I just had my very first house party last saturday as the dj where i didn't know the people i was gonna play for because i always played for my friends before. I didn't have any expectations, i was only hoping it's gonna be a good time and oh boy it was the best.... Seeing people dancing on tables, come up to me telling me this is efing good, constantly asking me if i need anything and just seeing them having the time their life in general, felt really really good. After my set many of them shook hands with me saying it was simply amazing and they loved it. I will never forget that night
I know the feeling, very addictive, almost a feeling of fame on some level! It's nice being popular and tuning into a crowd is a real talent - well done, sounds like. you're a natural!
Vey very well said and love your attitude. It’s very relevant and applies to life in general not just a DJ for sure. Oh and the reoccurring nightmare was a home run. I’ve definitely gotten distracted and looked at my time left on song and it’s red with less than 10 seconds and nothing cued up
This is 100% true. I feel like sometimes, when you expect too much out of something, all you are setting up for is disaster. The more you have fun playing for people, the more that will show in your music.
Been playing at one really busy bar for the past month every friday or saturday. Man, this recurring nightmare hit me deeply, sadly it came true for me during my 2nd performance (first one was meh but I was optimistic) but after the bar and the whole dancefloor went quit during my 2nd performance it really messed me up. I trainwrecked a few times after and even accidentally turned off the song on a wrong deck and the bar went quiet AGAIN. I was super embarrassed and messed up but the guy who runs the whole thing gave me another chance the week after. I was over-preparing and anxious for the first hour and the crowd was feeling that, but once I got more comfortable and started to enjoy the night along with people everything just clicked for me. Anyways, I want to say that this “negative” way of thinking really helps me cause now I always tell myself that I can’t possibly do worse than that one time and that helps me immensely to take some pressure off. Great talk Andrew! Love your videos. Is there a video you or someone can point me towards where you are explaining how to mix different genres of vocal driven music as seamless as possible?
good words of wisdom!! If your music can make an impact on at least one person, IMO its all worth it. sometimes it happens in one year, sometimes, it happens in five years. sometimes it doesn't happen at all. but it will definitely never happen if you don't try at all
I love you brother. It's like your new videos read my mind at times. My first few slow gigs, or if I make a mistake during a live set...at first it was so much panic. I am getting used to not taking myself too seriously and having fun...now when I mess up I will totally joke it off with the crowd like "sorry guys. It's my first night DJing...let me know if this next song is any good." And then drop a song I KNOW the crowd will like and suddenly my mistake is forgotten... I do still need to learn how to stay positive when the venue is slower...i used to let it bother me...this video though came right on time...i just need to go in. Have fun, practice as much as I can really tap in to the positive energy... all your advice is SO appreciated. I do plan on purchasing your DJ courses when I have the extra money on hand. Cheers 🍻! So many of your videos have literally helped ME change my life...it's quite amazing! Thank you!!!!
This is interesting that you bring this up because this has basically been my mind set. Why? Because I don't want to care about it so much because if I think about it too much I'll will not enjoy myself on top of being disappointed. I work a day job and I don't get out much to mingle with other DJ's much at all. I value the opportunity to meet other people that enjoy the music and DJing because that is how you can network and make friends as well. Not saying that I never daydream about being that one DJ that sticks out and just owns every other DJ's set at at party - that is something I just keep to myself. Everyone has a different skill level but if you click with a mutual understanding that you are there for the music and the people it doesn't matter.
Really good video with a good point. I learned a while back that going in with massive expectations quite often lands up in some kind of disappointment. I approach my gigs with no expectations of how successful it will be. And this has helped me a lot. I take the gig as it comes and try to give my best show no matter what the outcome. It doesn't matter if there's 1000 in the crowd or 10. They deserve the best show
Excellent video as always Andrew. I often put too much pressure on myself and get quite anxious before playing a set, trying to over-prepare a set. Whereas I often find that I play much better when I improvise!
This!!!!^^^^^ I do get anxious and overthink everything! Thankfully I play every week now and it is forcing me to grow, calm down, have fun, and most of all, remember how LUCKY I am that I have even played a single DJ set live! Let alone REGULARLY! I constantly have to remind myself there is a reason I got hired to do this... (literally got hired as a DJ before I even had my first board....was hired based on my music selection alone) Well, this last weekend Saturday gig was an absolute BANGER of a night and many people praised my work. Not that I care about the praise... it was just good to know that I accomplished the job of CREATING a good time for the people who were there which is just a good reward for any DJ to just feel,...well... welcome! We had a slow night recently and I let an acquaintance of mine who was being jokingly critical of me take over the decks for 15 minutes... he only last through one transition and quickly realized how much work I had put into making my dj sets smooth and cohesive over the course of 6 hours EVERY WEEK! So it was another confidence boosting moment to see someone who THOUGHT they could do what we do quickly realize how much actually goes into all of this lol.
WOW! This video showing up now after my first gig this past weekend is heaven sent! I didn't train wreck or turn off the wrong channel, but I proberly over prepared and when I didn't hit about 50% of my planned transitions as I would get upset (internally). I will say like most first time DJ's I was controller trained and this was my first time on CDJ's. The promoter knew this and immediately said if I have any questions, etc just ask. Which was great, but still what artist isn't a perfectionist. I won't happily except anything but my definition of acceptable or good. At any rate, I got great feedback from the few people that were there, as I was first on the line up, and they said they would have me back...although this could have been them just being nice, I know now I need to upgrade my equipment. Lastly, I know controllers are a great inexpensive way to enter into DJ-ing BUT once you decide you want to perform in venues, YOU MUST master playing on CDJ's! It was great experience, I got a feel for reading the crowd, the difference in a club sound system and trust me, no one is watching you as much as you think...so do what you need too on the decks and just enjoy it, it will go faster then you think. My first set was 1.5 hours, it felt like 20min.
You're going to make mistakes. As long as you accept that and can move on, in the moment, and continue your set you'll be fine. Nothing has to be perfect. Look at James Hype... One of his most popular techniques is when to shrinks a loop using the jog wheel.... It's never on beat when he starts it and no one cares because what comes after is AMAZING and that's all that matters. Have zero expectations, take your set step by step and most importantly RELAX AND HAVE FUN.
Awesome video! The biggest fear i struggle with is not knowing what to play next, during practice sessions its no problem but when its actual time to perform i kinda go blank 😅 and can't think of what to play. And whenever I do plan out a mix I find myself burning through all the songs so quick.
Take into account all scenarios. Good and bad. Prepare for both. How can it succeed, how can it go wrong. What should I do to succeed? What should I do to avoid it going wrong? If you have both scenarios framed into your mind, the good will be a great, but humble victory, and the bad will be a modest disappointment, but none of either will lead you to false expectations.
thank you was another instructive vidio .when I'm playing at home in my room I feel good and I try something but now the stream then I feel nervous even though I only have 1 viewer and then now the September stream then I'm already nervous while you know somewhere that it's going to be okay
defo top guy . My first gig last month was a nightmare , dropped my lap top (serato) half hr before , smashed and dead ,,, couldnt use my nv 2 , had to play blind on nexus2 with an old memory stick (not recordbox) no bpms .... then a friend pulled out my stick half way thro thinking i was using cds . i was destroyed .ha
Hey, would be cool to see you mix on 4 band eq, I learnt how to mix through your videos and took on your eq style, but now I have a V10 and 4 band feels quite different to 3 band eq, just wondering what how youd take on a 4 band eq.

No expectations at start leads to more than expected at the end 🤓
Very simple and it works all the time

I had many times the same dream (or nightmare) you described at the beginning of the video and I know a bunch of DJ who had the same too!!! LOL
Can you please make a video about playing at a bar that doesn't have a dance floor pleaseee?
