Northeastern University's Action Lab brought me out to crack some whips and see how the human body exercises motor control with non-rigid objects.

@@waywardgoddess7219My understanding is that the company takes the orders first, then after the ordering window is closed in November, they'll run of all the plushies for this campaign, then ship them all. This way they bear absolutely no risk of running off a batch of Jacques (in this case) and having any unsold stock.

It is always amazing to hear really niche experts talk about their area of interest and just how naturally it flows. I'm a court reporter, so I've gotten the opportunity to listen to many experts in oddly specific areas - never a whip expert, of course, but definitely some really unique areas of science.
The "oh crap siren" is very real. I'm a fire performer. When I'm learning a new trick I mess up a ton with dry props but the moment i add fire, its a lot easier to do everything right. It's like my body knows "mess this up and it's gonna hurt."
I'm now really questioning the convention who suggested we start with fire juggling when no one had juggled before. I wasn't brave enough
It's interesting to see how even in the lab how you have some subtle extra body movements that show how heavily you've clearly integrated music into your muscle memory. Music does wild things to change the body. I saw a biosensor study on a drummer in drum corps years ago that found they were hitting physical exertion markers like an olympic sprinter but sustaining it over a much longer term and then even when the drummer was on the sideline getting the sensors adjusted, his body reacted just from hearing the music start. I also read a book from a neurology study of professional musicians' brains about how learning a musical instrument to a mastery level can optimize the brain structures not just hearing, but also math and language and build interesting connections to all sorts of different processing centers. These kind of studies are just so fascinating. I also loved hearing you explain - it reminds me of the book On Looking - about expertise and how it changes how you see the world because of it.
That's why I wanted my kids to play an instrument.
I don't know if it was my nerves singing or my adrenaline flowing or what, but every time I heard the cadence for run-on when I was in band, I could literally feel my body revving up to hit the field.
Even now, nearly twenty years out of high school, hearing run-on gives me goosebumps. O.o

Speaking as an ecologist who usually deals with sasquatch quality videos I wish I could lure in my subjects this easily.
And scientist is an actual French speaker it sounds like, rather than his faux accent.
I love how even for a scientific experiement, he has to put on the outfit. Lol. Although he was really rocking the pirate look with the black motion cap on.

Ok... I mean you're shows are awesome. I hope to get to see one someday, but I'm an absolute NERD when it comes to listening to people talk about their niche. It's great getting to hear the little details learned over years of experience which are normally only distilled into silent effortless practical application. I mean, it's the fundamental cause of the Dunning Kreuger effect, right? I just love hearing the answer to me asking in my head, "This looks fairly straightforward, what am I missing that makes this a trained skill?" Thanks for sharing!

I imagine the 'whips have a mind of their own' based on how the individual hides stretch and flex, and how they are braided.
If they ever make a video game where the whip is the main weapon Now we have all the information to make that game as accurate as possible

Good point 😅 I had forgotten about that until a bit after I had posted the comment. It's pretty much just swung around as a loose chainsaw blade and never really used for any type of accuracy either

It’s so wild to see someone who knows the science but has no experience with this application & someone who’s an expert on the application but doesn’t know the science behind it collect & discuss data together.

There’s a point in the video when he lifts up his whip and taking about it. The scientist quickly back away as if they are afraid that deadly whip might touch them

Awesome stuff! I just saw you a week ago at King Richard’s Faire, and I also do research at northeastern, what a small world! Dagmar Sternad, the head of the action lab whose voice you can briefly hear in the middle of the video, was even on my dissertation committee. As a music scientist myself, it’s always awesome to see science and the performing arts interact like this, so thank you.

The "I could go for days" explanation feels very much the same as swinging and catching nunchucks. I'd love to see a comparison between movements using a whip, nunchucks, and three-section staff.

I'm not surprised that he worked in the media industry at all. His voice, manner of speaking, and overall presence make him literally prefectly suited for a career in media-related roles. His voice is soo charming! ✧ ⭒
He was a newscaster!
He was one of my favorite newscasters at NPR. The timbre, inflection, and cadence he used in his radio work made him incredibly soothing to listen to, even when he had to deliver awful news.

On a technical (audio) note, I'm not sure how you had set up your home audio equipment, but even though you had the Rode mike set up in a good place to pick up your voice, that's not what actually captured the sound used in the video. It sounds like it was the mic built into the camera. You might want to review your audio chain and run some more tests to get that working correctly next time.

That is really interesting research! I’d never thought of that, but yeah, humans are decently skilled at dealing with non-rigid objects. I remember learning fly fishing, and having to be taught how _not_ to crack the line, haha. Turns out that understanding of how long lines work is applicable to string and cat toys as well!

The earliest person I have ever seen do this was Michael Jackson in 1996 for his, "short promotional film", for his song, "2 Bad", (from, "HIStory: Past, Present, And Future - BOOK I", which was not released as a single) entitled, "Michael Jackson's Ghosts". It was released in a handful of select theaters later that year in only the U.S. and then worldwide in theaters in 1997 with two new songs added to it. A title track, "Ghosts", and one of his bests being, "Is It Scary", of which both could be found (in their original non-remixed versions) on his hybrid compilation (mistakenly referred to a remix l.p. and also understood to be the world's best selling remix l.p.), "Blood On The Dance Floor - HIStory In The Mix". "Michael Jackson's Ghosts", would be released in multiple physical formats later that year in 1997 internationally but in the U.S. where most of the general public had no knowledge of this project until it aired in late 2001 confusing people who thought it had something to do with his studio l.p., "Invincible", when it did not.
