  • Mika the American Akita. Short videos and pictures of Mika growing from an 8 week old puppy to almost 8 months (70lbs)! Also included in the short film are a few photos of Mika's good friend Tommy the Tomcat and a, rather lengthy, video of Mika and I completing her first Obedience Training Exam. Enjoy!

    Funny, we adopted a white German Shepherd after our other Akita died, then got a another female Akita. She looks the same. She is a Mariah Akita from Indianapolis. Yours is so cute. I said I'd never get another Akita after this one because I love her so much that she could never be replaced. The best dog training book is Brenda Alloff's book Dogs with Agression.

    • @madelinemann3818
      @madelinemann3818  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Over these past few years, I have noticed that Mika, as an Akita, doesn't really do the best with other dogs (or even other animals) but for some reason she seems to at least tolerate the German Shepherds she has encountered. Possibly because of their evolutionary relationship? Not sure. I'll be sure to check out Alloff's book! Thanks for sharing Christina!

    Your Akita, Mika, is absolutely beautiful! I had an Akita for 15 years and she was absolutely the best friend that I could ever have had! Koda, my Akita's name, brought joy to our family each and every day of her life! She was just a wonderful friend, caring and loving family member who I still miss to this day! Your Mika reminds me of Koda in her temperament and body language so I am sure you two are going to have a caring, loving and wonderful member of your family for many, many more years to come! I hope you continue to post videos of Mika as I would like to know how she is doing in the future. Thanks again for the video as it brought back the smile that I use to have when my Koda was with me, thank you! Give Mika a big hug for me and enjoy all the fun and times your beautiful baby bear is going to give you! Take care!

      @@mewchu I can not speak for the breed as a whole but I can tell you that Mika does not get along well with other dogs. I assume it is the protective nature in her. She is very protective of me and my family so anything that she sees as a threat she is ready to approach. I have seen other Akitas who are trained out of this or who don't possess this quality so I know there are "dog-friendly" Akitas.

    A beautiful breed. We have an akita ourselves; a beautiful boy named Bounty. He's anxious towards other dogs and strangers, and he generally keeps to himself around the house, but he's part of the family.
    I'm a bit worried for him though...He's turning 9 in a few months, and while the breed can live for a decently long time by dog standards, he's also prone to seizures, so I worry that one day he'll have a seizure and his heart won't be able to take it...
    I know that loss is expected, especially among species with shorter lifespans than our own, but it still makes me sad to think that one day Bounty won't be around anymore...

      We have a Kuma! Kuma Cochise and he’s 21 wks old and amazing! He is one of two we own, Miska is our two yr old female. No we don’t breed, Miska is spayed & Kuma’s appointment is set for his neutering. He is our 7th, over 25 yrs and owning two each time with one of our babies being a hybrid making 8 dogs in all. Always when we lose one we feel the same way at first, we’ll never get another because the heartbreak is so severe! We always end up with a new Akita puppy to help the one left behind to heal and it always seems to help us thru our sorrow as well. Each one of our Akita’s have been completely different from the other as far as personalities, but the traits are almost always the same😊That’s what we love about our beautiful babies! @@madelinemann3818lovely Akira. Best breed ever. Small correction though. This is not a Japanese Akita but an American Akita. The American Akita is derived from the Japanese breed standard, but was originally crossed with the Mastiff breed after the second world war by returning American servicemen. The Japanese standard is much smaller in size and does not have a black muzzle I believe. Lovely anyway!

      @madelinemann3818  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awe! How funny. Since I have had Mika I have heard that name several times! Especially for spitz breeds. We wanted a name that had meaning. Mika ("美香" in Japanese) means beautiful (or so the internet told us) and once we said the name outloud a few times it sort of stuck. We love it! My family and I have Native American heritage and so Mika's entire name is "Soqua Mika". Soqua, in the Cherokee language, means "1" which we gave her because she was our first Akita!
      Since then, we have acquired "Obi", our little boy Akita. A video dedicated to him is soon to come!

      Krystina,
      Thank you very much! Mika came to us with a very sweet and obedient spirit. She was never the puppy to bite excessively (although I have had a puppy or two with that habit!). Most likely, your puppy is learning how to play with you. With a pups littermates, playing = biting. You need to let him know that biting = pain for you! Mika's obedience class instructor advised me to "yelp!" or "screech!" whenever a puppy "play bites". (This was how the pups litter mates would notify him that the pain was too much.)
      Stay patient with him and good luck!

    American Akitas were not bred in US despite their name, here's the short story.
    During the WWII, the Japanese military government prohibited people from having dogs except the ones potentially be used for military duties, so the German Shepherd mix was allowed.
    Many Akita and GS mixed breed were produced.
    At the end of the war, the US GIs looked for Akita, in big part because of Helen Keller's effort to popularize the breed, she spoke out loud every opportunities she got how much she loved her Akita. She owned many dogs of different kinds because of her blindness, any dog would have helped.
    The problem was that the GIs didn't know what Akita looks like nor did they even care. They picked up the mixed breed happily because they were bigger and more available than Japanese pure bred Akitas.
    By looking at the photos, the dogs Helen Keller had(she had two in sequence, one had died prematurely) weren't even pure breed Akitas either(but they seemed to have the same personality of Akita).
    That resulted in far more of Mixed breed Akitas(black masked Akita) in US than pure bred Japanese Akitas.
    That's the reason why people start calling them American Akita, even though the breed wasn't created in US.

      This is very interesting! It makes a lot of sense. I love the look of the Japanese Akita's. The fuller face, almond eyes and orange coat are all just beautiful. Another thing, how Helen Keller found out about Akita.(She specifically mentioned she wanted the breed when she visited Japan before the WWII)
      You can guess why, yep she read the story of Hachi.

Or of course behavior issues due to lack of training. Check the various rescues online. A fantastic breed! If trained well.

I have an Akita mix myself and he is a pain in the ass some of the time, and I sometimes began to despair, but I would not give him up. This is a dog that would give its life for you.
