Unless John manages to save a lot more than $30,000 before he comes back, I am afraid he is going to be in pickle again before too long. He needs to get his family stateside and find another job to suppliment his SSI for awhile. Maybe later on they can return to the Philippines in a much better financial situation. This is my humble suggestion. Good luck and best regards to John and his family no matter what choice he makes. 😃

I didn't know John was a stroke victim. That explains a lot. I think he generated a lot of hate mail because his story was framed as a poor expat being taken advantage by a poor Filipina who stole his money. There was a lot more to the story, including his 2 strokes. Glad he returned to the USA & turned his life around for the better. John seems to now have realistic, positive, attainable goals.

You're a true legend, Paul. And you should be commended for your part in creating the legend of Expat John, which was FULL of lessons for everyone in and out of the Philippines. Lessons about life, love and the community. John's experience, while tragic, was the ultimate story of redemption. And while you helped him, I don't think you should feel bad for what his story did to help you and your channel. You don't know how many other people you might have helped through this story, but all the other stories you tell. Expat John helped you reach and help more people. I can't help but feel that you're a little miffed about the popularity of John and his story on your channel, like a rock star who dislikes his biggest hit song or the TV star who dislikes being typecast in their most popular role. You're just both so relatable, albeit in different ways. I'm sure people will keep asking about him, but maybe in the future John can have his own channel enabling him to have his own income stream! I'm thankful for folks like you telling it like it is.

Good to hear that he's getting it together. I hope he can continue and that his plans come to fruition without him crumbling from what sounds like a lot of pressure. Well done John and thanks for the update Paul.. Since th last few videos on John, I have often wondered how he's faring. The fact that he's doing so much now must I've him a sense of dignity, which in turn will probably help him enormously to reach his goal.
I'm currently in Leyte - my second trip here. Next week I'll leave the country for a fortnight in Vietnam and will return for another no visa 30 days. I'm half thinking of taking a trip to Dumaguete where so many of you vloggers seem to be.

No matter what the situation is, some people will always find something to criticize. They have a pessimistic attitude and see everything in a bad light. Sadly, we often pay more attention to the few negative comments than to the many positive ones. We need to learn to tune out most of the negativity and preserve our positivity.

Thanks Paul for the Expat John update! I may of missed the issue of when it was that John was going to get to the point where he was going to collect SS and return to the Philippines. As you well know, make sure he gets his SS started and has a few checks under his belt before coming back. Your videos from the other expats that have had those SS issues and trying and getting them fixed from the Philippines is more frustration than it is worth. Thanks for the update on John and for all your great vlogs!

@@mcluvin65, well I grew up in the Midwest during the 60s and 70s and people just cared about each other more than now. I am a bisexual man so I have felt different all my life and experienced my own discrimination growing up and as an adult. I finally married an incredible Filipino man 5 years ago after meeting online way back in 2004. It could have gone terribly wrong like it did for John, but I was fortunate enough to bring him here and he has worked hard ever since he got here. We will retire to our house in the Philippines in 6 years. He still wants us to come back to Las Vegas so he can work 6 months out of the year. Again, I was very fortunate, but some are not. I think we all need to be more understanding and less judgmental.

He has a good future ahead, thanks to his strong will and the previous help he received from you and the other people. John should be cognizant of staying healthy, and maybe he is, so he can continue to meet his goals.
