I was lucky enough to be invited by Martin to be a guest at NAMM this year. I got to attend the press event the day before the official opening. I met some of the many wonderful folks that have inspired and taught me - and shake the hands of some very cools folks. As I was leaving I walked by the Santa Cruz booth and saw Richard Hoover there working on setting up a display case (yes - he was actually there setting up his own booth, struggling to move one of those big display cases!). I stopped to say hi and share my appreciation for his work and contribution to guitar and music and he invited me to sit down and chat for a bit. He was kind and open and generous with his time and it was great to hear about his story and path to where he is now and the passion he still has for making special instruments. He shared the joy he has now that he can apply all that he's learned to building guitars with the best pieces of wood that he's set aside during his career. There was all sorts of stuff happening all around us (there is no equaling the noise of setup day at NAMM!) but for about 15m, the only thing that was happening in my world was me and Richard Hoover chatting about guitars. What a treat!
That’s an absolutely amazing story! Richard is one of a kind, and makes you feel like you’re the only one in the room when he’s speaking to you. He’s a treasure in our little community, and we’re lucky to all have shared a bit of time on this spinning rock with him.
One day I shall have the pleasure of owning a Santa Cruz guitar... but today in not that day. Stunning instrument. What a full-bodied and resonant sound. Thanks Matt + great interview 👍
Matt The H 13 what a beautiful sounding guitar I think that by watching you play it it appeared even you were stunned by its beauty. What a beautiful tribute to Santa Cruz. Amazing amazing guitars. Matt thank you for educating us on the tone woods.
I sure appreciate that! This guitar needs that room to breath and sustain out. It was a pleasure to have been able to connect with such a creation for a few sweet notes.
At one time, I owned A 1998 Santa Cruz mahogany back and sides with a Sitka top dreadnaught. For some bizarre reason I sold it, the regrets continue to this day! I would relish an opportunity to get it back; not knowing the serial number that’s probably not possible, but a ‘98 would be perfect… maybe one day!
Incredible story and an impeccably beautiful guitar. Sorry to be the rogue here but the tone I don’t think is extraordinary. There’s no richness and resonance in the lower end but in reality this is a wall hanger and not a working guitar.

Marvelous playing at the end. Beautiful.

I recently got an H13 and was shocked. The depth of tone of a large guitar with the response of a 00. Truly brilliant design.
Again Richard Hoover 👑 of woods

great but the playing at the end, is it my ears or does the low E string sound out of tune?
Think it's down tuned buddy
