I would like to recomend two events to Rick. The first is in Hungary, called the "Borvidék félmaraton" (wine region half marathon) at the end of May, it is what it says on the packet, a half marathon with the feed stations at wine cellars, all in preparation for Marathon du Medoc.
So glad the rubber duck made it to the TRC offices. I'm sure it can be a half-marathon duck too 😅. Rick, be sure to take it along if you are ever sharing a hotel room with Andy again.
I get your reservations regards doing a Hyrox event only because like you hadn't heard of them until I was persuaded to sign-up for one. The story starts with someone at our little social run club who mentioned they'd entered a local Hyrox (non affiliated) event as a pair but their partner dropped out 2 months before. She had specifically chosen as it was days before her 50th birthday hence was extremely disappointed. Well silly me told her that if she had no other options I would step up as her new partner. Ok, I'm several years older and not a gym goer but had just finished Manchester half in 1:45 so thought how hard could it be? With only 5 weeks to go we managed 2 training sessions so I could at least try some of the activities. Wallballs, utter nightmare, jumping Burpees torture; did 50 of each without the other exercises and the panic set in. After our 2nd session we were hoping just to finish but set a target of not being last. On the day we loaded with caffeine and sugar, got pumped with crowd and loud music before being joining the final wave. Oh my yes the running is the recovery, the feats of strength activities were brutal. We were the last to finish so we sprinted nearly the entire last 1km. After we finished are faced showed more joy than pain. Yet we were in for a bigger surprise as it was in waves we'd managed overtake some of the earlier contestants and finished 3rd from last. Holy moly that made the aching muscles feel so much better. Even though I pulled muscles in my neck and shoulder, she damaged her left hamstring. Not planning on doing another hyrox ever... but she has sign-up for her first marathon. Trust me she on her own for that one.
Thank you for the shout out for training in the winter! It’s a frozen, snowy wasteland in Colorado, USA, so I will be doing my long run on a treadmill. The shout out was a nice bit of encouragement to get it done today!
I have been doing Crossfit for 5 years now: it improved my running so much: no more running related injuries, more stamina in general. Plus it is just so much fun to learn new things such as Olympic weightlifting or gymnastics. And become stronger an fitter. So from me a thumbs up to sports like Crossfit or Hyrox. Love your channel!!
I feel Sarah so much on the comment of being so motivated but being injured/sick. I have a pretty decent ankle sprain rn from skiing but want to get out and do something so bad! Hello to yall from Colorado!
Did my first ever half last Sunday in at 7:30am in -6 degree conditions. Everywhere looked spectacular all frozen....I even ended up with an iced up beard! 😂😂😂 My 2025 goals were to run a half distance and go under 2hrs at some point....managed both with a 1hr 58 🎉 Thats me done for this year then! 😂😂😂 Keep up all the great content folks! ❤
I'd gladly join the Running Channel team to do a Hyrox. I certainly think that going from CrossFit to Hyrox has greatly improved my running ability and endurance. I will do the pairs with Sarah 😃
It is currently 26 and feels like 30 degrees Celsius at 6am where I live in Australia with humidy over 90%, it sure makes your HR spike even on easy runs.
I agree that training for Hyrox has a high impact on your running. During my intense Hyrox training within the four month training block on the leadup to the event, I inadvertently PB'd my 5K, 10Mile and Half Marathon times.
I am a crossfitter turned marathon runner who currently trains with a Hyrox group once a week. Lemme tell you, I cracked up on my long run yesterday listening to Rick say "whats a wall...ballll?" 😅 I guess I take for granted that these movements aren't actually basic and well known by all. I am only at the start of my training for Spring marathon but I can already feel that the Hyrox style training has made me stronger. I like that it includes faster paced running and usually the workouts we do are lengthy and get your heart rate jacked. I would definitely recommend runners incorporate those movements in training. Everyone always tells me I would be great at Hyrox because I can do all the movements well and I'm fast. However, it sounds like the most boring thing I can imagine. I'm sure those people feel that way about marathons but at least you have beautiful scenery and variation of the course. Sounds like once you've done one Hyrox you've done them all. Snooze
I feel your pain Sarah, on an ultra training block, base phase finished about to start the build up and feeling so so strong then BOOM lurgy... Currently feeling very sorry for myself.. Thankfully walking is still OK but yes... Missing my running and gutted that I don't get to do sprint session and threshold this week BUT plus side, I have learnt to rest and not push through untill body destroyed... Its only taken me 10 years to learn this 🎉
On the 2 lap marathon. Blackpool marathon while potentially quick is 2 laps plus the quirk that the marathon goes one way on the promenade while the half that starts at the same time goes the opposite direction. The marathon then doubles back and joins the half on the main road. Then it’s weaving through the half marathon runners till you find space. 😂
I'm aiming to hit the only nearby Hyrox in 2026, didn't really learn about them until I overscheduled myself for 2025. Getting into running from an OCR original interest just means I want a lot of physical challenges with my cardio so I'm hoping to eventually do a little bit of everything. Right now I'm aiming to do my first real half in a couple weeks (did it in the neighborhood during training already) then do some speed work until we get closer to when I can run a full marathon, also have a lot of OCR sprinkled throughout my year.
Yes! thank you Andy. My mojo is completely gone. I feel so tired and heavy when running. I am not enjoying it. I really am just doing it hoping it will come back and get better.
Sorry to hear Andy's still lost his mojo for running 😢 - I remember he particularly loved the pacing TRC events e.g. pacing people to 10k PBs, so maybe he could turn up at a parkrun a week and pace as many people to a sub-20 as possible? Or even just see how many parkruns he can win himself in a certain period of time?
Hyrox is mostly running and engine. The top Hyrox athletes are objectively more runners than strength athletes by any metric. For example, top males can probably run a 15:30 5k and deadlift 400. They are way closer to the WR 5k then they are the WR deadlift. Same is true for amount of training required to run that fast at 180+lbs. Of course runners tend to downplay the amount of running in Hyrox.
When you all are talking about temps around zero that, for us in Chicago, is relatively warm. I'm facing a 13 mile run tomorrow with zero degrees fahrenheit.
Hyrox WR 53:22 pro men, 58:03 pro women. And runners aren't good automatically. I couldn't do any of the exercises but easily run the 8km in like 32min. The running is the easy part at Hyrox.
Been using hyrox style workouts to get ready for my marathon training block (running my first marathon in May), it helped increase my leg strength massively and my ability to run on tired legs, the DOMS after that first session though.... that was something else! 😬😅
If you want tips on ski erg and rowing technique, look for Mark kewis video with Eddie Hall's brother. He has world record for both at 2000m and its all technique. Its also different from what you might think.
Thank you for all the science and shenanigans. I’m sure you’ve answered this question but I’ve been sick for 2 weeks and have a 5k race for my birthday in less than a month. Once I am better, should I restart my training at where I left off or should I pick up the training at what is scheduled next? Thank you always. Hana
We wouldn't completely restart, but maybe go back a week in your training plan so your body can gradually get up to the training you've been used to. We hope you have a GREAT birthday 5k!
Maybe a fact check needed about your statement that Hyrox is the largest global mass physical event…….parkrun might be sniggering in the corner at the “massive” 90,000 participants you say Hyrox had over 1 year 😂
I will not be doing hyrox.... Sounds like hell to me, I used to do a lot of gym which involved tractor tyre pushes and all sorts 9f fun things but what with working full time and running and lifemin... Unless time stretches it's unobtainable 🎉
I was about to make the comment on how you got it easy with the winter weather in Britain, when you said it's all relative. Just get proper gear, trail shoes can be great against icy surface
@@runningchannel Not yet. HA, get someone to take it with them on a marathon run.
Hahaha we love it
Of all the presenters of TRC, Rick gives me the most inspiration. I would love the chance to run a marathon along side him if I cam keep up.
Really glad he inspires you!

Hahaha we see you Auckland!

It does. For every 3 degrees above 15, it can make your body have to work up to 20% harder to compensate for increased heat
Wow that's some intense running conditions!

One day I did my long run on a treadmilll on a cruise... 16 km of slow running with slight seasickness because of the waves, cannot recommend
Yikes that sounds awful!
Yesterday I was changing after the sauna and caught myself doing flipflop -> sock -> shoe, flipflop -> sock -> shoe. That's fine right Sarah?
In a gym yes
In the gym that's acceptable
Talking about the conditions outside plse spare a moment for those people who are still moving up the Penine way as part of the Montane spine race
Such an amazing event!!
Giggling listening to your Hyrox description. I looove farmer carries. 24 kg - easy peasy.

Perhaps a topic for future pods is SADS and the impact on performance and motivation over the darker months
We have touched on it before, especially in TRC Meets, but happy to go over it again!

Has this crew ever discussed running power?
Yes we have a couple of videos on it!
If your easy runs end up in zone 4, maybe it’s time you did a video on MAF test & training
Zone 2 is so ooooo hard to stick to
It really is! Very frustrating as well at times
How does hydrox compare to the spartan races series? I think it was 1.2 million people and 250 events.
Ooooo we aren't sure, we'll have to look into it!
From what I've seen, Hyrox is usually about $100-150 to compete and $10-15 to just watch
It depends on the country and the city, as well as how busy the event is likely to be
Maybe a fact check needed about your statement that Hyrox is the largest global mass physical event…….parkrun might be sniggering in the corner at the “massive” 90,000 participants you say Hyrox had over 1 year 😂
Too cold for the hot tub? That's not very Canadian of you Rick!
Hahaha
If you really want a nice Marathon to run like you said here Rick, Flying Pig in Cincinnati :)

His hilly park run will be good training for that. It is a pretty hilly course (~1000ft elevation gain).

20 mins and you still haven’t told us what it is
Thanks for the great feedback! We'll make sure we make the topic clearer going forward
Al Gore Rhythm!
I thought it said Hydrox, that delicious other cookie brand.
Mmmmmm cookie
Sarah, you can’t just introduce Sir Herbert then take him away. Instead we see Rick’s rubber duck. 😢. More Herbert!
Hahaha we'll bring him on as a special guest every now and again

What’s a “sled push”? Daftest question ever 🎉
It's exactly as it sounds, you push a weighted sled across the ground for a select period of time or distance
