyone else runs away, as everyone always does. The books make her very...effeminate. In reality she was written as more of a soldier than a noble lady, though tolkien usually gave his characters traits of both.
Imagine being a civilian, hold up in the city, witnessing the end-times, thinking it couldn't get any worse, when suddenly a terrifying and all consuming wave of grotesque ghosts appear and engulf the entirety of the city. You would have no idea that they were good guys and they were there to help.
Kind of reminds me of the story of Passover. God just wafting through Egypt, dealing death to innumerable firstborns. Imagine (assuming that story were real) just knowing you needed lambs blood on your doorway because this dude named Moses told you to, And then as the night went on you heard progressively more cries of grief throughout the city. Chills. And people call the Judeo-Christian God merciful 😂.

I also love how this also connects to the Hobbit, Legolas was raised in the forest of Mirkwood, so it's only natural that he becomes more broken when there's something to climb on, it also shows he's used to fight in heights and not exactly plane surfaces like tree branches or the back of a giant elephant
Watching this in 2020. Even after all these years, this scene is still as badass as it was back then. Legolas was a walking cheat code and Eowyn was Iron Woman. Peter Jackson's Ring Trilogy is legendary.
In fact, I Don't know if you read the book but the Swan Knights were in Minas Tirith, it's them who saved Faramir after the charge to retake Osgiliath and they were the only one to dare hold the front gate against the Witch King. Also their leader, Imrahil, was quite the character since he was brought as an equal to Aragorn and Eomer. No other blade, not though mightier hands had wielded it, would have dealt that foe a wound so bitter, cleaving the undead flesh, breaking the spell that knit his unseen sinews to his will."
This leads me to believe that Merry's sword broke the spell that made the Witch King invulnerable to normal weapons, and anybody who struck him next would have killed him. It just so happened to be Eowyn.

I love how the writers have interpreted the three of their different fighting styles for the big screen:
- Gimli resorts to brute force and aims for the jugular, with some occasional headbutting and basically being an unstoppable force.

The film doesn’t get enough credit for how it portrayed Eowyn. I think most can agree that studies and directors try to force the female empowerment aspects in films nowadays and it can come off forced but it was so effortlessly done with her character, the “I’m no man” line is seriously one of the most badass things in any movie period, she’s so great that even in the face of terror she overcomes it for the greater good
It works because it was said that the witch king of angmar wouldn't fall by the hand of man.
MEN => Humanity
Not men/women
But he does get stab with a magic blade before being vulnerable and getting killed so …
Yeah real "badass" line. You're an idiot.
It didn't really have much to do with the "studio and director" though, did it, considering it's directly taken from Tolkien's book...
Aragorn: "I shall save the city and my rightful place on the throne."
Eowyn: "This demon hurt my uncle and must be stopped."
Gandalf: "I must help raise the spirits of these soldiers of Gondor."
Legolas and Gimli to each other: *MOST KILLS AT THE END WIN!!*
Also Gimli: THAT STILL ONLY COUNT AS ONE!
Well it’s because Legolas and Gimli are sidekick characters present mostly just for action and the occasional “forbidden friendship” trope
"You fool. No man can kill me." Gets killed by a Hobbit and a woman. I will always love this scene.
Well... Hobbits are halflings, so technically they count as a sub-species for humans. Plus, they look human enough to me.

Imagine if the ghosts didn't come. Legolas, Gimili, and Aragorn would have looked so stupid.
They had to bring the ghosts - neither the dwarf nor the elf could have counted that far i guess
She has so much more character than captain marvel and rey. From an admirer of Aragon to a warrior on the battlefields of Minas Tirith finally Queen of Rohan. The actor brought the character to life.
Eowyn was not Queen of Rohan; Eomer became King, so his wife Lothiriel was Queen. Eowyn married Faramir and became Princess of Ithilien, however.

THANKS LEGOLAS...
You can poach elephants? Like eggs?
👀
Ever watch the movies? Eomer killed two with one spear, legolas killed one with 3 arrows
Eowyn is such a fucking boss, she was terrified in the face of certain death and didn't back down. Such a great character.

I still remember seeing this in theaters. The bit at the end where the ghost swarm over the Oliphants like ants brought out a burst of laughter and applause from the audience.
The greatest part of this series is the absolute heroism from the characters when facing horrific and drastic odds

Rest of the characters: busy fighting
Meanwhile Legolas and Gimli: Counting to see who gets more kills 😂😂😂
Also Aragorn whenever he sees trouble: Legolas 😂😂😂
At 4:19 that scream is in every movie

Oppa ork-nam style...
It sounds so fake
jort its supposed to
Every movie and every video game
@@Thechezbailey Not gunna lie, really couldn’t care less about the books. Games and films only 👌🏾
@@KizaTheShaddow you literally just bragged about not reading lol
@@sitcomchristian6886 Pleas look up the definition of 'bragged' in the dictionary. That is not what I did at all wow. Go to school man.
Legolas: kills a war elephant by himself.
Gimli: still only counts as one
Also Gimli: kills two orcs immediately.
God just wafting through Egypt,
dealing death to innumerable firstborns.
Imagine (assuming that story were real) just knowing you needed lambs blood on your doorway because this dude named Moses told you to,
And then as the night went on you heard progressively more cries of grief throughout the city.
Chills.
And people call the Judeo-Christian God merciful 😂.
I always wondered how many people saw that, assumed that was the ballgame and just cut their own wrists. Probably axed the kids first too.
The dead only beat the Corsairs. It was actually additional Gondor soldiers brought as reinforcements.
@Morgan Allen I’d still take the Hobbit movies over Hungary Games any day of the week.
People who were so shocked at Legolas Jedi powers in The Hobbit....it’s like did you ever watch LOTR?
He has one moment like that against super big elephant and everyone else also did something. In Hobbit he is just unstoppable, physics don't matter for him.
Jedi powers?
@@Сайтамен lol everyone else did something sure but the elephant feat pretty much shows his capabilities. it doesnt matter if he wasnt always going super saiyan
He wasn't even in the book. lol
That's one of the reasons he's OP in the movie. They had no more points of reference for what Legolas actually did.
I also love how this also connects to the Hobbit, Legolas was raised in the forest of Mirkwood, so it's only natural that he becomes more broken when there's something to climb on, it also shows he's used to fight in heights and not exactly plane surfaces like tree branches or the back of a giant elephant
"Fool! No man can kill me."
Dude walked right into that one.
0:23 theoden is like 'we have fought orcs, oliphants and now this?!'
His facial expression was very much saying: "I'm going to report this to GM so muuuuch!"

He was like "ohh come on"
G: That still only counts as one☺☺

The best part 😂
@TheLatiosnlatias02 Shall I find you a box?
But the elephants were too big
Alright then, come on!!!!!
Bruh the way he stands up at 1:01 gives me chills every time
Love that cool metallic noise that his sword makes as it passes the camera too
I will never never get tired of lord of the rings battles thank you
The complete battle, edited, and uploaded in 4k. What an absolute legend.
I saw this movie when I was 8. I'm 26 now. I will die in 50+ years and LOTR will still be the greatest movies I've ever seen
3:49 Legolas be like “ *challenge accepted!* “
Absolutely incredible seeing this scene and film on the big screen again for the 20th anniversary showing a few nights ago! Masterpiece forever!
Tried giving his video a BIG like....
Gimli: “That still only counts as one!”

Watching this in 2020. Even after all these years, this scene is still as badass as it was back then. Legolas was a walking cheat code and Eowyn was Iron Woman. Peter Jackson's Ring Trilogy is legendary.
@TheLatiosnlatias02 xD
Imagine how badass this could have been if Aragorn had also been accompanied by the Dunedain and the Swan Knights tho :/
For Aragorn, in the book, he did in fact came with the Dunedain, the marines of Perlargir and the soldiers of Lamedon! But yes you're right, it would have been awesome!! ^^
Like how in the fuck did they not include that?
@@Lerod644 And archers from Blackroot Vale
@@forests.9597 were there not already in Minas Thirit. I mean i think i read somewhere that Duinhir's sons were killed by Mumakhils While malin a break from the City. Correct me if im wrong
@@Lerod644Yes, but some mercenaries from Erech joined Aragorn's host
Hahaha, I love how Aragorn casually shouts LEGOLAS when he sees the Mumakhil 😂 whenever Aragorn sees trouble, he shouts only one name : LEGOLAS 😂
And Always love the fact that all other soldiers fought hard for their live and saw Legolas with Gimli made the battlefield like gameshow 🤣
When Legolas turned around to see a war elephant all armored up with a bunch of warriors on it. And Legolas just goes for it like it’s totally normal 😂 the little move of his face, satisfied by his own badass moment 😂
Gimli : “That still only counts as one !” Hahaha 😂
So cute love-hate relationship scene 😂❤
RiritSendi
Can we get a total war lord of the rings game already lol?
i wish they knew how much i would pay for that
They've had several games like that already. They've been out for almost a decade now 😂😂
LOTR Battle for Middle Earth 1 & 2
There is a really cool mod for Medieval 2 called Third Age Total War. And there are still people working on the Submod called Divide and Conquer. Can only recommend it!
Molllendo Yeah but a new game with the gameplay like the new warhammer total wars would be awesome
We have
Just imagine if Gondor Soldiers came out of the ships.
Battle would have been 10 times better.
Or if we had the easterlings stand their ground as the orcs fled
Yeah but Reinforcements means hope. And if the defenders of Minas Tirith sallied out as well with Swan Knights in the vanguard they would slaughter everything and fight like beasts just like in the books where it says that each Gondorian killed at least 5 orcs before dying.
Strider
but it would take 10 times longer to win the battle
No it wouldn't the orcs were already routed and less than 10 mumakil were left alive. All they had to do was charge.
I still remember how everybody lost their shit when Legolas did that 3:53
It's not a matter of how realistic the CGI was, it was the emotion we all had and how invested we all were with the characters
