It's a video that took almost 1 year for the making. In Jan 2021, a few months after we started this channel, someone wrote to us asking us to make a video about Hanyu and his Pooh-san. We couldn't come out with any interesting storyline and scrapped the video idea a couple of times. Until recently, a few month ago, another person commented on "Why don't you guys introduce the mascots carried by each skater". Now, so many skaters are carrying their personalized mascot. And it's becoming a trend in figure skating, started by none other than the GOAT-zuru. After many weeks of information gathering and storyboarding, finally we finished this video! So, let's enjoy this "Figure skating tissue box and their legendary master" 😂
Wonderful collection! Yes... creating videos is highly time consuming. (I know from producing in tv programmes.) I had no idea how big a trend it was amongst skaters. Interesting how Yuzu came to adopt Winnie the Pooh as his "coach" as he says in a CBC interview, rather than characters, say from Pokemon. There was an actual bear cub after whom Winnie the Pooh was created by A.A. Milne, the British author. I don't know whether anyone at the TCC told Yuzu the story or whether it was just the popularity of Disney and American culture in Japan. "Winnipeg Bear" (Winnie's - a nickname) is named after the city where a Canadian soldier and veterinarian, Harry Colebourn grew up. He bought a little bear cub at an Ontario train station while on his way to serve in WW1 and she went with him! Winnie couldn't go to war, so Colebourn found her a home at the London Zoo. A visitor to the zoo, A.A. Milne brought his young son, Christopher Robin and from there, the story began. The "Pooh" part was the name of a friend's swan and became part of the bear's whole name. (Maybe Yuzu did know... after all, he does a beautiful swan in Notte Stellatta!) Winnie was the most tame bear at the zoo and loved corn syrup and condensed milk. She became a significant attraction at the time. Amazingly...everything is related to everything else for the best!

We heard the reason why Yuzu adopted Winnie the Pooh as his personal mascot was that during Japan earthquake in 2011, when he was escaping the collapsing rink, a big brother helped him, and passed him a tissue pack as he was sweating a lot. And there was the Winnie the Pooh on that tissue pack, and he just adopted it. (But couldn't find any interview from Yuzuru / original source about this story. So we didn't include it in the video). In most interviews, Hanyu just said he likes the smile of Winnie the Pooh. So..
Yuzuru called his Pooh "my battleground buddy" that is always giving him an energy and a fighter's spirit. When the pooh rain stopped at the 2021 World Championship due to the Covid19, Yuzuru's winning "pooh" magic disappeared. Then at the Beijing Olympic game, the Pooh mascot was prohibited....then he lost. I really think that Yuzuru's Pooh-san has had a magical power whenever and wherever Yuzuru skated. Maybe he has gone to his home birth place, after he was denied to be with Yuzuru and Yuzuru-fans. I am sure that everyone is missing Yuzuru's Pooh-san.

Thank you for mentioning the Pooh campaign I started for Stockholm WC in 2021 at 20:13 😊 Just to let you know that Children's Hospital and a shelter for women (and their young children) received around 100 Poohs. What's even more amazing is that, after this campaign was published on the local newspaper in Switzerland where I live in, a Turkish lady reached me and donated around 50 plushies. Since the campaign was already over, they couldn't be delivered to Stockholm but I brought them to a mentally disabled Children's center in a poor city in Turkey (I'm Turkish) in my next visit. So Yuzuru fans made not only Swedish children but Turkish ones happy as well
Yuzuru and Winnie the Pooh are friends forever! 🧸🥰 ❤ Never before have I met such love, devotion and respect for the talisman that binds Yuzuru and Pooh. Yuzuru introduced the fashion for talisman covers for napkin holders. They are all very cute, of course. But I like Winnie the Pooh the most.🤗💖 And not because he is a Disney character, but because he is very dear to Yuzuru and always accompanies him. And although Yuzuru is already 27 years old, he continues to take this cute teddy bear with him everywhere. ☺🐻
I've noticed many of these tissue boxes are of Japanese origin (ex. from Japanese cartoons or anime). It's interesting and I wonder what influenced that aside from how cute these characters are

Chinese Fanyus were the first to give Yuzu a POOH SHOWER or POOH RAIN. It happened in Shanghai (China) during WC 2015. It was held in the same arena in which Yuzu collided with Han Yan (COC 2014).

Correction: Anna Shcherbakova's Tissue Box is not Rilakkuma but Chairoikoguma. It is darker shade than Rilakkuma and has a distinct patch of white fur on its chin and a honey on its butt.

I find the use of these mascots quite problematic actually. IDK if Im going to get in trouble for this but you have either grown athletes (in the case of yuzuru) or teenagers using teddy bears. Ithink this only contributes to their infantilization of the skaters and, knowing the current state of the sport i dontthink this is beneficial. I mean it is either something that is chosen strategically by their coaches to promote this infantilization or it is a symbol of how this sport has really slowed down their growing up process and has them stuck in their childlike mentality.
I think it's just a functional accessory that is soft and fluffy so it's nice to hold. Small thing to placate them while waiting for results. It's like stroking a pet cat or velvet or squeezing a stress ball- just feels nice. Nothing too deep to think here

i think Anna's tissue box is Chairoikoguma not Rilakkuma. You can distinguish them, Koguma has white fur on its neck while Rilakkuma doesn't.

I think it's just a functional accessory that is soft and fluffy so it's nice to hold. Small thing to placate them while waiting for results.
