From what the detective was able to find out it'll be his work against hers, and who would believe him?

I’m sure most were honest but not all of them were. A scammer would pretend to be a wealthy widower looking for companionship. Their target was wealthy widows. They would love them, steal their money then leave them.
Russell Collins as the detective wasn't one of the leads, but he steals the show, especially with his twist punch line at the end.
These actors of this age were wickedly good.
Hitch always took pains to cast the best people in his films and TV shows. Few of his shows were miscast.
