Those hats the modded samurai are wearing are the hats that the ahigaru, translated to lightfoot in English, were basically the normal samurai foot soldier, they wore those hats and had lighter armour, the armour that you see with the big masks and massive crescents on the helmet were normally reserved for high ranking people like generals, who generally sat back and commanded the troops rather than take part and n the battle.
