Hey, just Subbed! Tip: Brushing Bees... Turn Frame upside down, Brush Bees off. Why you ask ? That's our average daily Summer Temperatures almost ! My Bees fly in10C (55F.) 🙃 They are Native Black Bees and are as hard as Nails ! Need to be so with Cold Winds, lots of Rain etc. But they do great even if it isn't like N.C. 😎
Did my first serious attempt at making queens and splits last year. Out of 16 nucs, 12 took off and are still alive as of this post, bringing my total number of hives to 15. I will probably buy queens for genetic variety, but for the most part its "buy your gear, build your bees" :)
Enjoying this process you are doing . I had a colony last season about like your problem hive I put frames of eggs an larva four times an in the fifth time they got it going. I was mostly just playing with it but after turned out that colony really did a great job thru the season . I keep forgetting to ask you what kind of bees do you run ??? . I have been going into all my colonies to see just how they are doing. I may have to start adding boxes on a few of them . I am not really wanting to add to many more colonies to my operation. Looking forward to the rest of your videos. Thanks

PS : Question : Saw you turn the Frame Upside Down 'to Graft from'. Does this make Larvae transfer (process) easier ? Many YT Vids on Grafting have Frame regular way up... 👀 Want to increase my Skill set and "Graft" some Queens, this year, in May*, over Walk Away Splits. *Here in Scotland 🏴 Drones are definitely Mature by May ! We still get cold wet weather even as late as end of April. Yikes. Boys in Kilts need warm days ! 😉
is there an advantage to putting the queen right side of the hive on top vs bottom? I would have expected that you would have put the new cells in the top box where the heat ends up. I split 9 to 17 last year just using the double screen board, hoping to begin the grafting process this year and get to 30 to 50 colonies if it goes good.
No real advantage for a small amount of cells. We used the lower box as a starter/finisher since we only needed 5. There were enough bees in each box to keep the brood and cells warm. Typically we would reverse them if we were using the colony as a starter/finisher.
Yes I believe they will accept the grafted cells even though you didn't wait 24 hours. They will realize they are queenless really quick and when they do, the cells are in there and ready.
I see US base 'Barnyard Bees' does this too. Must be a warm State thing. Might give it a go here across the Pond (!) Most folk, do wait the 24hrs. I see an experiment trial come May. Fingers crossed. 🤞
There is something going on with the hive not raising a queen. Perhaps a virgin is running around? If not, I would combine them before splitting to get them straightened out. Then split and add a qc.

Enterance Info : Lower Medium White Box has full Wide Entrance (Front) on that Hive Floor. Upper Deep Blue Box has a faux floor : "Double Screened Board with a Little Notch cut out Entrance at Back Right. This is an additional Entrance but for top Box use only !" By confusing the Foragers to go into the smaller Brood, it gets more 'population', until they make a Queen Cell. Get a Queen of their own, as she lays up new population ! Screen Board stops the Bees 'passing the Phremones by touch' aka Bee feet can't cross that gap between the Ceiling of lower Box, and, faux floor of that upper Box. That Board has Mesh, a Gap, more Mesh. If no QMP, Bees on side with no Queen, but have "x2 day Larvae" added : they start to make their own "new Queen(s) depending how many Graft Cups, or Notched Wax Cells, the Beek uses, or makes. Haven't bought bees in 8 years. Went from 8 hives to 20 in 2 years.

It helps me to graft easier without harming the larvae. But others keep the frame upright. Really just what suits you best

We have drones walking on the frames. So we hope we will be ok. May have to repeat the process again, but I think we will be ok.

The double screen board has an entrance on the back of the colony. It is open the whole time sorry I wasn't more clear on that.
