  • THIS VIDEO IS A RECONSTRUCTION OF THE FOLLOWING SITUATION IN FLIGHT:
18-JAN-2024. An Atlas Air Boeing 747-8 (B748), registration N859GT, performing flight GTI95 / 5Y95 from Miami International Airport, FL (USA) to San Juan Luis Munoz Marin International Airport (Puerto Rico) after departure, about at 3000 feet, declared MAYDAY, reported engine number 2 fire and requested return back to the airport of departure. After landing the airplane vacated the runway and stopped on taxiway for inspection.

    _______________
    THE VALUE OF THIS VIDEO:
THE MAIN VALUE IS EDUCATION. This reconstruction will be useful for actual or future air traffic controllers and pilots, people who plan to connect life with aviation, who like aviation. With help of this video reconstruction you’ll learn how to use radiotelephony rules, Aviation English language and general English language (for people whose native language is not English) in situation in flight, which was shown. THE MAIN REASON I DO THIS IS TO HELP PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND EVERY EMERGENCY SITUATION, EVERY WORD AND EVERY MOVE OF AIRCRAFT.
SOURCES OF MATERIAL, LICENSES AND PERMISSIONS:
Source of communications - www.liveatc.net/ (I have a permission (Letter) for commercial use of radio communications from LiveATC.net).
Map, aerial pictures (License (ODbL) ©OpenStreetMap -www.openstreetmap.org/copyrig...) Permission for commercial use, royalty-free use.
Radar screen (In new versions of videos) - Made by author.
Text version of communication - Made by Author.
Video editing - Made by author.
    HOW I DO VIDEOS:
    1) I monitor media, airspace, looking for any non-standard, emergency and interesting situation.
    2) I find communications of ATC unit for the period of time I need.
    3) I take only phrases between air traffic controller and selected flight.
    4) I find a flight path of selected aircraft.
    5) I make an animation (early couple of videos don’t have animation) of flight path and aircraft, where the aircraft goes on his route.
    6) When I edit video I put phrases of communications to specific points in video (in tandem with animation).
    7) Together with my comments (voice and text) I edit and make a reconstruction of emergency, non-standard and interesting situation in flight.

The phraseology was very recently changed in the US. Until about 2 years ago, MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY was not how American crews were trained to declare. We were taught to say we are declaring an emergency. The emphasis in my recurrent training has been on using the mayday mayday call per ICAO standards, which the rest of the world follows.

No, "mayday" shouldn't really be used here. Pan Pan would be more appropriate. A mayday call implies the plane is in serious danger, going down, and needs all available resources now. A 74 popping an engine isn't really that big of deal, especially fairly light. I don't know where pilots in the US got trained to call mayday for every little emergency but it has caused major issues when having smaller "urgency" situations everywhere else in the world. Using a mayday everywhere else brings all ATC to a halt, all hands on deck for a crashing airplane. They kind of pissed when they scramble everything for a what should have been a "pan pan" urgency call.

I guess the people who aren't happy and that do have an issue with it are the governments and aviation authorities in numerous other countries around the world. They've all sent multiple notices and threats of huge fines to multiple US carriers who improperly throw out the old mayday call for a minor issue, shutting down their airports and airspace for something minor. Engine fires are not that big of a deal. If everything works right once you pull the fire handle the fires out. The plane can easily fly on 3 engines. A more scary incident is when the engine falls apart or has an uncontained failure. Those often create enormous aerodynamic drag and serious flying issues for the crew.

On takeoff there is a lot going on on the cockpit already, an emergency on takeoff is a lot for the pilots to handle and procedures to follow… it’ll be nice is ATC gave pilots room to work and go trough procedures instead of asking them how many pounds and fuel time they have on board 10 times,, when they clearly took off 3 mins ago heading for a 3 hour flight,,, absolutely unnecessary and putting more stress on pilots

If pilots stated that they could land the plane and weight was under MLW then no other questions about fuel and time should’ve been asked, they clearly had more than 3 hours of fuel on board. The ATC knew they were going to PR which is 3h flight, so no point overwhelming the pilots asking them the same question 3 times.

      @philipstaite4775 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I think that is why the controller asked if it failed on the runway or in flight. The response was on climb out. Still, out of an abundance of caution if they could switch to 8R and at least do a cursory inspection of 9 that would seem like a good idea. Granted 8R is "only" 10500 compared to 9's 13000 ft length. But winds were not a factor - 3 or 4 kts. Maybe that's why they directed them back to 9. After they landed, they'll see if they dropped anything on takeoff or landing. Limit the potential FOD to one runway.
