Kato was like a devil dog but a staunch Ally when he was your friend and on your side, but a constant power struggle of unruliness, yet a loyal protector. Ming was pure merciless killing any animal, fox, bird, or cat that entered her territory but harmlessly immobilized by any human we associated with
What a beautiful girl! I couldnt help but notice the fishbowl, however. You should never keep fish in a bowl with no filter as it's basically animal abuse
Just a tip: when leaving, don't make a fuzz about it. Dog doesn't care if you kiss him or even say a word to him when leaving, more the other way around, he will miss you even more after close contact before leaving. I would give him a (safe) treat and go before he eats it. I use dried fish.
I will admit: With previous pets, I have never been a "pro" in potty training. Mika was the easiest dog I have ever potty trained. She was always quite a low maintenance puppy. (For the first couple of weeks we were starting to think she might be deaf and/or dumb because of the lack of noise she made!) Mika made potty training a breeze for us. It was very early on that she became smart enough to catch onto standing at the door when she needed to go. She was not very energetic as a puppy so when she was up and around we assumed that meant it was time. All of that being said, I was able to be home with her a majority of the day and she was rarely left home alone. I realize that might not be possible for some dog owners. I'm not sure if it was Mika's breed or just her personality, but she was relatively easy to potty train in my opinion! Thanks for asking! (:
Wow 17 years! Do you breed Akitas? Where did you get the Akita? What did you feed it? My first one died after 7 years. Sheba, my new girl is at 9 years old. I can't bear to part with her ever. She is so special to me. I feed her Perscriprion Diet food, the egg and rice formula. She has a sensitive stomach so the only people food she gets is tofu and cucumbers. I probably won't get another Akita because l love her so much nothing can replace her.
Christina Fisher No, I wish I did!! I would always choose the Akita breed... I still miss him. Very beautiful and the smartest breed I’ve ever seen!!! ❤️❤️❤️
hello i have a 48 day american akita she raised her ears at 38 days and after 7 days they fell again will she get up does anyone know the answer? otherwise the dog is progressing well eating well and I have no health problem thanks!
Naomi Blackford - Yes of course, to the owners! I’m thinking of an Akita for protection too, a lot of crime in my area, so would be nice to have a companion.
You will fall in love with the breed. They are definitely one-owner type dogs. Give them the attention they need and deserve and they will be your best friend!
Apologies if this has already been answered but can you give me an honest run down on the shedding situation in your experience? I’ve read they shed heavily two times per year when they “blow out” their undercut but how is it the rest of the year? Do they shed still all year round or none at all between these blowouts?
Joseph Peters we’ve had Akita’s for 25 years. They shed. A lot. They blow their undercoat usually twice a year. You need a good groomer and a really good vacuum. But in spite of that, they are our breed. We have hair on our clothes, furniture, and carpet. It’s worth it. We have a clothes roller in every room.
I have always seen and heard stories about them blowing their coats and how its something like shearing sheep. I have definitely experienced shedding in the spring, even heavy shedding, but nothing like shearing. It lasted about one week and it only took a couple brushing sessions a day to get the chunks off. I live in Oklahoma where the weather rarely gets below 20 degrees so she may not grow enough coat to "blow". She isn't full grown yet either. So I guess the very inconvenient answer to your question is, I'm not sure! Haha! So sorry. I understand your worry though as it was one of my main concerns too when first looking into the breed. Good luck in your research!
I just had to put my 5 year old boy down😢😢 regarding shedding honestly I never had an issue. I took him to a groomer 1x month. Gets pricey after a while but well worth the crash. Never experience heavy hair on my clothes nor anywhere inside the house.
I really want an Akita but people told me to never get one if you have cats. I have 2 cats but when I see people with their Akita being friendly to their cats I get confused. Are they okay with cats or not?
From what I understand, just about any dog breed may be trained to tolerate the company of other animals. I have also heard, though, that Akitas inherently prefer to be alone with their humans! Mika had no other choice but to share a home with our indoor/outdoor cat Tommy.😁
Hi! I see you have a Cat, how is your Akita with the cat? I have a Bengal cat approaching his 1st birthday, and I am looking to get a dog. Either a German Shepherd, but my dream is an American Akita An Akita is my favourite dog, I have had experience with Rotties and a GSD, but Akitas are so formidable! A complete new test. I was wondering, as my only concern is how is your Akita with the cat? I have seen that 60/40 leans towards not getting an Akita if you have a cat.. Thank you!
I can’t speak on this with any authority. The cat in the video is a very..different cat and doesn’t act in the same way some cats do as far as other animals go. I could probably say the same for Mika though as well. If I could offer you any advice, I might say to be very cautious when trying to introduce the two animals and just see how they do together! 😊

Awe! How funny. Since I have had Mika I have heard that name several times! Especially for spitz breeds. We wanted a name that had meaning. Mika ("美香" in Japanese) means beautiful (or so the internet told us) and once we said the name outloud a few times it sort of stuck. We love it! My family and I have Native American heritage and so Mika's entire name is "Soqua Mika". Soqua, in the Cherokee language, means "1" which we gave her because she was our first Akita! Since then, we have acquired "Obi", our little boy Akita. A video dedicated to him is soon to come!
Hi Charlotte! When I decided that I wanted a dog, I started looking into Akita breeders near me from the AKC “puppy finder” website. The particular breeder who I bought Mika from may not be on the site anymore but there were many others to choose from! Good luck.😊
They do shed. From what I have read, they are supposed to shed “twice a year” once to shed the summer coat and then the winter coat. Her first year she barely shed at all except for in the spring. This last few months (she two years old) she has shed much more. I also live in a comparatively warmer climate so that may contribute. I know some people who own Husky’s and I would say: No, my Akita does not shed as much as a Husky.
That's pretty lame. Why aren't you keeping your Akita? Did you fail him in some way? Akitas are stubborn and strong willed but I hear they are worth the effort. I have an Akita mix myself and he is a pain in the ass some of the time, and I sometimes began to despair, but I would not give him up. This is a dog that would give its life for you. So you better have a damned good reason for having to rehome your dog, you weakling.
@@madelinemann3818lovely Akira. Best breed ever. Small correction though. This is not a Japanese Akita but an American Akita. The American Akita is derived from the Japanese breed standard, but was originally crossed with the Mastiff breed after the second world war by returning American servicemen. The Japanese standard is much smaller in size and does not have a black muzzle I believe. Lovely anyway!
Mika is the first dog I have ever owned and I have no regrets. That being said, I have heard by many Akita breeders and trainers that they are not good “first time” dogs. They do have a very stubborn personality and require much attention and training. I have found both of these to be true with Mika as well!
If you live in the U.S. I would suggest marketplace.akc.org/puppies/akita If not, contact local dog breeders and they will most likely be able to direct you to a reliable source! My advice would be to get in contact with a breeder and ask them about upcoming litters. It is always nice to have a good relationship with the breeder to ensure you receive just what you are looking for! I still chat with Mika's breeder online and send her photo updates! Good luck on your Akita journey!
The introduction happened over several short meetings passing by in the hallways or when we were all in the living room. Other than that, they mostly chose to stay in separate rooms. They were both fairly young when they met too, which I think helps. We didn’t allow them to be home alone together until about a year ago. They have the typical cat-dog relationship. Mika will get playful with Tommy, but Tommy will let her know when he’s had enough! Thanks for the comment!
Hi I love your dog she’s so cute and well trained I was wondering how you trained her I just got an Akita and would really appreciate any tips you have I’m having trouble with puppy biting:( Thx🐶
Krystina, Thank you very much! Mika came to us with a very sweet and obedient spirit. She was never the puppy to bite excessively (although I have had a puppy or two with that habit!). Most likely, your puppy is learning how to play with you. With a pups littermates, playing = biting. You need to let him know that biting = pain for you! Mika's obedience class instructor advised me to "yelp!" or "screech!" whenever a puppy "play bites". (This was how the pups litter mates would notify him that the pain was too much.) Stay patient with him and good luck! Madeline and Mika
Same here Krystina.. Been having my Akita since he was 8 weeks.. He's 5 months now and he still tries to nibble.. Constantly tell him no but he steady does it 😥
Her fee that I paid her breeder upfront was $600. Expenses since then I can only estimate to be somewhere over $5000 and counting. Maybe more than that. But, I'll tell you she is worth every penny!

I have a 2 month old Akita and she looks identical except her face is white. She lays down the exact same way too it’s hilarious
Awe, yes! I love the distinctive Akita features and mannerisms.
American Akita are majestic dogs...
Yes!
Your so very lucky to have Meka good parents
I had two Japanese/American Akitas Kato and Ming and ironically they lived their name sakes. Kato was like a devil dog but a staunch Ally when he was your friend and on your side, but a constant power struggle of unruliness, yet a loyal protector. Ming was pure merciless killing any animal, fox, bird, or cat that entered her territory but harmlessly immobilized by any human we associated with
Beautiful creature
What a beautiful girl! I couldnt help but notice the fishbowl, however. You should never keep fish in a bowl with no filter as it's basically animal abuse
Thank you for the advice!
Or u could just clean the tank yourself
Just a tip: when leaving, don't make a fuzz about it. Dog doesn't care if you kiss him or even say a word to him when leaving, more the other way around, he will miss you even more after close contact before leaving.
I would give him a (safe) treat and go before he eats it. I use dried fish.
Thanks so much for the tip. I’ll have to try that!
3:50 is there any oil left in the car or is it all on the ground?
robac000 I was power wash his whole house for the low
Haha, it was a parking lot actually. I didn't even notice how bad that looks until just now! Haha!
American Akita - the best dog ever.
Agreed!
Gotta love German shepherd's as well!😁
As she matures she will not bark (sound off) when what she think is a threat (in her territory) is not a threat. She is growing well!
Thank you! She was never one for barking or really making any noises at all. Always more of an observer.🙂
I would love to know where you got her. I'm looking for a reliable source. Thank you so much she's beautiful
Can you share your tips of house breaking your baby? She is such a good girl.
I had Simon for 17 yrs best love and loyal dog I’ve ever had ❤️❤️😪😪
They really grow on ya!!
Yes they do... smart breed for sure ❤️
What a beautiful great dog.. take care.. ❤
I love akita
Great 🐕
im sorry but i need to say this about the puppy..
its a fluffy cute chunky baby! ❤
Yes, her little bear face is my favorite!😍
I had an Akita growing up and his name was “Miko”. Hope to have another Akita one day!
What kind of Akita was it? An American akita or an Akita?
hello i have a 48 day american akita she raised her ears at 38 days and after 7 days they fell again will she get up does anyone know the answer? otherwise the dog is progressing well eating well and I have no health problem thanks!
I am not sure about this one! I’ll have to do a little more research. Thank you for your comment and for the update on your baby! 🤗
We raise Akita’s and Siberian Huskies and the love from these breeds is so special ❤️💕
They have definitely stolen my heart. Such unique personalities!❤️
Beautiful
I’m getting an Akita in 2 weeks. So excited!!!
Awesome! I’m thinking of getting an Akita. I love how they look aggressive, whilst having fairly short hair too.
@j00 yes I love how they look fierce. By are actually super sweet.
Naomi Blackford - Yes of course, to the owners! I’m thinking of an Akita for protection too, a lot of crime in my area, so would be nice to have a companion.
j00- yes they are great for that. I live in an area with lots of coyotes and the breeder we are buying from say that they help a lot with that too.
Depends on how you train them and is it an Akita or an American akita
From what I understand, just about any dog breed may be trained to tolerate the company of other animals. I have also heard, though, that Akitas inherently prefer to be alone with their humans! Mika had no other choice but to share a home with our indoor/outdoor cat Tommy.😁
Oh

😍
Hi!
I see you have a Cat, how is your Akita with the cat? I have a Bengal cat approaching his 1st birthday, and I am looking to get a dog. Either a German Shepherd, but my dream is an American Akita
An Akita is my favourite dog, I have had experience with Rotties and a GSD, but Akitas are so formidable!
Hii , I will have a new akita. Can you explain how you handled toilet training?
I will admit: With previous pets, I have never been a "pro" in potty training. Mika was the easiest dog I have ever potty trained. She was always quite a low maintenance puppy. (For the first couple of weeks we were starting to think she might be deaf and/or dumb because of the lack of noise she made!) Mika made potty training a breeze for us. amazing breed
How cute !!! I just got an akita malamute puppy and his name is Milo☺️
I just got an akita too and her name is Zara🥰
I bet he is just adorable! I’ve seen some amazing Akita breed mixes. I can only imagine the fluffy-ness of the Malamute!😍
One of the most intelligent dogs on earth. Fun fact: They were owned by the noble in Japan and bred for 2 purposes. Fighting and hunting. Uch a beautiful creature.
She truly is so intelligent. Very observational. She can speak with her eyes!
👍😄😍 beautiful 🎄🌍☃️ Happy new year
So cute
Adoro los akita y ellos te cuidan y te aman por siempre, son muy dignos❤️❤️❤️
I have a American Akita and it’s 8 months rn
what food did you have her on as a pup?
The Akita is my Bucket list dog I gotta get 1 or 2🙄
For sure. Once you fall in love with the breed you will want another!
@@madelinemann3818 I live in ALABAMA 2years ago me & girlfriend was going home I seen this guy with an akita I had to turn around to go see it. The guy let me touch it i ask first bcuz I know about them. I gotta have 1😁
@@barokkapoles6768 Probably too late but getting 2 akitas can be dangerous. Especially if they are the same gender. They will be constantly competing for alpha this can lead to fights. If you want two dogs I would suggest you pick one that is less dominate than a akita.
Yassss!! I feel you on that for sure!
What color is this Akita ? 😍 where did you get him from ? I’m looking for same kind of puppy.
Amazing
i ja imam bebu akita, potpuno je ista sa ovom bebom, predivna je
Predivni su psi. Hvala na komentaru.
Where did you got her?
I got her from a registered American Akita breeder discovered on the AKC puppy finding website! 😊
Do they bark? I didnt hear at all in this video
vlad ### , Surprisingly, no! She was always very quiet. Akita’s are known for this trait.
Madeline Mann nice, it fits me actually, i live in apartment.
My a a is eight now still doing all same thing yours is doing they are brave and tuff same time can be funny and cute love akita s they sleep in mad place s
Wayne Power
Yep, quirky ways to sleep, as I turn to look at ours,
To find her with her head under the curtain.
Don't you just love em.
Oh wow, my baby akita is named Mika too!
Awe!
Where did you get her if you don't mind me asking? I really want one and am tired of waiting. I'm doing it!
Hi Charlotte! When I decided that I wanted a dog, I started looking into Akita breeders near me from the AKC “puppy finder” website. The particular breeder who I bought Mika from may not be on the site anymore but there were many others to choose from! Good luck.😊
How bad do they shed? Husky bad?
They do shed. From what I have read, they are supposed to shed “twice a year” once to shed the summer coat and then the winter coat. Her first year she barely shed at all except for in the spring. This last few months (she two years old) she has shed much more. I also live in a comparatively warmer climate so that may contribute. I know some people who own Husky’s and I would say: No, my Akita does not shed as much as a Husky.
I can't wait to get one. This will be my next dog. Just need get some more space
Mika looks exactly like my akita katsu! He was born december 1 2017. Sadly we're currently looking to find him a new home
Awe! That is so sweet. Well, we hope you find a great new owner for your sweet Katsu!
@@nightowl8936 quick to judge are we? Could be a number of reasons why the owner needs to rehome their dog.
Where do you live? I'm currently looking for another dog and am familiar with Akitas.
What is the name of that other dog breed?
I believe he is a German Shepherd/Husky/Wolf mix of some kind. A family friend’s!
Your Japanese akita is beutiful and lovely colours i had one seven years and he was the best I love akitas you are right she is beutiful 💜💜💜💜💜
Thank you! Yes, I love the Akitas.
American Akita.
Is akita is good for first timers?
Mika is the first dog I have ever owned and I have no regrets. That being said, I have heard by many Akita breeders and trainers that they are not good “first time” dogs. They do have a very stubborn personality and require much attention and training. I have found both of these to be true with Mika as well!
Uno spettacolo di cucciolo stupendo ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
a caps fan and Akita owner 👏🏽
Beautiful dog.....love the breed....what you happen to where I can get one from....?
If you live in the U.S. I would suggest marketplace.akc.org/puppies/akita If not, contact local dog breeders and they will most likely be able to direct you to a reliable source! My advice would be to get in contact with a breeder and ask them about upcoming litters. It is always nice to have a good relationship with the breeder to ensure you receive just what you are looking for! I still chat with Mika's breeder online and send her photo updates! Good luck on your Akita journey!
Thank you...
I pick my Akita baby up in 6 weeks! I saw your fur baby with a cat, was it difficult introducing them? ♥️
Hi I love your dog she’s so cute and well trained
I was wondering how you trained her I just got an Akita and would really appreciate any tips you have
I’m having trouble with puppy biting:(
Thx🐶
Krystina,
Thank you very much! (This was how the pups litter mates would notify him that the pain was too much.)
Stay patient with him and good luck!
Madeline and Mika
Same here Krystina.. Been having my Akita since he was 8 weeks.. He's 5 months now and he still tries to nibble.. Constantly tell him no but he steady does it 😥
@@LexKatrice1993 Try the method I mentioned and let me know how and if it works for you!
How much was she ?
Her fee that I paid her breeder upfront was $600. Expenses since then I can only estimate to be somewhere over $5000 and counting. Maybe more than that. But, I'll tell you she is worth every penny!
What type of expenses are u talking for over 5000 dollars?😗😮🤔
