    First: craziest most embarrassing card story: I have a card with a line drawing of a dorky girl (it me, ok, it's 14 yr old me!) and it's for Mother's Day and says "Thanks for loving me through all of my awkward phases" It started to sell well on Etsy and then I got a convo from a customer who pointed out that I spelled "awkward" wrong. So I sold about 25 of these with the spelling "akward". I was mortified. Talk about being literally awkward...
    Also, where were you when I was starting my stationery business 12 years ago?! (probably in middle school? haha!) Such a helpful guide and I think you did a great job talking about the basic greeting card biz start up stuff ;) I was going to leave a comment originally to recommend...RED RIVER PAPER too! The polar matte makes the colors PoP like nobody's business and I used it faithfully for years, so what a small world!!! No one had ever heard of them, I found them after tons of research and test printing about 10 years ago. Now I use an outside printer because I just had to let go of all the work of printing my own stuff especially once I was starting to get wholesale orders.
    And I'm with you on the cello sleeve hate. I HATE IT. But stores want it. I use the compostable cello from ClearBags and it's $10 USD for 100, but I buy in bulk once or twice a year and get the price down to about $.06 USD per sleeve. I didn't convert that to CAD, but was hoping maybe that would be a better price for you? $.20 a sleeve is pricey, but it could just be the conversion!
    Ok, that's enough from me, sheesh!

      debbie!! omg it means a lot that a greeting card master such as yourself liked my vid!
      the cello sleeve is a struggle for sure. I am very new to wholesaling so I have yet to make a bulk order of sleeves that big, but you're totally right--the price would come down in a bigger order. I've only had one wholesale order of cards so far... I should definitely offer the sleeves on my cards on Faire if I want more stores to pick them up!
      also I am cackling at the akward story 😂❤ I feel like you could have committed to the misspelling because it fits the message!

    Do you have any tips on how to price your cards for wholesale? I've been researching and I see a wide variety of formulas. Curious how you price. I also wondered where you source your card sleeves. I haven't been able to find one that fits the envelope well. Thanks. :) I'm just getting started in greeting cards and this was helpful. I priced mine about the same. Good to know my reasoning makes sense. :) lol

      do you mean like what % to set for wholesale?? I think most places expect about 50% so I try to work around that:) & and I talk about where I get sleeves in the materials section of this vid!!

      @@maybekatie thank you. That helps. Do you have a minimum order for wholesale? The margins are so thin on cards, just trying to figure out how to make it profitable. Have you had a good experience with faire?

    Thank you so much for the great info! I started making hand crafted cards a couple of years ago but haven't put myself out there yet. I had some sales through ladies I know but now I would like to branch out and make some printed cards and start an Etsy shop. I feel so overwhelmed already. Trying to set up my epson for the best quality print is something I would really love to know more about! Id also love to know how to start a shop on Etsy, I have no idea what I am doing *cries*. I'm also in Canada!

    Hi great video- do you also consider the cost of mailing the cards to the buyers?

    • @maybekatie
      @maybekatie  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't factor that into my costs because my customers pay for shipping when they purchase from my website or faire:)

    omg YES this is so helpful! i make art prints but ive played with the idea of making greeting cards. i bought glassine bags for my small business because theyre more eco-friendly than plastic, but it is helpful for things like cards and prints to be in a completely clear bag so people can see it and the card is more weather-proofed. but as you and others have said, the compostable clear bags are a lifesaver!! i’m planning on getting some someday and making little notes that let people know the bag is compostable, as i’ve seen a few other artists do that and i think it’s a lovely idea!
    thanks again for the tips! youre amazing and i hope you continue to grow 🧡
