    What is YOUR favourite product for doing rust streaks?

      I like how the Mission still had darker stains where it was first put on. Good gradient that I think sticks out the most.

      No weathering powders?
      They are basically soft pastel... not oil pastels ground up and you can apply as a dust or add to mediums... Vallejo makes a premade line and you can do several techniques with them

      I almost never use enamel paints, but for some reason I'm very partial to the rust colored Testor's enamel paint. The slight contrast between the matte acrylics and the almost shinier enamel works to your advantage here, and it's a very nice shade.

      I use Citadel Technical paints...for a metal rust, I start with a base of Leadbelcher, or other silver base paint, then I dab Citadel Technical Typhus Corrosion over the silver areas. It has a texture to it. Then I go over it sparingly with their Technical Ryza Rust. If you want it to look like oxidized bronze, instead of the Ryza Rust use Nihilakh Oxide. They make some great effects. I have also used Tamiya weathering pigments, they have a couple sets with rust effects available. A friend of mine builds dioramas and uses cinnamon as a rust effect and texture and the color is pretty close.

      @@mayadawnfisher3222 I use the same technik but inbetween the Typhus Corrosion and the ryza rust i drybrush the hole rust with verminlord hide to make it much more natural.

    I've used the Army Painter rust effects paint on some goblin minis to make their weapons look a little more worn. Using a stiple technique with a stiff or beat up brush works really well at creating more natural looking rust spots. Awesome video, thanks for taking the time to share all this great info.

    For what it's worth, the dry pigments work best by brushing the dry pigment on your surface where you want the rust streaks to be, then streaking it with the fixer.

    You know about classic GW way to make rust? Typhus Corrosion on base colour + dry brush by Ryza Rust. But I understand, for terrain you need more paint not like on miniatures. In my opinion working with rust effect it is a lot of practice with mixing colour from yellow to red and with a little bit darker colours to find something what you need.

    The Vallejo one you used was meant not for rust. It was for engine grime, gunk and spills. I model tanks as well as mini's and this is just one of a number various engine effects that can be used. There is one specially for rust effects that is just awesome! It even gives the texture too!

    Best stuff I’ve found is AK-interactive “Rust Streak”.....it is an enamel based product....simply drag it down from the source of the rust. (Eg. bolt head, seam or rivet). Don’t worry about trying to blend out the edges. It will look like crap at this point.
    Wait for about 60min to 120min, then begin to feather the edges with White Spirit. This will then start to blend out the edges. (Remember that because it is enamel, it will stay workable for hours).
    I think the Spirit also breaks the edge tension and really feathers out the medium.

    Hey Jeremy! Big fan of the show, its inspired me to keep making awesome terrain.
    I can highly recommend "Dirty Down" Rust. Its a one pot wonder for rust. It can give texture, bubbling effects, and streaks if you use it in different ways. They also make a fantastic Verdigris for corroded brass/copper. I've bought around 10 different rust effect paints so far, but I always tend to go back to the "Dirty Down" Rust.

    Interesting concept that I didn’t really know I needed until this video! I imagine that the rust would also be good for also just adding some variety to the grungy aesthetic to something like a mine or deep dungeon. I’ll have to save this for later when my players get to the sewers in my (modern setting) campaign...

  • @TheKrakenfist
    @TheKrakenfist 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you happen to have some Skrag Brown from the Citadel range lying around to try? It's a pretty popular color for doing rust with regular paint. Also, I haven't tried this yet, but I suspect purposefully letting the pigment separate from the binder in regular paints (by watering it down too much or just letting it sit in a wet palette to separate) could be useful for doing grainier rust effects, like maybe around nuts and bolts that are rusted over.

    Favorite technique: Take a tiny amount of Burnt Umber, tap your brush on the rusted area, and then sprinkle a tiny bit of ground cinnamon on the center of the paint dab. Do not grind your own cinnamon, buy the orangish commercial stuff. The paint will be enough to glue the cinnamon in place, and will blend itself.

    The rust effect that inspires me is from the KamuiCosplay channel: "For the rusting effect we bought iron powder from eBay and hydrogen peroxide (3%) form the local pharmacy. Again, it's 1 part salt, 4 parts vinegar and 6 parts peroxide (by volume)." - She uses PVA glue to apply the iron oxide powder, then sprays on the mixture of salt, vinegar and peroxide, then dabs on straight peroxide. Once it is dry, she seals it with matte finish. - - - I can see this being used for terrain, but it may be too cumbersome for miniatures.

    Never tried this, but it might be an option to test. But I watched video awhile back where they used a bit of steel wool in a bottle with some white vinegar to make rust. When done the left over vinegar then was a rusty color and could be painted on a surface. The guy doing it was painting it on Hot Wheels cars for the Gaslands game. And they came out with a thick rust texture. However, if you ran it through some sort of filter(maybe a coffee filter?) you might get it down to just a fine pigment and vinegar mixture. But then the question is, do you want vinegar or it's smell on your work? I'll see if I can find a link to the video to drop here.

    • @BlackMagicCraftOfficial
      @BlackMagicCraftOfficial  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most likely! As long as they are pigment rich and can be heavily thinned. That’s essentially what miniature paints are, high quality artist acrylics with high pigment density so the can be thinned a LOT. Acrylic craft paints for example are not a great option.

    How about actual red iron oxide with the fixer? Might need a tiny bit of black oxide to get the colour looking right since both get produced. Either way it would be actual rust and they are very cheap.

  • @earthmanbrick
    @earthmanbrick 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Best one, fastest & most cost effective is to buy cheap acrylic (the cheaper the better) tube paints of burnt umber & burnt sienna. Apply liberally & watch as the high translucency (due to it being cheap) causes it to fade into an excellent rust layer. Apply multiple layers for greater effects
    Honestly, this is the best effect I've come up with for terrain. It's not suitable for miniatures, for those you'll want to stick with chipping or inks washes.
    If you want the most realistic effects (& have a decent budget & plenty of time) then use oil paints & smear them using iso propanol/white spirits. Rich Builds dot com has a great highly detailed tutorial on it with his builds
