- THE WOOFERS ARE PLAYING THE ENTIRE TIME IN THIS VIDEO. Jason from Schiit Audio listened to the new Magnepan Woofer prototype at the Texas Audio Roundup. This video captures his reactions.
I did allow sound to be captured here, although I do not believe it is a valid representation of what was heard, nor ever is in cases like this. However, in this case I do think it gives you as viewers a good depiction of what was going on in the room with these woofers particularly. Now I will say, when this was uploaded to TH-cam, it appears TH-cam did not pick up all the frequencies that this video was able to reproduce before having been uploaded.

Wow, the first run of music ... or drums...was not nearly as effective as the second. The second was incredible! I do understand that the first had some odd high notes or "clicks" to show the speakers range, but WOW.... the second was huge even through my phone running through the car stereo! Wonderful symphony 🥰

The paradox for Schiit is that those dipole woofers are driven by Class-D amps and a evidently need their input signal digitized if a DSP is involved. Where does that put Schiit's analog signal path in the end ? To drive the LRS I guess, but judging by the fact there were off during (at least the first part) of the demo, and no one had realized ; there's a... situation here.
Well, you'd hear the difference because the woofers "only" go to 10 kHz. So it will sound better with the LRS -- the point is that the woofers are so wideband you can almost use them full range!
at the end every signal is analog, speakers are analog
Took me a while to realise these are LRS sized panels used as woofers (aren't they?) & rolled off at a high 10'Khz for awoofer, (it's almost full range for a man of my age) When the LRS came out, i heard 3 guys on a tube vid talk about it's sound & I wrote a comment to that Canadian hi-fi dealers tube vid as they they had interviewed Wendell. My comment asked them "why doesn't Magnepan make a same sized single pannel pair rolled off at circa' 300 or 350'Hz to stand next to the LRS's & add an extra 3'db in that range, the bass & richness zone' If I understood this vid correctly. Don't know why 1 guy said he 'thought it was the LRS playing' if he knew what was going on & I don't know why Wendel answered by leaning over & nodding towards the amps saying "no, you can see they're not turned on" ...because there was only 1 pair there, that still confuses me, because where were the LRS's if the only single pair I saw were the woofers, because Wendell could then have just said "The LRS"s aren't even here instead of pointing to the switched off LRS amp. Or maybe I got it all wrong & the woofers are invisible or behind that curtain
Other way around -- the LRS+'s aren't connected, you're listening to the new wideband dipole woofers -- you can see one to the right of the right hand LRS+, it's a small triangular tower.
"Taiko" is the Japanese term you were going for. Koto is a stringed instrument.
I think they were saying the band was Kodo. They play taiko drums mostly

So, the classic piece that starts at 8:40...was that WITH the LRS's added, or not? --Also, the camera person should have gone back there and showed a close-up view of the woofers.

May I suggest a low cut filter at 100hz to make the audio sound less muffled… maybe add some highs, mids…

Your suggestion is a good one. I recently found that the best option (at least for someone who likes deep bass, and an extra oompth in the midbass, is to use a crossover at 200hz to push 200+ to the panel Maggies. Then, 75 to 200 for the woofers. And, 75 and below to a conventional subwoofer. That is what I thought sounded the most full-bodied, at least.

Having owned multiple Magnepan’s, and currently own two pairs… I have no idea what’s going on in this video. It’s confusing and I want to understand.
It's just a demo of the new wideband dipole woofers. The panels aren't playing at all.

The factory was six months behind thanks to high demand and labor shortages. They're caught up now so I imagine they'll be back in stock soon.

I'm thoroughly confused: Are the two speakers in the room the LRS+ or are they the new woofer? Or are they both? Or are the LRS+ silent displays and the woofer is elsewhere in the room?
The two speakers are the LRS+. The woofer is the little triangular thing behind the whatever it is. The LRS+'s had their amp off -- this was just a demo of the woofers.
Any idea as to IF or WHEN the Magnepan woofers would be available?

No idea. Wendell said this is kind of like a concept car right now, that needs to get enough interest to continue the endeavor. I think he is still working on touring it around to get a fan base of the woofers. But that would be more of a question for Wendell and Magnepan. I think it’s still too early to consider being able to buy it any time soon, from what I found out later on.

These are in production engineering now, hard to know when they'll be rolling off the assembly line. These are also the expensive woofers for higher end models -- there will be a range, but they're starting with the flagship.
I guess they will be available after I will be dead, so by now I' m enjoying my 3.7i with a Velodyne DD18

Cynthia, as you can tell from many of the comments, it is very important to tell listeners (viewers) what the system is doing. I suggest that next time you say, for example,
“We are listening to a cd of Kodo….(etc) through an Emotiva xxx preamp’s balanced outputs to Schiit Vidar amps run as monoblocks. Each drives a Magnepan dipole woofer in a tower array. The Vidars output 400 watts into 8 ohms in this way.”
I am still guessing at this point. I still don’t know which woofers we were listening to! The LRS has a woofer panel and a tweeter panel. Were there separate woofer enclosures along the wall? Were they run under their own power or by the Vidars? If the latter, why were the Vidars in the middle instead of by each speaker? Were the Vidars vertically biamped instead of run as balanced monoblocks? The answers actually matter a lot.
Still, the news is important, and thanks from lassoing Jason and putting him through testing hell, it’s fun to watch! 😃

I've attended this demo in Toronto recently. Wendell played the subwoofers with a single stereo Vidar amp. He later played the LRS+ on its own, with the other single stereo Vidar amp. I can attest to how impressive the subwoofers are in person. Extremely tight, dynamic and loud with an iron grip. I'm not sure why he couldn't use a x-over so we could have heard the entire system together. But something tells me that the subwoofer won't be the same bargain that the LRS+ is.
does the schiit have a project to make ... speakers, perhaps?

Hotel rooms are often horrible for demonstrating audio equipment haha. Audio shows use hotel rooms at conferences to demonstrate equipment though. You kind of have to sift through the sound of the room to understand what the product sounds like. Oftentimes the mids will be over-accentuated. So a lot of the audio show comes down to "eye candy".

I am slightly confused - these are subwoofers, and yet they are playing up to about 10kHz? How do they integrate with the main speakers if they play up that high? Or, is the DSP set up differently when they are used as subs, with the main speakers?

The crossover limits response. They won't be playing up to 10 kHz in a system. But to get "fast" bass, a woofer has to be matched precisely in amplitude and phase to the midrange above the crossover point until it's down 20 dB, and that means that extended woofer response is important, and that requires extended response -- though you don't need response to 10 kHz.
To me the bass drum from the orchestra sounds blurred and ill defined compared to what i'm used to from my full range electrostatics playing a Telarc LP.
Demoed with a Schiit Freya S preamp, to the guy who designed it.
Great video. Too secretive. It seems these subwoofers offer double bass and midbass. They may not measure as well that way but appear to sound good. You can not tell if the LRS are on because the material are drums. The fact that so little information is given makes me think one could mimic this setup.

Funny you ask that. I recently had the opportunity to EQ them with my MiniDSP. While doing so, I found out they only go down to about 75hz. That might not be bad for someone who likes extra oomph in the midbass. But if you like the deep bass of a conventional, monopole subwoofer....that's another story.

It is, and it's overloading. It's never going to sound good on TH-cam.
sounds exactly the same as the 35 year old speakers i got now. What are my chances of getting the guy in Toronto, that's had these in stock for years, to stop doubling the price every 18 months??
how can you say they sound the same as your speakers listening to a youtube video? Its impossible to tell unless you are there in person hearing them.
If I was running the Schiit company I would change the name to "Schijt" with the Dutch pronunciation sounding like "Shite".

They hardly ever are at the events, being in hotel rooms. Exhibitors have to bring their own absorbers/diffusers to help with the sound. You also have to be choosy about the size of the hotel room you select, as a manufacturer. I’ve noticed with Magnepan and the LRS, they always select a small, more intimate room because that’s where that speaker sounds the best. The LRS+ in my larger living room didn’t quite fill the room like it needed to.
So the events are fun, you get to meet people and see different products in person. But the rooms may not all be optimal and sometimes due to that the sound of a system has to be taken with a grain of salt.

I do not understand..
1. All agree to that LRS needs a subwoofer
2. The demo guy say the subwoofer goes to 10 000 Hz And it is no point to run them WITH the LRS because of that reason.
Then he tells that he needs to roll off the subwoofer lower to use it with the LRS..
So there was no point with this demonstration. When the point were to that the subwoofer helps the LRS to play full range. And that were not demonstrated.
So nobody knows how the subwoofers blend with LRS.
Why do this? If they set up the subwoofers and made a cross over where the LRS naturally roll off in the bass. Then it is just to play them all and engage and disengage the subwoofers..
That is the real test and how they're going to be used! The LRS do not need help to play frequencies up to 10 000 Hz.. just wasted time for all that is involved. And who is helped from him that he played the subwoofers and thought 2-3 times he were listening to the LRS.. ..waste of time if not they are trying to sell the subwoofer as product without any other drivers..
The real reason why that might not been done like it should been done as in the real world use case is that then the guy need to measure that room in the different listing positions with the positions the subwoofers has. Plus put in delays/alignment with the mains/LRS. And on top of that choose what crossover slopes, types and at what frequency..
And load all that into the DSP...
Had he time and knowledge to do that a proper demonstration.

I know the stuff and what knowledge level is required. When I exactly use magnapans with two 18" open baffle hooked up to a DSP that are calibrated with delays, crossover for example.
I have a similar system, i.e. LRSs with two dipole 18" subs....I'm not sure what your criticism is. The point about playing to 10K is not do actually do that, but to make the point that the woofers are fast enough to merge well with the LRS+s. Given the location of the subs in the video, the crossover can't be higher than about 80hz, or there would be soundstage issues.
I think youre missing something here - These are not subwoofers per se but are Woofers. I believe the intent is not to add these to a full range speaker but to build future full range speakers around this woofer negating the need for a sub woofer.

It is almost easier for then to put a super Tweeter (or something) to fill in the last octave.
Than sell 4 speakers that needs DSP adjustments, delays, crossover points and slopes. That kind of system will be >90% less attractive to a very narrow market segment..
(With saying that I use "two dipole 18" subs" were only to tell to those that know that a OB (dipole) is faster than a box generally are, that with over pressure and under pressure slow down the cone movement when it is in a box. But there is other drawbacks as less efficient, and benefits.)

Zero room treatment, sub optimal seating placement, early reflections with phase correlation issues and these folks want to talk critically about the 'sound' of these. They aren't hearing the speakers, they are hearing the room. Food for thought.
Well, more like a real world living room. But one of the things about dipoles is that they're less sensitive to room acoustics than conventional speakers. It's why dipole bass sounds better than point source bass -- smoother response in a real room. Anyway, it's a demo at a show, no way to make everything ideal!
Now play a busy track on them. They can’t do that well.
Why not try to make Magnapans specifacally for bass
They have planar woofers, the DWM, but they aren't as capable -- most of the area of a planar panel is devoted to bass. That's why they used dynamic drivers, which have a higher excursion.

Mostly, it has to do with the difference between monopole and dipole speakers. Monopole subwoofers can push an immense amount of pressure. Dipoles cannot, unless the engineer/designer were to make them to be quite large.

Well....they still had to use cone drivers to accomplish it. The woofers go down to around 75hz. So if you want bass extension below that....well....you will still need a conventional subwoofer.

With all due respect, these are NOT Magnepans with Bass, they are Magnepans with Subwoofers. Something us Maggie fans have been doing for 15 years. It's not "all new technology" lol as Wendell says. Well perhaps DSP is "all new" for Wendell.
FINALLY Magnepan has embraced the inevitable. The dynamic driver. We brought them there by flipping the users that heard our rigs with subs. I've been preaching for years Magnepan is a mid/high panel. Sure it will DO bass, but only in a non dynamic way. Shiit guy thinks it's impossible to integrate a dynamic driver with a dipole panel. Clearly he's never tried. I do it WITHOUT DSP even. And I teach how to do it as well. Magnepan is so stuck in its old ways it takes this long to add something as rudimentary as a dynamic driver to the mix. Something Martin Logan, Wisdom Audio, Apogee, Bob Carver, and others were combining in the 80s... I get the video is on reactions.. it's just kind of funny these are new reactions to old tech. I'm glad the "movers and shakers" of business are coming to functional audio realizations !! Kudos!! Thanks for your video !!
Those aren't Maggies at all, they're just playing the woofers. None of the speakers you mention equal the integration and quality of the new Maggie sub. They'd tried making hybrids over the years in the lab, but they didn't equal the quality of planar panels of similar extension. I had a small role in designing these and it wasn't easy to get dynamic woofers to sound as good as planar woofers of equal extension. These woofers are dipoles and they use multiple small drivers, because 10" and 12" drivers don't sound as good. It would not have been practical to make a dipole woofer before DSP because you need dipole equalization.
