He's very much in love. Head over heels. He's just trying to deny it. That song has a really interesting story. They did tons of recording of the group's voices and mixed them to create that "airy" sound. Oh, and the woman's voice saying "big boys don't cry" was actually the record company's secretary.
You could not be more right! Many people, including our lovely hosts, misinterpret it based on the outward appearance of the lyrics. Yes, the guy is so in love but too proud to admit it! And the sound is divine. Thanks!
I'm surprised S&M didn't talk more about those dreamy multi-layered voices -- that was a totally different sound on the charts back in that great summer of 1975. It inspired Billy Joel to include a similar layering of voices on his big hit "Just the Way You Are."
Eric Stewart (the singer) wrote this "Tongue in Cheek" song in response to his wife's constantly telling him that he didn't tell her that he loved her enough times.....In reality, he loved her very much. The band searched high and low looking for the perfect voice to say the words "Big Boys Don't Cry" when their secretary/telephonist/tea maker etc. popped her head around the door while they were recording this, to tell them that they'd got a phone call and they all instantly knew that her voice was the exact voice that they were looking for. Eric and his wife are still married after more than 50 years......but it won't last..."It's Just a Silly Phase He's Going Through!"
They nearly binned the song because it wasn't working out. The secretary Kathy Redfern who voiced the big boys don't cry part, asked them what happened to that Not in Love song they were working on, she really liked it. So they went back to the song and added all the Moog synthesizer effects, and the song really worked. Check out ''Kathy Redfern, Strawberry Recording Studios'' if you want to see the face behind the voice.
Actually he’s in major denial- he’s definitely in love- keeps her picture on the wall to hide a nasty stain- tells her not to ask for it back- yeah, definitely all denial- Give it another listen to the lyrics.. you’ll see. 💜💙
Agreed. I'll be honest though, for the first 30 years of my life I thought the same thing. Once I really developed a passion for lyrics and I truly listened, I realized how wrong I was xxx
The lyrics sound like someone doing a bad job of insisting he's not in love. True. However, the story of the song has been told many times. His wife asked him why he didn't say he loved her more often and he said things like that lose their meaning when you say them all the time. So, he decided to go the other way in the song. It was a humorous response to his wife's comment, and all underscored by his genuine, and totally non denied love for his wife.
@@badplay156 I'm sorry but that makes no sense. Yes, the guy in the song IS in love. However, judging by the lyrics, it sounds like the other person is definitely into him to. 'Don't tell your friends about the two of us'; 'don't get me wrong, don't think you've got it made'. Why would she think she'd got it made if she didn't like him too? The most convincing reading is that it's an immature response to a romantic relationship - he's trying to be too cool by denying he feels the same way as the other person. The idea that she has rejected him just isn't supported by the lyrics. And, as I've said repeatedly, we KNOW it's about his immature belief that telling his wife he loved her too often would diminish the meaning.
As a teen when this song came out I could not get enough of it...47 years later and it still sounds as beautiful as the first time hearing it in the summer of 75.

How can you have missed the entire point of the lyrics of this song?! 🤣 He is _head over heels_ in love. The song is about self-preservation and vulnerability.
When my older cousins introduced me to the local rock radio station this was one of the first songs I really liked...and kept listening to hear more. At the time I thought he was being brutally honest too...now I realize he was just in denial! 😊
This is about a man who is in love and denying it, he keeps her picture and telling her dont ask to give it back then tells her to wait a long time for him. This is clearly a man in love and trying to convince himself he is not. He is trying to tell her dont love her and she knows he does and we can all hear he does , listen to the song, we caught that when it came out , i caught it as a Kid. it was him trying to deny he loved her and convince himself I loved this song and how it sounded , great song
This song has been my favorite song for more than 40 years. Your reaction just supports how I feel about this song by 10cc. Thank you. I'm Not In Love. 🥰
Shawn & Mel, their "The Things We Do For Love" and "Dreadlock Holiday" are next for you!! This song is an analog production masterpiece, with dozens and dozens of taped vocals for that sound your hearing. TH-cam has a video - The Making of 10cc's "I'm Not in Love" .
Its the background singing of...big boys dont cry. that gives it away. But u have to listen intently to hear it. Its what we go thru in a breakup. The pains done alone.
Yes a great sound. I remember this song very well. It was 1975, and I was a 19 yr old United States Marine on Okinawa. So many memories, then I received the dreaded Dear John Letter. She said, "I'm not in Love." Broke my heart.
Have a listen to their album "Original Soundtrack", the first cut is a trilogy starting with "Une nuit a Paris" (Part 1 - One Night in Paris, Part 2 - The Same Night in Paris, Part 3 - Later That Same Night in Paris). Just a great album
I love listening to music with the two of you. There is nothing more open between two people then sharing lyrics. I've been married 35 years and I think the two of you will last as long as my husband and I have.
So many don't get the message here. He says right at the beginning that he's going through a funny phase, but the fact is he IS in love, but fears the commitment of going forward.
I know who I am in love with, you guys! Another brilliant, genuine reaction! I like the look of shock on your faces. I remember when this song was released. And I still love this song too. A pop/rock classic. 10cc made many great songs.
The three most common kinds you'll find in literature classrooms are verbal irony, dramatic irony, and situational irony. Verbal irony occurs whenever a speaker tells us something that differs from what they mean, what they intend, or what the situation requires.
One of my all time favorite songs. The way the produced this song back then was ground breaking, and there are a few short (15 min, or so) documentaries about it. Queen and Billy Joel later borrowed this technique for some of their songs. The documentary will also explain what @walshaw mentioned in his comment about the lyrics.
Hi Guys! So nice to see you this Sunday, I was hoping you would be on today. :). You know, I always thought this song meant something different. My take on it was that he really did love the girl, so much that he had to keep himself from crying "big boys don't cry big boys don't cry...". But that he was trying not to let her see how deeply he was hurt by her. So he was pretending that he didn't care about her. The part that made me feel that way was second verse when he said "he had her picture on the wall because it hid a nasty stain that was hiding there" and that he would not give it back. He was making an excuse because he treasured the picture. I don't know what the real meaning was suppose to be, but that is what I have always thought when I listened to the song. Have a great day!
I agree the songs THE THINGS WE DO FOR LOVE and DREADLOCK HOLIDAY are gems. This song did very well on the charts and was another winner from the 70's. This song has a lot of meaning to it and not always favorable but was uniquely done.
This is the CORRECT reaction. For nearly 50 years, this song has always been to me "We're here, we're now, but we're not forever - get used to it" Completely bittersweet
I hope you guys react to Little River Band. They have a rabbit hole of songs to go down. They were a band out of Australia. I think you'd love their soft rock style of music. Start with "Reminiscing", "Cool change", "Lady" and "Take It Easy on Me". Thanks!!
@@aharon59 I just checked out that song, and I don't think I ever heard that one. Apparently it was the band's first number one single in the UK Singles Chart, spending one week at the top in June 1973
When I heard this years ago, I thought what a beautiful sound, but I didn’t understand the coldness of the lyrics. Now, many years later, I finally understand it, because I can hear the lyrics better. And reading about the song, shed a whole new light on my misconception. Once I understood it, what a beautiful song it is indeed.
One of the greatest songs ever written. Originally, it was supposed to be a calypso, but we're convinced that it would be better as a pop/rock song. As so many have pointed out, and you realized at the end,the brother's heart was shattered. Great story telling.
10cc, with their first 4 or 5 albums just nailed it -- they had their own recording studio, so the production is superb. Fascinating group that deserves more attention. 'The Things we Do for Love' was a hit for them, but I also love 'Art for Arts Sake' and 'Don't Hang Up' which got college radio play back in the day. Two members split off, (Creme and Godley) and made a few interesting albums of their own and produced videos for Herbie Hancock and Duran Duran.
@@spinynormanbest6410 I particularly like 'I Pitty Inanimate Objects', where they tried to get a melody by manipulating the tape speed. I have never heard a sound like the ending bizarre choral vocals. As you say, masterful. (Not to mention 'The Party' and 'Snack Attack' which are... interesting.)
I was a young boy when this came out in England. I was in love with a girl in a class below me but she didn't notice. I swooned over this song endlessly.
The greatest English Group, that relatively few people have heard of. lol, Almost every track on every album and every single one was different. HOWEVER, the really Beautiful version is not this short one but the 6-minute version and on that one, you hear the "Choir" . Session musicians would come in and do these painstaking recordings for every instrument of an orchestra, one note at a time so that when they were all played together on a Mellotron it sounded like an orchestra. They then tried it with banks and banks of voices. The whole process took about a week. Three or four of them had to sing every note about 14 times, then put echo on it, which gave it that luxurious, velvety harmonic sound.
I listened to this when it first came out. I absolutely loved this... even today, in my old age (65 yrs old). By the way, the message of this song is, he's trying to convince himself he's not in love, but in fact he is!
if you really want your mind blown check out how this song was recorded its really pioneering in the recording industry so much was learned from this recording✌️
One of my favorite bands. Recorded so many great songs but also did some weird stuff. Try listening to Art For Art"s Sake, Wall Street Shuffle, Good Morning Judge, Life Is A Minestrone, Donna, I'm Mandy Fly Me, The Things We Do For Love and Dreadlock Holiday. Later keyboard player Lol Creme and drummer Kevin Godley left to do Godley & Creme. They had a big hit with Cry. Famous for it's video that uses morphing of faces. 10CC still exist today but only bassist Graham Gouldman from the classic Line Up are still a member
I'm amazed at how in many of these reaction videos, the people reacting just DON'T GET IT. Of course he's in love, that's obvious from the lyrics as a whole, and the fact he's repeatedly denying it, is what the song is all about: It's about how society sees strength in a man if he suppresses his emotions, and sees weaknesses in admitting to them and illustrates how we're brought up to be that way; (the 'big boys don't cry' interlude expresses that perfectly.)
This song helped me through a hard breakup in the 70’s….the haunting sound really carried it. But I WAS in love, but the line” It’s just a silly thing I’m going through” got me to believe it and made it easier so I held on to that line.
Yes, you were right in the end. He’s singing the opposite of what he’s feeling. That’s why this song was so popular when it first came out when I was about 15. These artists were definitely thinking outside the box when they wrote & arranged this song. Their secretary is doing the big boys don’t cry part lol. He’s crazy about this woman & he’s so scared that he’s in denial. This is a genius love song
Shawn and Mel glad you’re back! Love this song. Another song that came out at the same time as this one, was “Holding on to Yesterday” by Ambrosia. I think you guys would enjoy reviewing that one!
Hello, ustedes como pareja son especiales me gusta verlos reaccionando y opinando sobre canciones. This is a masterpiece and you should watch how they came about making it...the sounds and techniques are wat before there time. Basically he loved her...just denial❤🔥
I have friends from Stockport England. And 10cc set up Strawberry studios there. It's now a museum. My friends had me go on Skype and I got to see inside. It was cool to see. Plus they showed me Jimmy Page's house. Robert Plant's. and John Bonham's Grave since they knew I am A Zeppelin fan. They even sent me a book called When Stockport Rocked. Plus numerous pics which I cherish. Thanks for the reaction Shawn and Mel. God Bless.
Hi Shawn&Mel❤️ something strange in europe at the 70s is that this song"i am not in Love" was played last just before they closed a DISCO i never understand why they play 105 happy disco songs about love and the final "i am not in Love" by 10cc i love 10cc and i am sure you 2 gone love 10cc❤️❤️🇸🇪🇺🇲 THX Shawn&Mel for a wonderful reaction on 10cc..i am 62 today and i still wonder why they playing this song last on discodance 🌏👁️
10CC had some amazing singers, all of them were brilliant especially Eric and Lol Creme. Graham Gouldman write lots of hits in the 60's before he became famous with 10cc. They really are a supergroup.
In love and in complete dry! I saw them do this in England when it was released, 1975 (I was 17). Still has the same effect on me to this day. Still my all time favourite. Love your reactions, love your channel.
*This song is somebody who is very much in love.. so much so that he's trying like hell to deny how he feels. He's trying to talk himself out of being in love. We've all been there, it doesn't work lol*
So glad you are Reacting to the original with the main Composer singing. Other Reactors are Reacting to the Touring 10CC version with a different singer. As others say... HE WAS SO IN LOVE. 😂 This was a truly beautiful (multi layered) song as a joke to his wife. 😂 Beautiful melody, with the opposite meaning to how he felt. They had to lay each voice down over, and over (like Queen on Bohemian Rhapsody) to create the choir effect. No fancy technology back then. SUNG over and over. Result.. 😲 🔥 😢 ♥
10cc had two writing teams. Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman (you WILL have heard some of their songs). The other writing team is Godley and Creme. You'll love their video for "Cry" which was pioneering,. Michael Jackson pinched the idea. 😂
I’ve watched many reactions to many songs back from the day and I find it amazing that this generation doesn’t get ‘it’. Many agree that the music is great and they don’t make em like they used to but the meanings are lost. This song is about denial. He IS in love. Without being asked he keeps repeating he’s not in love meaning he is in love.
Kevin Godley and Lol Cream were the pioneers of layering vocals and the female backing singer was the receptionist from the main desk of there studios in Stockport UK. There both from Manchester just around the corner from where I live. There is a documentary on the making of the song.
The line that I remember the most from this song is “big boys don’t cry”. I was a child when this song came out. That line was sampled in another song called “Mr. Jaws”.
I rate 10CC as one of the top 5 British bands of the 70s. 3 outstanding writers and composers in Stewart, Godley and Creme.....the last 2 went on to produce some of the best pop videos ever. This track was the most requested on BBC Radio for several years....which says an awful lot for its power and longevity.
He's very much in love. Head over heels. He's just trying to deny it. That song has a really interesting story. Yessir! Once you let it all sink in, you realize he is swimming in denial. It is such a gentle take on a very real struggle.

Absolutely love this song, always have, always will… I love your guys reactions! Your great, thank you for your vid… 🇺🇸
Yes great memories od all these songs 🎵 💖💫💖
I'm amazed at how in many of these reaction videos, the people reacting just DON'T GET IT. Of course he's in love, that's obvious from the lyrics as a whole, and the fact he's repeatedly denying it, is what the song is all about: It's about how society sees strength in a man if he suppresses his emotions, and sees weaknesses in admitting to them and illustrates how we're brought up to be that way; (the 'big boys don't cry' interlude expresses that perfectly.)
Lex did.
This song helped me through a hard breakup in the 70’s….the haunting sound really carried it. But I WAS in love, but the line” It’s just a silly thing I’m going through” got me to believe it and made it easier so I held on to that line.
One of the greatest love songs of all time. So clever! And the sound is mesmerising.
His voice says he’s in love from the get go,simply superb song
This is a masterpiece and you should watch how they came about making it...the sounds and techniques are wat before there time.
Basically he loved her...just denial❤🔥
He was trying to convince himself that he wasn’t in love….but he was. “Big boys don’t cry. Big boys don’t cry.” ITS A MASTERPIECE at all levels.
He is so totally in love ❣️❣️❣️
Trying to convince himself otherwise
Oh he's soooo in love! This song! OMG. What a sonic experience. Really sets a mood.
ThisSong hear I when i say goodbye for a Friend, this was good for my Heart,my Mother says dont cry..... The Song is brilliant
This is actually the radio (shorter) version. The album version adds about another 2 1/2 minutes.
I'm so glad you listened to the song with headphones to get the true musical effect, brilliant
The greatest love song ever written.
God Bless.
Old man here...I still have this 45...lol...you two are amazing and I can tell yall will be together for life!!❤
Hi Shawn&Mel❤️ something strange in europe at the 70s is that this song"i am not in Love" was played last just before they closed a DISCO i never understand why they play 105 happy disco songs about love and the final "i am not in Love" by 10cc i love 10cc and i am sure you 2 gone love 10cc❤️❤️🇸🇪🇺🇲 THX Shawn&Mel for a wonderful reaction on 10cc..i am 62 today and i still wonder why they playing this song last on discodance 🌏👁️
I love the ethereal sound of this song! It still sounds great all these years later!
The music in this song is dreamy.
10CC had some amazing singers, all of them were brilliant especially Eric and Lol Creme. Graham Gouldman write lots of hits in the 60's before he became famous with 10cc. They really are a supergroup.
Singers & writers a-plenty…
In love and in complete dry! I saw them do this in England when it was released, 1975 (I was 17). Still has the same effect on me to this day. Still my all time favourite.
Love your reactions, love your channel.
He’s differently in love but he’s trying to deny it.
The Greatest Single EVER Released 😍😍😍😍😍
I first heard this live in MAY 1975.....at Manchester Free Trade Hall, during a home coming gig for 10CC.
*This song is somebody who is very much in love.. so much so that he's trying like hell to deny how he feels. He's trying to talk himself out of being in love. We've all been there, it doesn't work lol*
Makes me cry everytime! Just as it did back in the day!
Love this song so much , thank you ♥️
Completely dishonest he is in love and won't admit it to himself
Exactly!!
Lying on the beach in Cornwall. Hottest summer ever. Listening to the ocean and " Im not in love.". Memory that lasts forever.
I’ve always loved this song! Greatness
LMAO! Watching you guys in your relationship, I knew this one was going to rock your world! 🙂
Jaws”.
Haunting, beautiful song. Nothing else like it.
There is a short documentary 10CC made on the making of this song. It a very good story on the hypnotic classic.
