      Everyone evidently wants to take advanced diesel injection diagnostic advise, Not from Bosch or a GM tsb, but from a guy in a un-finished home garage with a handheld AutoZone code reader 🤔 Seems legit

    Josh you're the man! Lots of DMax TH-camrs out there but their channels are mostly about trying to entertain us with their day-to-day lives and pumping their merch. You create the perfect mix of entertainment, merchandise and REAL information and education about our trucks. I enjoy watching you work on your truck, showing us the do's and the dont's and the mistakes that you've made as well. I follow a handful of guys but you are #1 on my list buddy! 👍

    • @jarotex
      @jarotex 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      By mistakes of course I mean the pitfalls and situations we can run into, and those things that you wish you had done differently sometimes. You keep it real world. Most of these guys on TH-cam don't even work on their own trucks and when they do they edit everything out to be nice and smooth which is not reality in most cases. You rock brotha! Oh... also trying to keep the wife comments to a minimum so as not to be creepy Lol. But, WOW.... 😁

    GM has a service bulletin out on this it’s commonly known as a “type writer tick” here’s a little tid-bit explaining that the noise is resonated from the crank journal bearings. Although injector ticking is an issue the issue you’re hearing is from your oiling system and engine vibrations/harmonics.
    “This noise is caused by the relationship of the engine cylinder block, crankshaft journals, bearing inserts and the oil film. This relationship may allow a vibration that resonates through the cylinder block and is heard as a metallic ticking noise. The noise could be described as an irregular ticking or clacking sound, like random typing on a mechanical typewriter.
    This condition has been present in diesel engines produced for the last 20 or more years. The overall noise reduction in engines produced today makes this noise seem new when, in fact, it was masked by other noises in the past. Many manufacturers such as Isuzu, Hino, Mitsubishi, and Nissan report a similar condition in their diesel engines. Testing and engine teardowns with this condition reveal no condition that would affect reliability or durability of this engine.”

      And certain brands of oil will make the tick louder and smow make is quiter, and it most of the time comes from the passenger side, according to dmax forms , just live with it

      Isn’t the typewriter tick erratic and not constant?

  • @richardlemke4240
    @richardlemke4240 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Mine developed the typing tick after my last oil change, so I went on my diesel truck forum and posed the question lots of answers but the one that was most common was "do nothing after about a thousand miles it will go away or quiet enough that you can't hear it". and that was the best advice because it came out to be true after about a thousand miles I didn't hear it anymore. So with my lastest oil change, its back, I guess I'll be annoyed for another thousand miles...

  • @ipotch1

    Ive got an LBZ with the type writer tick. When I first got the truck I was running Rotella in it and the tick would stick around for about 1,500 miles after an oil change. I switched to amsoil 15W-40 Marine and Heavy Duty Diesel Oil. I rarely get the type writer tick anymore after oil changes and my amsoil dealer was explaining to me the Marine oil is cheaper and has better engine benefits because it doesn't have to comply with all road laws. Don't quote me on that, its what my amsoil dealer was trying to explain to me and it made since to me so I listened to him. Do your own research.

    Josh, Im a big follower of your videos and I recalled this video from a few years back. I stumbled on a video from @CruisinWithKevin where he had the typewriter issue but solved it with Mobile oil. Context, Ive tried every expensive oil out there and even purchases a set of spare heads to rebuild at my leisure. I tried this out today, and after YEARS of going nuts… it unbelievably worked. Ive even tried Mobil Delvac 1 which is pricey but without luck. I drove 30 min on Mobile Turbo Diesel Truck oil today and it literally halved the typewriter noise. Crazy

    This is pretty helpful and a huge relief, my lmm has recently started to tick but it was after I changed the oil today. It makes sense that that it is the oil and that there could be some air in that synthetic oil making that tick. The tick goes away in my truck after it has warmed up. Thanks again for the info definitely helped a lot

    It’s me agin Shannon the one swapping the lml. Well just put it all back together yesterday and driving about 200 miles today for work. Low and behold I got that exact sound now and I was thinking crap I just put this engine in. Well the little unplugging truck just confirmed I have a bad injector. Much better than a whole other engine. I was so pissed when I heard the noise today. I’m going to snag one of the old injectors off the old engine and replace the one that quit tapping when Unhooked.

    Just FYI, all Duramax 6.6 engines have a tick or "typewriter" ticking noise. It comes from the crank journals, usually at lower to mid rpm. There are GM service bulletins that explain this. Changing oil brand and or viscosity can quiet this some, which may be what you are experiencing with the Hot Shots oil treatment. There is no "FIX" for the Duramax tick.

  • @clintbrock8052
    @clintbrock8052 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I got the tick immediately after switching to Amsoil. If you use it, don't expect your noise go away. I used Delo before and didn't have any noises ever. I'm going dump it and try Schaeffer's synshield. I know a guy who had this issue with a few Fords. Schaeffer's immediately stopped the ticking on both trucks. If that doesn't work, it's back to the big box of Delo at Costco.

    Had the ticking in my 06 Duramax. It started after I filled up with diesel. Added Howes fuel treatment and it cleared up. Happens more in the winter with the winter blended fuel. My truck is deleted and it seems it's very picky with fuel.

    My noise just started a 400 mile trip. It increases with acceleration. No power loss. I have an airdog but still have the engine fuel filter, which has a small diesel leak. Not sure if it's that or a exhaust manifold leak. Injectors are new only 10k on them.

  • @LP59GoldTop
    @LP59GoldTop 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Quick tip from an Old Wrench for finding exhaust leaks:
    !!REMEMBER, SAFETY FIRST. USE YOUR BURN RESISTANT SHOP GLOVES!!
    Wet down several shop towels that have been rolled together and grab them with long nose or vise grip pliers. With the engine running, carefully press the wet towels against the area of the exhaust manifold or pipes that you think may be leaking. If your suspect area IS leaking, the towels will quiet it down until you pull them away.
    BE CAREFUL. This is a trick I used to find exhaust leaks, and yes, I burned hands and arms while doing it. If this manner of diagnosis is beyond your comfort zone then don't do it. Skin melts fast!

    Try Enerburn. It's a fuel additive. 1 OZ for every 75 liters of fuel. It really works for eliminating any carbon deposits by making the fuel burn complete. It is formulated for engines with EGR systems, but having no carbon coming out of the valves reduces carbon knock. I've tested this for hundreds of thousands of miles. It really works. I've never had to force a burn.

    Hi I have a brand new 2022 HD AT4 with excessive ticking this is a good topic to talk about . This would be a good topic to go over with the community mine just got the transmission pulled to check on the fly will be installed a new fly wheel and torque converter mind you my truck at 6000 miles on it they have the GM rep coming out next week?. That's not only thing that's going on with it at deceleration coming to a stop sign it sounds like the taking is turned into a loud knock like an injector or something is about ready to hand grenade I don't know what's going on really disappointing. Let me know if you have any ideals. Thank you for your time and a great videos

    Often your ticks or valve noise will go away running conventional oil. More likely to have a tick with synthetic, as its typically thinner dispite weight ratings.

    I know that your truck is ja diesel. I have a Chevrolet Silverado 1500 5.3 liter engine and it ticks also. Not sure if it would help on your truck is that I used Lucas upper cylinder fuel injection cleaner and it quite my ticking down a lot. Sometimes I don't even hear it. You may want to give the Lucas a try! I believe on the bottle it says that it can be used for deisel and gas vehicles. Good luck

    Off subject! Oil pressure goes to nothing on gauge and goes up with rpm’s. Changed sensor. Cold oil pressure is good and gets worse with hotter oil. What do I need to change or do. I love the Duramax but I hate how close the gauge gets to the red. They need to change this

      I could be completely wrong it’s tough to say but do some research on symptoms of a faulty oil pump. That might be your problem. But it’s hard to know until someone looks at your truck in person.

    I have a problem with my 2007.5 3500hd lmm duramax it through the code P160C it says that that code is the glow plug and injectors injection pressure and im not sure if it means feul pump or problem with the ecm

  • @zackk695

    I could not find the bad injector using 3 different diesel mechanics. I ran a full bottle of diesel Kleen and a bottle of transmission fluid in the gas tank and it runs perfect. It’s sad we live in a time that people in service don’t know what they’re doing. In this case mechanics suck bad. They give up way too soon and if the computer can’t tell them they don’t know how to figure it out.

    GM released a bulletin on that stating that it is a result of the Duramax's natural acoustical occurrences within the engines manufacturing tolerances and design of the engine block... something to that effect...I interpreted it to mean that it's supposed to sound like that! lololololol 🤣

    I have an lml, had number 8 injector with bad rates. Got it replaced as I was to busy to it myself. So now when the truck warms up that injector knocks? Did I get ripped off. Balance rates are not that good either. Over 8 warmed up on number 8 in drive.
    Help

  • @jamesyounger8741

    Hotshots is the bomb ass additive. for the first dose use the extreme in a tankfull then switch to the EDT. Also using the stiction eliminator in motor oil and transmission. quieted both down and makes the motor quieter I've noticed.

    FORD OWNERS 6.7... if you have the typewriter tick. could be collapsed lifter. Not so good news. hard to May require cylinder head removal to change them. They have a service bulletin out there for this issue. My buddy IGNOREED as some people say....Broke all the rocker arms on one bank. Not good. OR just do like me buy a DURAMAX and off with the ford.
