- It's that time of year again where the gong summons those to the land of Silithus. We honor the events of the opening of Ahn'Qiraj and the heroes that fell in the war against the forces of C'thun. But, what's the story behind all of this? That's what we're going to talk about today!

in 2006 my PC could barely handle running 5 man dungeons above 20 fps. My first blue screen ever happened because of the opening of AQ. I ran all the way from the closest flight point i had as a level 45 Human Warlock (Tanaris) and the moment i stepped foot into Silithus, my pc froze and Blue Screened.
Clearly the greatest wow event in history for everyone who got to take part in it...
Why did computers use to blue screen back in the days anyway? No fail-safe?

I remember when the gates opened on my server. I was still leveling to 60 in Silithus, a bunch of my friends were there and I asked why. They said come meet us over on the southern part of the map. I got there, and got stepped on by an Anubasath Guardian. xD

My reaction was mostly along the lines of "What the hell is that?! Why is it chasing me? It's a skull!" Then heard friends laughing followed by "you guys are assholes." But its what made me want to really get into raiding because I saw all these guilds fighting these things I knew I wanted to do that.
I was in on killing those things with my guild. It was a different time.
This video makes me miss the times when the dragonflights were important. :(

I ran into one of those Scarab Lords last week, in LFR Antorus, of all places. He had the title and the black battle bug. I didn't expect someone that hardcore to still play WoW, let alone run LFR, which many say killed WoW.
Game Dev Ion is a Scarab Lord...so are couple folks that work for him.
he/she probably has adult things to do now.. like so many of me and my friends. LFR is a way to experiencing content without having to set aside 5hrs at a set time.
My server Arthas opened the gates about March, man was that a cool even leggy as all hell but so awesome. Sadly my guild had only started clearing bwl at the time and never made it far into aq.
But the effort and drive behind it and the community is something that no game has been able to replicate since.

I think it's cool that they're looking to reward the longest playing players that have stuck with them.
mikehdx3 more like the ones who were able to do all that shit, I took part in the event but because I couldn’t find a raid guild to join I couldn’t even attempt the sceptre quest.
Hated that it involved raids then and I resent that due to it I missed out on the mount

I remember when the gate opened on my server and I had no idea what was going on because I hadn't hit end-game content yet. Never bothered to learn much but AQ40. Big thanks for the video.

ppl did that mount puzzle not long ago (it nothing compared to this i know) so i think there are still ppl willing to dive into to this type of quests :)
I still remember the AQ opening event, the character who opened it on my server was called Gideon from the guild The Last Watch, back before cross servers when exceptional people and guilds made names for themselves in the community. Truly legendary event.

ah, the good old war effort. i was leveling my first character at that time. an orc warrior i still have to this day. she put forward some herbs and bandages, but i didn't have access to the other components. i also remember waking up at 4 in the AM to watch my dad participate in the opening of the gates(i was only level 45 or so at the time, so i couldn't survive the trek through ungoro, let alone silithus). fun times. i had thought initially "there are only like 8 guys coming out of the gates, is this supposed to be dangerous?" about 5 seconds later they started cleaving through the assembled horde and alliance players and i went from "thats it?" to "welp... they're screwed"
finally I was able to understand this legendary quest! thanks fo the video Nobbel, very good job.
I have no idea from which timezone you are, but you always post new video during the night and my morning cofee ritual is always beautiful when I start my day (or week) with your video. Keep on the good work.
Finally managed to get the 'Veteran of the Shifting Sands' achievement on 11/30/10. At higher levels it was much easier to complete many of the quests solo, getting through BWL with the by then rare random raids, having them fall apart at the first few bosses or not winning the Elementium ore was infuriating. When I watched the video I kept thinking 'did I really go through all that?', couldn't remember half of it.
i found a book from a rare spawn in Silithus this is what was written in it.

I remember the Gates of AQ event. Most of my guild were going. We got the boat from Menethil Harbour, well we got on the boat, which dumped random players in the sea, resulting in stages of corpse swimming back to the dock, and waiting for the next ship. Now my guild was split up, but we all eventually got to Theramore. From there we ran through S.Barrens down Thousand needles and Tanaris, and arrived via Un 'Goro crater. The whole of Silithus was full of giant statues like Anubis and creatures that could one shot the players. The servers kept breaking. It was very hard to see what was happening, or work out what you were supposed to be doing in a laggy sea of players and mobs. Once you did start collecting the servers would go down again. It was chaos, it was glorious, it was the one event I know I will never forget.
I had no idea it was that involved. I know the joke was that you had to do a lot to get in. But this? This is INSANE. Thanks much for doing all of this research. It must have been fascinating.

I remember when the gate opened on my server, low population yet there was still nearly a thousand people in Tanaris ready to charge in.
Then the massive Anubarath fuckers came out and started tearing through the crowds. So glad I decided to watch from a distance using eagle eye.XD

Sunken Temple was one of my favorite dungeons in game pre-cata. I really enjoyed running it. Also Zul'Farak and Maurudan.

Dude, I remember Kalahad! He was one of the best warriors on the server for atleast the next few expansions, or atleast from what I remember. I had the opportunity to group up with him a time or 2, but I didn't realize he was this famous within the community.

The opening of the gates had to be the most epic event in game so far. I wonder if the person who rang the gong first is still playing. I've never seen the Scarab Lord title or the mount.

Dear god, the memories. The Alliance needing to gather Linen cloth and the Horde needing to gather Wool cloth was hell. Back then the Horde had a great way to farm it in Ragefire Chasm and the Alliance had a great way to farm it in Deadmines. So it lead to both sides needing to try and run each other's dungeons and encourage people not to attack them when they came into hostile territory.

You dont get any cool rewards like mog or mount (cause people would be fomo) but the reward is experiencing it yourself instead of just reading the novels. Dont get me wrong the novels are good and there things that are better told in certain medium. but this! i wish I couldve experienced this, or if you were playing back then, wow is streaming it themselves live so you can watch.

I completed that quest on 3 toons, during TBC tho, was so much fun
I personally believe that they should allow 1 new scarab lord per server per event every year moving forward. It stays limited but it makes it to where it isn't completely unobtainable. Scarab lords are so rare now.
i hope, and hope with all my heart that this, all of this is available on the classic servers when they are live.
I started playing wow when this opening the door event was going on. I was so confused lol. I was like why do these dudes need my bandages? Ah well, guess I can make a bunch. I was totally new to MMOs so I didnt even know what a raid was lol. Wow was different then, good times. Still miss those days. Which is why AQ has a special place in my heart.
You should consider saying something about the Ysera Server and this event. A single person waited until minutes before the servers shut down and rang the gong. Because of this only one person on the server ever got the mount. Supposedly that is why they never did anything like that again with a limited time frame for a mount.
I love the amount of crying about people getting a mount for putting in effort years ago.

Okay, but the rest of them have been playing since pre-Cata, which is quite some time.
Like half the forums on patch day of 7.3.5 were posts of kids whining about a mount they could've never obtained because they've only played for a month.
I mean, they already got their rewards 12 years ago in the form of a mount and title, did they really need another mount on top of that one? People bitch and moan all the time about people being handed stuff for doing nothing, and that's exactly what the new Black Qiraji mount is. You could've played back in Vanilla and been the one to bang the gong quit and never came back until today, and bam a free mount. Also, the original mount hasn't even been available for like 10 years now, so not sure what the "only played for a month" comment is all about. I also don't think most are demanding that Blizz give it for free to everyone, but to have something challenging to acquire it. Maybe not something as crazy as that quest line, but something that still takes a massive amount of effort.
Also the best tinfoil hat theory on its addition? Ion Hazzikostas himself is a Scarab Lord. He just wanted an extra mount to his collection! lol
these kids need to go somewhere with there crying, either drop the game and go to Minecraft or another MMO or just shut up and let it be

that "small group" should be rewarded. most of the scarab lords were the most dedicated players of the best guilds of their servers in 2006.
I was lucky enough to finish the scepter before the cataclysm happened. It was a great fun quest line.

Oh god... the 4:1 alliance to horde ratio had me farming wailing caverns for wool cloth for soooooo long
i doubt any of these kids now would be up for something like this and would go to the forums to complain about how long and hard it is and that they can only play for a few hours due to whatever reason

Nobbel, what are your thoughts on what will happen to the order halls? Seems weird that you were the best of the best in your class and had so many respect you and follow you, to now only just go and ditch everything you built to fight for the alliance and horde again. What do you think?

Vanilla was tedious if nothing else...
Yes it's tedious but its so fucking cool, just imagine being the first in the world to ring that gong to open a raid that nobody has seen yet and getting a legendary mount. especially when legendaries were fucking legendaries, not what they are now.
I took part in getting one of our players the mount and it was a brilliant quest line even though the reward was for only one guy(only person on the server who finished it) who I don't think played again after vanilla.... oh well!

wrong. that quest was epic as fuck. and yes tedious. not nothing else. if u can't be entertained by that level of questing back in the early 2000s your just spoiled by intense chemical rushes from modern gaming
well to be fair though, there was no other continent out before this so yall needed stuff to do in Vanilla otherwise you would have ran out of stuff to do and would have lost interest and Blizz would have lost subs, now that we have TBC, WTHLK, CATA, MOP, WOD and Legion, yeah now it would seem like something that wouldnt be worth it if you wanted to explore and look at all this other stuff

i know they're supposed to be big, and scary, but everytime i see an old god, i keep thinking of lemon slices, and cocktail sauce lol.
All this new focus on silithus makes me wonder if they gonna rework the raid to BFA?
well mounts are limited to event but hopefuling the rare silithids become tamable though, only red one is i really want the green one in new silithus revamped by sargeras big long sword!
What i really started to wonder is why are the sky in Ahn'qiraj suddenly a dark space as that of caverns of time? It makes it look so odd, like its a simulation or twisted universe dislocated from azeroth
I think bringing back the original event once a year would be fine, still super rare but do able.
I thought of commenting this to Nobbel's newest video to up my chances of getting an answer. I want to know Anduin Lothar's story but Nobbel hasn't made a video on him. But I'm sure he is bound to appear in other characters' stories so I want to know: Which video or videos of Nobbel should I check to get some story on Anduin Lothar?
Xal The Nobbel videos I could best recommend for pieces of Anduin Lothar's story is in the Khadgar videos and the Alleria and Turalyon videos. Unfortunately, while Lothar is a huge character lore wise, not much is known about him from before the first orc invasion.

Dethecus server the Guild called Saga opened our Scarab Wall. I was too focused on the Plaguelands at the time.
What the fuck was wrong with Classic. That quest line sounds absolutely insane! I do not have that type of patience in me

I don't mind that I'll never have the mount, even if I did I don't see myself using it at all. What's important to remember is that it's not a small number of players receiving the updated model, it's more like 0. How many people actually rang the gong, and how many people STILL PLAY? 1 person? I'd have a hard time believing 2 people still have the mount and play. Vanilla was such a massively different game that many of the players who were around at the start don't like the current game and left years ago.
omygodsword I think that's one reason why people are a bit mixed on the new model, since so few from back then actually still play. Many feel it's a waste of resources from what I've heard. I've never ever seen the black battle tank in game, and have only ever seen one Scarab Lord in my nearly seven years of playing, and I saw that Scarab Lord back in late Cata. But I'm not bothered by their decision since I wasn't even around back then.

I can't help but wonder if the new qiraji mount is to separate those who earned it back in vanilla, and those who will earn it on classic servers. You get both if you already have it, but only get the old one if you earn it on classic, or something like that.
Does it really matter? I highly doubt that the Classic servers will in any way connect to the current servers. I also highly doubt the gaming community of today would work together for such a long tedious questline to reward 1 person
While you have a point, and I generally agree with it. It still makes me wonder if they are planning on making things earned in classic apply to your wow account for live, so we may see more hunters with Rhok'delar, more benediction, and possibly more scarab lords.
Soon you might have the chance at the Scarab mount again!

I tend to avoid Slithus because it is too ugly. For high level zones I go with Un Goro Crater and WInterspring. I am amazed by the cool story in Silithus. There is even an old god. It is an example of don't judge a book by its cover. That questline is really complicated. It makes modern questlines look like a cakewalk.
It would make sense to update the mounts if the Vanilla Server uses the new Models because people might get the chance to earn them again.
Anyone else notice that the Doctor Weavil character is a reference to Weavil from theYugioh tv show? Weavil throws the cards and the doctor throws the pages from a book
Don't know why the old gods don't use the bugs more, They seem to be just as dangerous as the scourge with how fast they populate.

About the updated black quiraji mount: What if with WoW Classic there will be a feature to carry over now unobtainable items to the main game such as mounts, pets and transmogs.

Anyone else hoping for a resurgence of the Insects? A true Nerubian attack to retake their underground empire from the weakened Undead, the Mantid with their new Queen harassing the Pandarians, and the Aquir infused with Demonic fel energies?

Tin foil out. Alexstrazsa is the only Dragon Aspect that hasn't knowingly been corrupted and/or been killed. If she dies this expansion, maybe this is the 5th torch that lights the way ala Xal'atath. Picking off the Dragon Aspects who were part of the Charge of the Dragonflights could be a lead up to C'Thun returning.
I'm predicting that the end of BfA will be very heavily Old God themed, with a possible return of both C'Thun and Yogg'Saron (pre patch questline into Ulduar showed some Faceless beings and Old God murmurings) along with N'Zoth finally showing himself. Hell, the final patch/raid could even be in Ny'alotha. There's just too much pointing us to this fact. Especially the explicit line from Alleria of how she felt like she already died twice!
I feel like it will be a slow build up and the final boss might be C'Thun or Yogg Saron leading into an Old God expansion. Sort of like Archimonde in WoD leading into Legion.
In relation to Alleria, I feel like these predictions have multiple meanings. She has dies twice. Sylvannas has died twice. Azeroth has died twice. 'King of Diamonds' could be both Magni and Gallywix. 'Five torches' the 5 pillars of creation and the 5 dragon aspects.
Eh, Sylvannas has already died 3 times though. Once to Arthas, once when she killed herself by throwing herself off Ice Crown after Arthas was defeated and another by Lord Godfry in the Silverpine ques line. As for an entire Old God themed expansion? BfA could secretly be one. The whole start of the battle between Horde and Alliance is over the blood of the planet itself, and Azshara has been confirmed as final boss of the first tier, and she's tied pretty closely to the Old Gods, especially N'Zoth.
Quick unralated question... I'm playing a character in the eastern plagueis for after a long long time and I just made some quests in Zul'Mashar... What about that city and its inhabitants? They are mostly alive but up to something and their leader is called "Betrayer" by the troll now who joins you in the caravan... What's up there? It's not explained during the quests...
