I got started on your channel much later in your timeline, and now I'm going back and watching some of the older videos. Jesus. I had no idea your boat wasn't brand-new. Watching all the work you put into it is absolutely wonderful.
Yeah buddy two of our favor sailng Channel TH-camrs do a meet-up that's great looks like y'all had a great time great job on the rudders that has to feel so good knowing that that job is done just to finish up hooking everything up be safe

My questions are; 1. how do you ground electrical work on a boat? 2. how do you protect your electrical systems and appliances from a lightning strike hitting your mast (the mast could be aluminum or composite materials, but some rigging components are steel) or some other metal object on or about your deck? 3. When you refit, your salon table for example, do you prepare as-built drawings and material lists? I admire your approach to engineering, very calm and well thought out. With the help of an intelligent woman you have it made, good luck from Australia..
You guys are just sooooooooo much fun !! Happy you were able to connect with Johan and Malin. I had mentioned to them when they said they were in the Lake, that you were there and should connect. Don't know if it was my suggestion as it doesn't matter. Happy you 5 connected. Love you guys !! 😀. 👍👍
How cool that you met up with Ran Sailing (Malin and Johan). They were the first channel I subscribed to. Good job getting the rudders back in. All that hard work paid off with a quick and easy reassembly. Looking forward to next week's episode.
Anxious to see how the wheel we sit in relation with how the helmsman will be positioned when steering. Assuming there will be a captains chair of some kind at the wheel. Still amazed at your attention to details! Your girls are a really big help with most of ,these projects. Compass not so much. He is there for the “Cute” factor.
Hey Teal. Just a thought, you could make a rubber disk that will fit in the hole on the sugar scoop that the ram shaft sticks through. The disk should be a flexible rubber with an x cut in it, to let the ram out and keep most of a water splash.
Anytime you have OBL & Ran together on one video its a hit! Looking forward to seeing that wheel working next week. Great job guys. Another wonderful video. GOD bless you guys. JC
I live in Redmond and look for your boat from the freeway everytime I go through Seattle. I love your videos and I also went down to meet Johan and Malin while they were at CSR Marine. They were two of the nicest people and I thoroughly enjoyed meeting and talking to them for a short time. I even filmed them leaving the locks. You keep up the good work. Maybe one day I'll get to meet you guys too!
Two of my favorite sailing VLOGS getting together. Great. I like the closeness of this sailing community. They get with Sailing Zatara, that would be a good get together, too.
Huge fan of your work, I haven't seen this kind of quality and skill in a boat refit. Something that would make great content, when you haul out, is a full inspection of the boat. I just want to see if the inspector could find something wrong. My guess is that you are sitting on over 1.5 million in equity, would be fun if you could find out an approximation on the market value of your boat.
Love the touch of ocd 😉 And of course RAN. You know you’re watching TH-cam, when a Norwegian liking a Swede 😁 Happy Easter 🐣 Glad Påsk 🐣 ,,,,,,,/),,,,,,
Well thought out skilled, practical, composite craftsmanship .....and video production. Tip: starboard edge can be simply finished to factory smooth glossy edge by simply dragging a straight blade across the edge........(much like using a scraper on figured wood - Do it before you router round over, or bevel your edges) Best Chris
lol,you came on,just as I went outside to shovel another snow storm here in South Dakota.Last time i wrote in,we were getting a snow storm, about 3 weeks ago.It rain 1st,turning to freezing sleet.Nothing like driving to work Wed morning, freezing sleet, mix in with Thunder and Lighting. What more can anyone ask for, roaming buffalo invade my town, lol.
I really like your meticulous attention to details and methodical approach. I find your reasoning behind you decisions very informative. It was interesting to watch you implement hydraulic steering. If I understand correctly this is strictly passive hydraulics, no pressure input form engine connected pump. What I fail to understand is why you choose to mount fill in plug on the roof. You drilled a second access hole in the kitchen above the Capilano pump. Why not mount a bracket in there and a fill in plug. No need to drill into the roof. Did I miss something?
Linh, you are so sneaky, I bet you set that one up. Now Teal is gonna have to cut that finger off. We all know that chicken skin does not wash off as cheese does. 😁
Lol, did I set Teal up? 🤔🤔🙄🙄 I have way more tricks up my sleeve and still need to pay him back for that shower scene. He needs to learn not to mess with the master of pranks. 😜😜
Two of my favorite youtube channels, RAN and you. And Teal has a phobia with chicken skin, how predictable.....thanks for a great video, with love from texas....
I guess Teal already aligned the rudders parallel to each other. That must be a piston pump to keep internal oil leakage to a minimum. Even then, the helm wheel probably cannot have a neutral marker.....but it is a very simple rudder control system. I like. Will the cylinder rod hole in the hull be sealed with a rod clearance tube? Like you three, Johan & Malin are good people.....
Great video as always. I question why the fill hole needed to be on deck and not just above the wheel where there is less chance for water intrusion? But I trust you know best as I am not there with you. Everything sure looks great!!
Hi Teal! I’m curious if you are going to install some sort of bellows for where the linkages and actuator shaft pass through the sugar scoops to keep sea water out of the compartments. If not, are you going to install bilge pumps to keep compartments dry? Keep up the great work! You guys are almost done! Charles
Before I commit to bellows I would like to see how they perform. I made them to handle a following sea containing any blue water to just the compartments and built them to be self-draining with a 1" pitch for every 12".
Teal. I'm sure you have thought about this but its worth asking anyway. If your rudders do hit something then the rudder cassettes are going to swivel upwards and rip those 'through bolts' out of your hull. Is the compartment around this area water tight? and do you have a way to pump the compartment if shit happens?
As always nice job. Dont you ever get angry? With all theese projects, it goes not always as you want, but you never say that word.... In Sweden its also spring and some days ago I get my little motoryacht in the water. So now we wat for warmer weather.
There are moments of frustration, but nothing worth getting angry about. When you're frustrated, you can think through your problem and find a solution. You can't do that with anger. 😉
Is Teal OCD much? Very methodical and precision oriented. Much to admire. But hopefully not chronic? Do you ever have to go back to the boat when you just get in the car - to check things?
Hi Mark, you can buy it on amazon. We have been curating a storefront letting you guys know what we have been using on basik. Here's the link. www.amazon.com/shop/onboardlifestyle Hope that helps!
Just a question Teal , when you put those struts in , what is going to stop the water when it catches up to the back of your boat from flooding the sugar scoop ????
I designed and built those compartments to handle blue water. They are watertight and isolated from the sugar scoops with a steep pitch to self drain quickly.
I think you will run into trouble, mounting the hydraulic cylinder in this way because of the non linear movement of the linkage. The ball mount of the cylinder can only handle the angle of ONE rudder. The cylinder must not mounted between the linkage.
I do not like starboard for spacers or backing. It is too soft and will create give. Once you have give the bolts will loosen and everything starts to move. I have tried using starboard like that and it was a bust each time. You will have a lot of stress for a long time. A lot of cycles. Of course I may be wrong. It happened once. :) BTW You do good work.
PS. That hydraulic fill tube fitting you put on top of the salon may not be the best location. Due to being exposed to the salt water. You easily could make a bracket to attach the fill tube inside the steering column. And then install those screw hole hatches to make a better closure into the kitchen not a clock plate. Please don’t rush just because you’re getting close to the end.
Teal, I was curious if you are going to have a redundant steering scenario in case something fails while at sea? From conversation I think most agree the steering is most crucial for needing a back up, do you agree? BTW love the channel. Thanks!
That is one of the advantages of having a tie bar connecting the two rudders rather than independent cylinders for each. I have a sleeve running through the tie bar with an eye bolt on the centerline. I installed a U-bolt on either side (about 8' from the center) and can easily deploy a block and tackle on each side to control the rudders manually.
@@OnboardLifestyle Cool, from watching all your videos I respect your knowledge. I like the details and learn a lot from the channel. Cant wait for the new episodes every Friday!
I am curious why you chose not to use anti-compression bushings and backing plates to spread the load when you mounted the bushings for the jackshafts for the rudders and other thru bolt applications. Nida-core may serve quite well as a coring material, but I would worry about its susceptibility to localized compression loading, especially when subjected to continuous multidimensional stresses found in steering gear. With off shore cruising, your rudders and linkage will never be unloaded and will be continuously subjected to shock loads.
You are spot on Robert. When I made the video I put very light hardware in to make sure everything was in the correct location just in case I had to move it slightly for alignment. I wanted to finish the hydraulics and test the motion first before putting the permanent hardware in. I have increased the through bolt size and doubled the quantity along with 6" backer plates for the jackshaft bushings. I will cover that in a future video.
If you watch episode 36, we cover that topic. So far, we are very happy with our clearance. She handles beautifully on the water. Thanks for watching and following!
Hello Teal A question on your hydraulic ram will you be using TWO? I think Two would be better then one ? the one Rudder System would have more stress on it in turning. But two hydraulic ram could be better and may turn better. I'm just asking because you are going to have long rod going across the boat to the other Rudder. Just my thinking, But it is cool how you have a great Wife that works with you on your Dream Sailboat. Do you know how many men would die for that? Also a great little help she will be a great Capt. Some Day. GOD BLESS and take care.
Wasn’t there some designers and engineers who put that sailboat together with the proper specifications to where the ram goes. So it’s pretty basic if you follow the original design specifications
The answer to that is complicated. Our boat has been modified multiple times over her 26 year life moving the steering system and rudders to accommodate three totally different propulsion systems. Cool you visited Sailing Ran.. :-).. see here how small the sailing world is.
Well done ..
nice and clean job again guys......
Absolutely perfect kootchie kootchie koo moment missed at 6:10, Emma I am disappointed in you.... Haul out cannot be far away now Teal.

Ran sailing is one of my favorites. Those guys have a positive, cheery channel like yours. Glad that you guys were able to meet up and fellowship.

I admire your approach to engineering, very calm and well thought out. With the help of an intelligent woman you have it made, good luck from Australia..
Aaaaaaaaah the weekly fix of ‘special colonial cousins’. Won’t be too much longer and the weekly will become an A’s and when! Coming along nicely 👌

Admirable as always. Where you fit retaining pins in the linkage, should they not have an appropriate washer as well ?
Teal where did you get the hole saw for the deck plates? Can't seem to find a 6 1/2" one.
