    You have the nicest looking catamaran I've seen. The inside is not the typical brown, tan, and white like on so many other boats...even mega yachts.

      Thanks Ross! We really went back and forth with keeping the fuel. In the end, the amount we pumped out and recycled vs reusing it discussion made us both realized it wasn't worth possibly running bad fuel through our system. Getting it analyzed and tested would have set us back on our schedule and quite frankly....alot more costly. We are all ready to set sail! 🙌🏻⛵⛵

    I have loved everything you have done so far but today's episode made my jaw drop. One of the smartest craftsmans I have seen on youtube just paid money to dispose of good diesel fuel. I expected to see him make or buy a fuel polishing system and install it. Knowing that fuel is not always clean in other countries I would expect to see such a system as being almost mandatory. I was also surprised that the old diesel was not given away to some other sailor or fisherman that could use it. I wonder if some of the 15 gallons you just bought is your old diesel that had already been through polishing?

    Just a Note.... after watching hundreds of videos over the years it is easy to see you MUST carry extra impeller's for every pump on the vessel... two for the salt water pump in the engine compartment.....just a thought to be safe while sailing the world.

    Ultimate respect - you do great work. But this one was a fail. I think the fuel might have been okay, but understand replacing it to start off "clean". Three points (1) Since you knew that you were going to dump the old fuel, you could have siphoned some out over winter to run in your diesel heaters. (2) Bad idea to run the "old" fuel through your filters... should have hooked pump up in front of Raycor to drain tank - then mounted in final spot. (why potentially clog up filter?) (3) No double hose clamps? You tend to over engineer things (I do too), but you missed the double hose clamps on fuel lines?

    I am truly impressed with your workmanship and level of finish. Truly awesome. But I have to take exception to some of the plumbing work. First, thread compound is never, ever used on flared (metal-to-metal fittings. The Teflon in the threads can inhibit tightening of the fitting and can work its way into the joint, causing a leak. If it were my boat I would take all such fittings apart and reassemble without the tape. Second, on pipe fittings, I'm sure I noticed the tape hanging over the end of the fitting. The tape should never be on the last two threads. Otherwise, it can peel off and get into the system. Finally, in aircraft and automotive systems, Teflon tape is never used because it can peel into the system. Always use only thread compound with Teflon. Lastly, in automotive and aircraft pipe threads are only used as an absolute last resort - they are too prone to leakage. Sorry about the long post, but I couldn't help myself. Can't wait to see you set sail!

    @rowanking2738 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I reckon good decision on discarding the old diesel - the cost of 80 gallons of new fuel will seem insignificant if you end up with engine problems offshore. Question on routing the fuel discharge line though - why did you T off after the primary fual filter? If your fuel is bad rather discard it before clogging your filter, and if you want to check the condition of your fuel, you want the raw fuel before filtering.

    • @brucemacsr.6776
      @brucemacsr.6776 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Right. You don't really need another project added to your list. A new fuel connection, a few trips to the fuel dock and the old fuel problem is done. And you get a good night's sleep some day in the near future that you might not have otherwise had. Not all problems have to be solved. Some you can sail around and just leave in your wake.

    Honestly, I wouldn't have been afraid of 9 year old fuel that looked that good, especially after I essentially filtered it thru my Racors first. You kinda used up some of the life of your Racors filtering fuel you were going to toss. Wasteful, IMO, but it's your money and time. Diesel doesn't go "sour" like gasoline, though it can get water, algae and contaminants.... and you filtered all that out with the Racor. Wish I was closer! I'd have taken that fuel off you hands and used in my farm tractors this season. And they would have been very happy with it.

    Hello Basik Crew,
    The only question I have is why did you not use this fuel for the Diesel Heating system in the boat? Sorry for being an armchair quarterback, I would hate to do something on You Tube, and then receive hundreds of comments of how they would've done it. Everyone knows at least ten ways to do something or more. Times a waiting.

  • @glenpeters955

    As always great job Teal, now a couple of questions.
    I notice that have no caps on your hose clamps is there a reason for this
    I also noticed that you only have one clamp on the fuel lines, I thought it was general practice to use two clamps on fuel and high pressure lines.
    Last one - and this is just a bit of info, I have been watching another couple on youtube that I think you would REALLY appreciate, they are called Salt & Tar and they are building their timber yacht from a plan using very traditional methods. I think you would appreciate the task they have undertaken and the quality of the work they have done so far. Anyway check them out if you get a chance.
    As always stay safe and look after those women of yours. Cheers.

    One more question Teal - sorry
    All decent trawlers seem to use a fuel or have onboard a fuel polishing system to clean up bad diesel that is supplied in some out of the way places, are you intending on installing a fuel polishing system on SV Basik in addition to the filtering you already have ??
    Thanks Teal.

    • @gregsnewyt
      @gregsnewyt 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Glen Peters Exactly my question. See a lot of blue water sailors experiencing engine problems due to contaminated fuel acquired in very remote locations. Only SV Starry Horizons has a fuel polishing system that they talk about. The boat owners operate a commercial fleet and thus seem to equip to a higher standard. They have sailed from the US to Indonesia over the past 3 years with no issues. Seems like a good investment.

    • @jackpatteeuw9244
      @jackpatteeuw9244 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Old diesel can get mold/algae, but if it was treated when it went in the tanks and the tanks were full (very little air/moisture) it was probably not an issue. I know I would figure out a way of using that fuel, after additional filtering, if there was nothing in the water separator bowl !
      Racor makes a "fuel polishing" system which includes a pump and filter to be used when transferring fuel between tanks. These are pretty expensive. With the 2 small transfer pumps, if they added an extra filter, say 10 micron, with quick connects, they would have almost the same system at a fraction of the price.
      If they are really "paranoid" about old fuel, after emptying the tank, I would steam clean them to make sure to kill any mold/algae.

      @@linhgobenyt definitely a personal preference for the type of fuse but I am concerned about a safety issue with that fuse block. The wires feeding the block appear to be a similar gauge (relatively small) to the wires going to the various appliances. The wire feeding the fuse block needs to be able to handle the current of all the appliances running at the same time. Considering that it probably comes from the batteries to the electrical panel and then to the fuse block there is a long distance to consider as well, (I love that Blue sea circuit wizard app!) Please take a look at that, and I also noticed on the new lithium battery installation he has the master fuse in the wrong location. Perfection is Paramount when dealing with marine wiring. I just found your channel and have been so impressed with everything you have done so meticulously I would hate to see something bad happen due to a simple miscalculation or placement of safety devices. Good luck and thank you for the wonderful videos, you are truly blessed 😊.

    Paying to get rid of the fuel as opposed to getting a dollar and a half a gallon on Craigslist? All you would of had to do is run the fuel through a fuel polisher. You will buy fuel in remote places that you will absolutely need a fuel polisher before running it. People use old french fry grease in their diesel pickups. A fuel polisher will cost you less than 80 gallons of fuel.

    A bit late to this party, but if you ever need to do this again don't waste the fuel I work at a facility and we store million+ gallons and it's never tested bad and you put in additive also. We've had fuel on-site for 25 years and they test it yearly zero issues we don't cycle through it that quickly either maybe 100,00 gallons since I started here.

    I'm sorry to say that, but this is not a good installation. First, these squeeze bulbs do not meet the standards needed for below deck installations and they are not made for diesel. Then, the pumps you installed are not good for this application because they are not self-priming. Also, they are known for being very unreliable. A MUCH better way of doing this would have been to:
    -Throw out the primer bulbs
    -put in a car diesel pump (they can be had cheap and are very reliable), these are self-priming
    -put it in directly behind the filter but before the outlet valves
    By doing this, the electric pump can be used to prime the engine after a filter change, and it can also be used if the mechanical fuel pump on the engine fails. Also, when routing the second outlet back to the tank this can be used as a fuel polishing system. Another possibility is to add a second inlet, this allows to pump fresh diesel from jerrycans through the racor into the tank.

      TXG....90% of this is better for sure, but consider an emergency loss of power in all this, and your still stuck. I for one have had to pump the primer bulb to get back to the dock. Actually the wife squeezed for an hour, I drove the boat. If your alive n on the boat, a primer bulb will get it running n keep it running till you can address it further and its a safety/ redundancy factor to consider in the plan. Great additional thought though, and well thought out for sure. Most Yanmar do have a manual pump handle on the fuel pump to prime the system. Either way worth considering at some point Teal, but lets stay focused to get this thing sailing ASAP.

      @@jim28fl I get the point, but this is not a likely problem on this catamaran. At first, as far as i know there is no way to start these Yanmars by hand, so if there is no power there is no way to start the engine anyways. Secondly, the electric pump would be in series with the mechanical lift pump. So, if electric power fails while the engine is already running, it will keep on running because the mechanical pump on the engine will still suck diesel through the non-running electric pump. And besides all that, on a catamaran there is always the second engine to get back to the dock :)

    I mean how much other stuff is there still to do regarding the mast and ropes????

    A submersible pump relies on the liquid to cool it. Are you sure it won’t overheat?

      The pump we used was designed for either submersible or inline applications.

    Nothing wrong with that diesel ! I can’t believe how stupid a smart guy can be when it comes to diesel !!! That diesel looked crystal clear. Not even a shadow of algae in that fuel. I don’t know why you donated 80 gallons back to the guy who’s going to sell it back to you at the current price. You even filtered the whole 80 gallons of fuel which I guarantee that’s 100% better than what you’ll be buying back from them. Maybe your “fresh diesel” will be way dirtier and even may contain water and algae. I’ve bought plenty of crappy diesel over the years and it was so “fresh” that it was hot just delivered from the refinery. Selling hot diesel is another way these fuel station scumbags are cheating the people.
    Dude, you’re very smart and a highly skilled individual, but what you did with that diesel was very stupid to say the least !!!!
