Ok, this is the rice hack I've needed. I'm 66 years old and have always struggled with gooey rice. Tried this last night and can hardly believe how wonderful it turned out! Now for a batch of my favorite black beans to go with it😁 Thanks for the video.
Recent new subscriber here. I just LOVE the "dry-ass" way you explain things(kinda like Charles Grodin, whom you remind me of)!!! Makes me laugh, and keeps me thoroughly involved everytime!!! Keep up the GREAT video's!!!
Yes! You nailed it. That’s who Dillon reminds me of too. It’s like curbed enthusiasm, but you get hooked on all of the great info, and I end up watching every video, even on the things I thought I wouldn’t be interested in. Thank you Dillon for being an honest, encouraging person and for the great info-tainment!
Yes! This is sooo much easier than the method of having to get the water to rice ratio perfect, cover, watch out for boiling over, etc. I don’t worry about too many nutrients being lost by draining the cooking water, since it’s whole grain, rather polished nutrient-stripped white rice. I love short, or medium, brown rice. It’s wonderfully chewy. I started cooking rice this way when I read that this method is the most effective for removing whatever arsenic might be present.
As always, I watch your videos 2x - the first time is for my guilty pleasure of just giggling along with your humor . The 2nd is when I get serious and get the value of your work ( ok, so it might be the 3rd time ... ) ;) xo
Perfect recipe -- thanks so much! Tastes all the guess work out, even if you are just doing 2 cups of brown rice (where I add 6 cups water). I like to use filtered water and that is at a premium for me (using a Berkey), so I use all I need and no more. Six cups for 2 cups of rice was perfect, at least at my sea level (Austin, TX).
Thanks for this great lesson on rice. I have heard about cooking rice in a lot of water but didn't understand how it was done. While I generally use my Instant Pot for rice, your method is not really any more work or time overall. It looks like the cooked texture is an alternate way/taste for the rice. Very cool.
I was at my nieces' house and made sushi rice with quinoa using this method for the first time. I forgot to boil the water ahead of time, so I only cooked it at boiling for 10 minutes. It was perfect. I was pleasantly surprised. Thank you. Back home now and can't wait to try this method with brown rice tomorrow.
I always soak it overnight. On the next day I drain it and replace the water with fresh one for cooking (1 C of rice 1 C of water). It takes way less time to cook (10 min. and then switch off the burner and leave it 5-10 min. on the stove top).
Sandra Carli Thank you so much for that! Not vegan or even vegetarian but I like adding new things the the menu. I’m allergic to eggs but made tornado eggs for my husband and the brown rice mound took forever to make. This also helps with brown rice for dinner. Wtf did we do before TH-cam?
My mom used to make rice this way, pasta style. I learned, in my macrobiotic days, to use a pressure cooker or the evaporation/absorption method. Now I still do that because it's so easy. 2 cups of rice, well washed. Cover with cold water to 1/2 inch above the rice. Cover. Bring to a boil. Turn down to a simmer and cook for 40 min. I just set a timer and walk away. I wonder how many, if any, nutrients are lost by straining the cooking water out of it. I like that your rice is separated and fluffy. Thanks for posting.
I tried this method. and it came out pretty good, even though I forgot to get the water boiling first. I threw in the race and water all at once. Next time I will try to remember to get the water boiling before adding the rice.
Interesting method! I personally haven't had an issue cooking brown rice.....maybe because I use brown basmati? hmmm I don't know. I do have problems cooking sushi rice quite often though. I think I'll experiment with this method on that. Thanks for the video!
After cooking the rice and before the 10-minute steam, you could sauté the veggies and spices and then add in the drained rice, and then cover it and steam for the 10 minutes, maybe with a few tablespoons of water to assist the steam, unless the drained rice still has some cooking water in it to add to that.
Thank you Dillon. I'm trying this with the same exact rice. I've actually tried this method, but didn't include the steaming time at the end so my rice turned out too wet. The 10mn steam must be key and this method is recommended for removing the most arsenic so that is great also. Do you use the same method for long grain brown like basmati or jasmine?
Glad you mentioned this. Yes the steam is important to dry out the rice. Use a tight fitting lid if possible and go as long as 20 minutes steam if you want. Yes I’ve used the same method for all brown (whole) rice and it should work that way for you. But you can always vary the boil time slightly until you find the texture you enjoy most.
@@kaylarodriguez2005 Yes, in a large pot of water just like you do with pasta and then strain. You can test it after 10 minutes. If you want it softer, boil a little longer, but it should be done within 15 minutes. So easy and turns out perfect every time. Huge time saver, too.
Finally tried this method for brown rice & it was a success! Perfect! I used organic long grain & wasn’t sure if I had the simmer part high enough so cooked it about 5 mins extra 👍🏻 Thanks Dillon!
Thumbs up video, having a ready supply of cooked rice makes all the difference. Great to see how you cook it to make it with the grains nicely separated. I use a very low energy use thermal method which is more like sticky rice, but only takes 5 minutes on the stove. I was looking up rice after watching this and found Ricepedia.org :-). That freeze-dried rice sounds like a great snack, yum.
I will try this. I usually cook my brown basmati rice for 10 minutes and it comes out perfect tho. Basmati is the best for retaining the individual grains.
Wow..never thought of cooking rice this way. Brilliant! Thank you for sharing. Im5new to your channel and really enjoy learning from you. I also appreciate your no nonsense approach...and dry sarcasm.
Just discovered this channel -so funny. Good to see as it's the only way I know how to cook rice thou friends think its crazy instead of the usual 2 to 1 and walk away - done. Never had much luck with that. Will be following!!
I'm going to try this. I love that big pot but could never lift it once filled with water. Also, I love your bowls. I plan to replace some ancient stainless bowls. Where did you get them?
Great video this is the best method for making brown rice just like pasta. Also is it possible to drink the rice water since its S.O.S. free or use it in a vegan dessert with dates and possibly make some rice pudding in the oven or use the rice water and oats in the vitamix to make rice oat milk. I just love how you use your veggie scraps to make veggie stock and now that I am going to make my brown rice this way instead of the evaporated way you gave me the idea of not wasting some of this rice water.
Dr. Greger says this is the best way to cook rice to remove any excess arsenic as rice is notorious for this. When I think of it that way, my inclination is to dump the water. But I agree totally with your logic on this; it makes sense to want to use this rich water, but I think pouring it out may technically be the best bet unfortunately.
Thank you for this video! I like to mix organic quinoa and brown basmati rice but I'll get this organic short grain brown rice from Costco and it'll probably last forever. Do you have a recipe for a quinoa-brown rice mixture, or is it better to cook them separately and then mix them? I would probably also add in a mixture of 2-3 lentils with spices to have a one-pot meal and cook the veggies separately.
Nice! I’m not sure because quinoa takes so much less time than Brown rice. But if you like the texture then ya go for it. I love rice and lentils and spices mixed together like Indian spices. Ahhh.
omg thats genuis! and i always just followed the directions. i never minded if white rice came out mushy/sticky. I always avoided brown rice because i thought it was just mushy. thanks for making me love brown rice! LOL my mom says she does the same. #NotInTheDarkAnymore haha
Ok yes I can do that. Thanks for the support. In the next few weeks (I'm going on record now!) I hope to have at least something freeze dried for sale.
It's funny when I moved to England I noticed all the rice packages said to cover with water, boil then drain , I was confused...I always measured out my water etc.. I'll try your way next time., which includes the steaming bit at the end.
if you realy want to realy improve the taste of the brown rice is put some apple viniger with the coooking about 1 tsp on one cup of rice. ti gives the rice a great taste

This method of pouring out the excess cook-water probably also removes much of the contaminates and anti-nutrients that may be in the outer bran of the rice.

Wow the Instant Pot would save you so much time. Its a MUST for easy, fast, plant based meals.
I love the instant pot. I just haven’t managed to make 100% perfect brown rice in it. I’m sure it’s just me...
I FINALLY make perfect brown rice after all these years! Thank you!
I can’t thank you enough for sharing this foolproof way of cooking brown rice! I done it this way 3 times now: perfect, fluffy rice!!

Yea but if you’re worried about arsenic lvls you’re method doesn’t help with that I don’t believe unless we could still cook it in a similar ratio

I like the cover by 1/2 inch thing rather than going by a set amount of water ratio. Good thinking
Great method for brown rice I have seen. Finally, I think I’ll be able to make perfect brown rice! Thanks Dillon🌸
Thank you!!
Instant Pot + Rice = Life🙌🏻
YES!!!!! 10 mins to rice :) I can't live without Instant Pot!!!!
I agree! Love my instant pot!
Pressure cooking rice is the best. It also kills the aflatoxin on brown rice!
Do you do the absorption method in the ipot or this spaghetti method?
I can't get my brown rice to turn out in mine, so this is a great video!
I tried this method. and it came out pretty good, even though I forgot to get the water boiling first. I threw in the race and water all at once. Next time I will try to remember to get the water boiling before adding the rice.

The pasta method of cooking brown or white rice has always worked out for me
wish I could give this 2 thumbs up. It has been a game changer for me. Thank you so much for sharing this simple method.
The Princess Bride! The end clips are the best part! But I can't wait to try your method. 😃
If you soak the rice over night, it only takes half the time to boil and no need to steam. Plus, it eliminates most of the shhhh.....aresenic. :P

I cook my rice as I cook pasta. When it’s done I drain and throw arsenic down the drain. Perfect every time.

I've used this method and I like it, especially since it answers any concerns over arsenic!
Dalyn, all rice is naturally gluten-free :)
exactly, I thought it was funny that they put that on the bag.
How long it takes to Freeze Dry? and the answer to your last question: The Princess Bride.
Nice. Freeze drying is time consuming. One load takes almost 2 days.
I have given up cooking brown rice. I’ve used just about every method out there (this one included) and it’s always sticky. I just stick to parboiled white rice and it comes out light and fluffy every time - IF I go with a little less water than the bags say to use AND cook it 2 minutes less.
Don't give up! You can always use frozen brown rice, it's around the same price as dry brown rice.
good video! I It was particularly interesting that the rice was from California and was free of Contaminants etc. thank you very much ! 😁👍
Since Dr Greger made that series on rice and arsenic, I've been avoiding it like the plague. But I noticed nobody else is. I miss rice. lol
The type of rice from my video plus the cooking method is apparently the best you can do to reduce the arsenic issue so I’d go for it.
Have some rice and be merry.
Oh yes, Dr. Greger drove us all to crazy distraction with that series. I felt like I had lost my best friend (rice), but I buy quality rice and stopped fretting.
PS) Now I am going to have that scene in my head from Princess Bride - and the voice -- great, jussssst great !!!

Try the Instant Pot. Neither brown rice nor beans get any easier, faster or better!
What’s up with the comment about arsenic? I’m new here.
No prob. Do a quick TH-cam search for Dr. Greger’s explanation on arsenic and brown rice. It’s kind of a long story and he says it best. His channel is called nutrition facts dot org.
I hate mushy rice, so I will be making it this way.

Do exactly this and it’s perfect.
Do you lose a lot of nutrients with the pouring out of the water?
No, actually Dr. Greger says this is the safest way to cook the rice because it actually helps clear out any residual arsenic from the soil/growing process.
Thanks, and decided to subscribe.
LOL princess bride!

I just soak the rice overnight and drain it.
The princes bride lol!!!!
