They freaking killed that live! Honestly, I was kind of bummed you were doing a live version. And not just a live version, but one that was done 30 something years after they recorded it originally. I expected a version that was a shadow of the original. I was not expecting this. They knocked it way out of the park. They can still sing! What a brilliantly polished live act. That is such a great display of talent with undoubtedly many thousands of hours of polishing their craft and art.

Big boys don't cry was recoded during the studio recording. Kathy Redfern was the secretary at the Strawberry Studios. She came out to tell Eric Stewart he had a phone call. They just asked her and she obliged.

This takes me back to being a teenager. Loved this song at the time but because there was so much good music around in the 70's I didnt properly appreciate how good they truly were. Their harmonies and instrumentals are spot on. Thank you for taking me back to some very happy memories x

One hot summer’s day in 1974, I was sitting with my back against a tree in the Winter Gardens in Bournemouth. I was 17 years old, and waiting to catch a train to leave home and join The Household Cavalry. Leaning on the same tree next to me was a hippy kind of guy with a guitar, strumming some great chords,,, lots of cool key changes. We got talking, he introduced himself as Graham Gouldman, and I told him that I loved the sound that he was getting out of a simple acoustic guitar. He told me that he was working up a melody for a lyric that his friend had penned. I listened some more, then caught my train. The following year, I heard the finished article, I’m Not in Love storm up the charts. How lucky was I to experience the song in its conception, and what a memory. The name 10cc, by the way, had no sexual connotations... it simply came to Jonathan King in a dream. Boring eh! He thought saying it constantly would make it meaningless, so put a twist on it by saying i'm not in love , but really meaning our relationship means everything to me. I think maybe you might try listening to it again with this in mind now & see if your oppinion changes.

I was there in Swansea, it was a fantastic night, first part of the show featured Graham's acoustic session. Seen them on numerous occasions, most memorable was Cardiff 1993, where Eric was on fantastic form and very humorous!!!
Of all the songs that have ever moved me, I think this one is the ONE. The writers/composers so perfectly captured a such feeling of bittersweet. This song makes me cry tears of sadness and joy at the same time.

What is amazing about this performance is how close it is to the studio recording. Except for a few things here and there you would swear they were lip-syncing to it. His voice still sounds great after all these years.

This incredibly diverse Band split into 2 pairs: 1/ Godley and Creme 2/ Stewart and Gouldman but I think only Graham Gouldman is here in the middle. Stewart spent three weeks recording Gouldman, Godley, and Creme singing "ahhh" 16 times for each note of the chromatic scale, creating a 'choir' of 48 voices for each note.Creme suggested they could keep the voices going for an infinite time by using tape loops. Stewart created 12 ft long loops by feeding them at one end through the tape heads of the stereo recorder, and at the other end through a capstan roller fixed to the top of a microphone stand.. YOU MUST HEAR THE STUDIO VERSION RR :)

This song actually changed the music production world back in 75! Those vocals you hear in the back is a synth trick they developed back there where the lead singer guy (don't know his name) recorded himself doing every note and programming it to the mixing table (it took him two weeks to do that), so this song is whole experimentation and the original version features almost exclusively his voice trick. The lyric is a joke to his wife that used to say he never said he loves her, a "love you" denial haha.

Today we have voice pads on keyboards, and really quality ones, but having to make it analogically adds to the experiment, IMO. Just as when Phil Collins recorded in the air tonight, that drums midsong has a developed effect, a rig the producer had to make.

The studio version is so epic that I feared this being a live version, but was pleasantly surprised at this performance. I love how quickly you picked up on the denial of lyrics :). I always interpreted it as not so much breaking up, but him avoiding getting into a serious relationship in the first place by kidding himself that he's 'not in love'.
I’ve always loved this song. What they did for the “going to space” thing was pretty flippin’ complicated. I was watching a doc with some of the Engineers and Producer. BTW… the “Big boys don’t cry” section was spoken into a single track, then mixed in afterward. It was “performed” by one of the Administrative Assistants. PS. I think you’re great. You bring something to this type of platform that others simply don’t… or can’t. I don’t know exactly what it is, but it’s an sense of optimistic freshness. Openness and honesty. First time I heard the Aaaaaahs from a synth, when this came out, since then every synth I own has pretty much that sound bank in it, Still gives me the creeps and goosebumps on my arms. When I use this for an arrangement, it's like heaven opens, if you use it on a subtle way, like 10cc did.

I was in my 20s when this came out I just got out of the Navy and I met a girl who I liked but I was still processing getting out of the service and Vietnam love was hard to feel, I felt more alone in a world I didn't understand so we parted, but this song really spoke to me
An outstanding live version....a lot of people don't realize that this song was originally intended to be totally acapella! The band, in the studio, used synths and tape loops to record thousands of samples of their voices in different keys and scale, and then layered them to replace the instruments. The bass and keyboards were only used to set up the rhythm in the early demos....and they loved they way they sounded, so they left them in...
And to think this was live over 30 years after the first release in the 70s and they can still hold the long note through the whole song... It's amazing

I was dreading hearing the live version - I loved this when I was a little girl - but it's fantastic.

Rhodes keys is the sound of the 70s. Love it. The most mellow sound Rick bass ever. Usually it's more like the Chris Squire sound.

This incredibly diverse Band split into 2 pairs: 1/ Godley and Creme 2/ Stewart and Gouldman but I think only Graham Gouldman is here in the middle. Stewart spent three weeks recording Gouldman, Godley, and Creme singing "ahhh" 16 times for each note of the chromatic scale, creating a 'choir' of 48 voices for each note.Creme suggested they could keep the voices going for an infinite time by using tape loops. Stewart created 12 ft long loops by feeding them at one end through the tape heads of the stereo recorder, and at the other end through a capstan roller fixed to the top of a microphone stand.. YOU MUST HEAR THE STUDIO VERSION RR :)
Good discovery for you. I got introduced to the band in 1982, whilst in England at Uni. Been hooked on that tune ever since. Memories of love lost via a letter after a year absence. True story...enjoy. ..

This song actually changed the music production world back in 75! Those vocals you hear in the back is a synth trick they developed back there where the lead singer guy (don't know his name) recorded himself doing every note and programming it to the mixing table (it took him two weeks to do that), so this song is whole experimentation and the original version features almost exclusively his voice trick. The lyric is a joke to his wife that used to say he never said he loves her, a "love you" denial haha.
Imagine how'd they do that compared to this time all in digital
@@tootsbasa5874 I think the awesomeness of this song is in part of the non existent tech to do what they wanted. Today we have voice pads on keyboards, and really quality ones, but having to make it analogically adds to the experiment, IMO. Just as when Phil Collins recorded in the air tonight, that drums midsong has a developed effect, a rig the producer had to make.
Eric Stuart was the singer, though that wasn't him in this video, the only original member is the bass player Graham Gouldman

The studio version is so epic that I feared this being a live version, but was pleasantly surprised at this performance. I love how quickly you picked up on the denial of lyrics :). I always interpreted it as not so much breaking up, but him avoiding getting into a serious relationship in the first place by kidding himself that he's 'not in love'.

I’ve always loved this song. What they did for the “going to space” thing was pretty flippin’ complicated. I was watching a doc with some of the Engineers and Producer. BTW… the “Big boys don’t cry” section was spoken into a single track, then mixed in afterward. It was “performed” by one of the Administrative Assistants. PS. I think you’re great. You bring something to this type of platform that others simply don’t… or can’t. I don’t know exactly what it is, but it’s an sense of optimistic freshness. Openness and honesty. I was 8 when this song came out, listening to it now at 54 it's hard to describe why I'm feeling the emotions that I feel when I listen to this song, why does it bring me to tears the first couple of notes?

I love this song. A great flashback from my high school days. Great memories !!! You should watch this song when they're in the studio recording. Of course, they much younger.
First time I heard the Aaaaaahs from a synth, when this came out, since then every synth I own has pretty much that sound bank in it, Still gives me the creeps and goosebumps on my arms. When I use this for an arrangement, it's like heaven opens, if you use it on a subtle way, like 10cc did.

Always loved this tune. It was quite unique when it was released. In a special kind of way. And still is for me.
I was in my 20s when this came out I just got out of the Navy and I met a girl who I liked but I was still processing getting out of the service and Vietnam love was hard to feel, I felt more alone in a world I didn't understand so we parted, but this song really spoke to me
An outstanding live version....a lot of people don't realize that this song was originally intended to be totally acapella! The band, in the studio, used synths and tape loops to record thousands of samples of their voices in different keys and scale, and then layered them to replace the instruments.
The bass and keyboards were only used to set up the rhythm in the early demos....and they loved they way they sounded, so they left them in...
And to think this was live over 30 years after the first release in the 70s and they can still hold the long note through the whole song... It's amazing
They also had a great hit titled "The Things We Do For Love."
One of those multi talented bands of the mid 70s.. everyone in the band played all the instruments and sang as well...saw them at the old Santa Monica civic auditorium...cool band to see live
