  • Welcome to part 11 of the stop buying bees series. In this video, We demonstrate you can indeed stop buying bees and become self sustainable as a beekeeper even if you are new. We started with two colonies coming out of the winter. One of the had a drone laying queen and was destined to be a deadout. We worked the bees and the drone laying colony and manipulated it in certain ways that increased its chance of survival. We then reared our own queens from the survivor colony, made splits, introduced cells and today we show you our increase success. We went from technically ONE viable colony to four. We brought you along on the whole adventure. Splitting and growing bees does not have to be difficult or only for the professionals. If you understand a little bee biology and give it a shot you can also be successful. Learning to raise good queens, make colony splits and grow your operation yourself to save money and keep yourself in business. ‪@MikeBarryBees‬ ‪@brucesbees‬ ‪@BeekeepingWithNatalee‬ ‪@TheCaliforniaBeekeeper‬ ‪@TheHoneystead‬ ‪@CastleHives‬ ‪@NaturesImageFarmGregBurns‬

    Craig good job and good video! Looks like you turned that problem hive into the start of a good strong young hive.

    Thanks for your video because you feed them and they don't rob the other colonies

    Watching this on lunch break with headphones in. When the bees got in the mic I wanted to swat at my ears. 😂😂😂

    My colonies are busting at the seams. I built a double screen board using yours for a pattern and hope to do my first grafts this week. The weather in PA if finally starting to turn warmer and I saw a few drones walking around on the comb. Looks like the season is about to start for us. Thanks for doing this series on growing your numbers. It's exactly what I needed to see at just the right time. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the 32 hives are all doing good this fall for you.

    I had to buy bees, they all died over winter. I don't like winter anymore and I blame beekeeping. YAY fresh start season 2.🤪

      @@thesidelinebeekeeper-craig6924 No reason to give up I learnt to much to quit. Ordered 5 colonies and 2 nucs to get back on track and build off of. So your series is great refresher information for me. Ty much.👍

    On my area, if they are storing pollen and nectar in the frames they probably don't need supplementing any more.

      @thesidelinebeekeeper-craig6924  ปีที่แล้ว

      Here they are storing some but not much of a variety. Plus we will be pushing these bees pretty hard. We will probably be feeding and using supplement all season for the series. Our production colonies may get one more round depending on weather, but hopefully we are finished with them. Stuff is too expensive to just use lol

    Like USB connectors, you always put those feeder spacers the wrong way up. Maybe paint the bottom a different color…

    Hey Craig. You should really gain some momentum now. Will you split again in 3 weeks or so?

    • @thesidelinebeekeeper-craig6924
      @thesidelinebeekeeper-craig6924  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes we will! As soon as they have enough brood and bees we will split the 4 again and make 8 hopefully.

    Craig, do you make your own Pattie’s or buy them? If you buy, which brand do you like? I’m in sc about an hour plus from you and the pollen sources have been weird.

    • @thesidelinebeekeeper-craig6924
      @thesidelinebeekeeper-craig6924  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Amanda! We use Mann Lake Ultra Bee! It works well and the bees consume it well. We have tried several different brands etc, but Ultra Bee is our favorite. We have made our own and still do at times. But the patties I used in the video are purchased. You can get them from Mann Lake or Amazon. I agree! We don’t have a diversity of pollen yet either! Thanks for watching.

      @@thesidelinebeekeeper-craig6924 I use their ultra bee in the feeder year round close to hives.
