    Deep within the files of Elden Ring are swords that have left us confused for over a year. Recently, a breakthrough has been made in helping us understand their intention and cut questline. Elden Ring is a 2022 action role-playing game developed by FromSoftware. It was directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki with worldbuilding provided by fantasy writer George R. R. Martin.

    The warped sword reminds me more of the sky in the omen curse ending or in the lichdragon fight. Maybe it was Godwyn’s?

      There is a big theme of helixs and twins in the game (twins are obvious, and there are a lot of helix weapons like the godslayer great sword and the Bolt of Gransax).
      Seeing the cut warped sword makes me wonder of "whorls" were also a similar visual theme earlier in development. As you say, its similar to the omen sky ending and the sky in the lichdragon fight.
      More loosely, there are the flaming whorls of the fire god in the eye of the fire giant.
      From certainly likes to fill their games with certain forms. e.g. Bloodborne has tons of different enemies and statues with a "hunched over" form.
      Edit: lol should have watched the rest of the video and see that my connections were mentioned. I don't always think a single shape means a single connection. I do think From's designers have forms they like. E.g. both Bloodborne and Otogi 2 have a final boss that appears in a cutscene in front of a red moon with "tentacles" (in BB its the Moon Presence, in Otogi 2 its a nine-tailed fox where the tails are visually similar to the MP's tentacles).

    Personal theory: this would have also been connected to Hewg's questline. Specifically, THIS is the weapon that is supposed to slay a god.
    I always found it weird that was his order, but the weapon is just "ehh, whatever the tarnished is using." It feels wrong.
    No evidence for this, but given this would be the only weapon that has its own progression in-game, I think it fits

    Personally I think the quest would have had us find the sheathed sword, and then either take it to 2 separate locations, or complete a quest with 2 different outcomes, depending on which would allow you to "unsheathe" the sword into one of it's 2 forms. I think the twisted version bares a LOT more similarity with the sword Margit uses, it has the same kind of "oily" colour, even without the exact pattern, while also looking very twisted. The idea that it has 3 stages is interesting, but considering the "middle" stage looks pure and the "last" stage looks corrupted, I think it would have been a choice between the two states

    I'd rather speculate that its branching quest. You either unseal it properly revealing royal white-gold blade or you 'corupt' (or rather crack\\melt it open as there is a visible crack going along hilt) by something related to frenzy (three fingers, frenzied flame, involving vyke, etc)

  • @Photoloss

    I think the interesting part about that Sword Monument is not so much Godrick being titled "the Golden", which would have been common for the Golden Lineage throughout most of their history, but rather the fact it describes an event which clearly took place during the Shattering. Meanwhile a bunch of other monuments describe Godfrey's initial campaign of subjugation and the Liurnian War(s?) meaning even if it was a single institution or even an immortal person who erected all of them they have been around for a long, _looong_ time. And kept their style identical throughout, even down to the level of weathering.

    • @LillyAnarkitty
      @LillyAnarkitty 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      Or they made them all in one pass after the shattering. Maybe in order to promote a certain version of history.

    • @OfficiallyMaidenless
      @OfficiallyMaidenless 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      the level of weathering I think would be more down to the devs, if they had to simulate different levels of weathering for each set of swords as they were placed throughout history, they would have to have used multiple different models which would take up more space and time in the long run, for what amounted to a cut quest
      EDIT: Aside from the weathering though I think you're 100% on the mark

    I think the 3 great swords are frenzy (with perhaps scaling being similar to sonaf), godslayer and, while white and gold are colors of royalty, they are also colors associated with ancient dragons here. Don’t get me wrong, the heavy thrusting swords combine strength, elegance and defensive playstyle, making them my favourite class, but I’m no fool, I’m aware greatswords are much more popular, so it’s strange they designed the dragon king cragblade before any dragon related greatswords, they probably just cut it, and will introduce it in the DLC.
    Miriel’s sword could have also been Radagon’s GS before deciding to give it to a random misbegotten tbh.

Idk I think it could be tied to godwyn and miquella trying to revive him possibly so you could either help and get the holy form or hinder him and get the death form.

    Looking at the sword designs I actually think the white/marble incased sword would actually be the final iteration.
    Going from sheethed, to melted/twisted and then marble encased, as the white/marble design appears to be the twisted design, incased in some sort of fractal substance.
    This may be mirroring progressing the Miquella's needle questline:
    Giving self to the Flame of Frenzy, obtaining the needle from Malenia, killing Placidusax and "curing" the flame of Chaos.
    Sheethed represents a normal Tarnished
    The Twisted blade, a Tarnished given into the Frenzied Flame
    Fractal White/Marble, trapping/encasing the Frenzied Flame away, just like Miquella's needle subdues the flame of Chaos.

    i assumed the monument swords had been at least crafted by Ijji since Jerren tells you he made swords "blunt as stone" that were also immune to the scarlet rot.
    Now i imagine we'd either get the weapon version made or sold by Ijji or find it somewhere like a dungeon or cave, then we'd get Miriel to have us do something with it to reach the unsealing bit and after that we would have been able to "corrupt" it with the frenzied flame

  • @rabidcabbage7230
    @rabidcabbage7230 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +20

    A possible theory is that it was going to be Vyke's weapon before and after being frenzied. Then he was cut from his big role, so his lore important and quest dependent sword was cut with him and replaced with a spear. I think the dialogue about being underground from the turtle could be related to it possibly being left underground near the frenzy fingers. Then, the undoing is undoing the disfigurement of the frenzy influence. With the resemblance to the sword monuments, it could be chalked up to reusing an already made but unused asset, as the lore monuments seem a bit out of touch and talk about history from a very long span of time, which doesn't make too much sense and none ever acknowledges them or how they got there. However, I know it's bad theory crafting to chalk it up to practicality, even if it is true. Therefore, my lore inclusion to the sword monuments is that they are made by (____) someone I don't know who it'd be, but by the same people who made the sword. Vyke was gifted the sword as he was thought to be the one to become the Elden lord. That is why his sword and the monuments look the same since they were from the same group/person.

    Maybe the sword was intended for vyke originally being marble or ivory and gold when you fight him at the lord contenders evergaol then when you fight him at the church of inhibition you get the melted version that or vyke would have been a quest line and the reward changes depending on your choices like helping him find Miquella gives the clean sword and if he finds the three fingers the melted version

  • @Joshua_Shadow_Manriguez
    @Joshua_Shadow_Manriguez 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    Maybe the twisted darkened blade was the second stage, and the white and gold version was it completely restored if we assume all three are the same. Hell, maybe Muriel was in charge of it because it was inbued with the Flame of Frenzy unintentionally, and we could purify it with unalloyed gold from like when we have the Frenzied Flame, or we could've used the Needle we get from Millicent's questline.
    Also, I hope Curved Greatswords get more love in the DLC. Like, maybe we could get a Curved Greatsword version of a weapon like Radahn's sword, or something that resembles the Omen Killer Blade, but with a guard and have it be lighter.

    I wonder if the ornate sword may have to do with the Albinaurics with the Haligtree. I say that because the blade scheme is similar to both the Albinauric shield and Loretta’s shield. And the two being a dichotomy ; one can be about a good ending with Albinaurics finding the promised land, the other being the frenzied flame ending.

    While watching this video. I came up with the idea that these three swords are not one sword that changes it's appearance, rather that those three swords exist individually and are in the posetion of three area bosses (not necessarily bosses). Like the burned sword could be a sword under the Three Fingers rule, the white sword under the rule of a royal versility and the "sealed" sword amongst an important, knowledgeable or powerful versility.

    I think you've got a really good observation - but then followed the wrong thread of cut content about swords rather than about Vyke.
    I think it's _significantly_ more probable that the sword Miriel is referring to would be the Dark Moon Greatsword, since it was explicitly bequeathed as a part of a marriage ceremony in the church where he resides.
    I think it's most likely that originally, after you received it from Ranni under ground, you would have needed to take it to him in order to have its Ash unlocked under the light of the Moon at the church as a part of completing your vow as Ranni's consort eternal (hence the animation for charging the Ash being to raise it skyward, allowing you to fire the arc with the heavy attack).
    This likely would have also connected to how Radagon's Fukl Moon Greatsword that he got through marriage to Rennala and reforged into his Golden Order Greatsword is inexplicably in the possession of a Leonine Misbegotten deep in a cave up north, and also why Master Hewg is tasked by Marika to forge a blade capable of killing a god as those bith lead to the Age of Stars ending where Marika is not repaired but fully slain.
    I assume that they just dialed back some of those details or didn't finish some of the miscellaneous additional elements with it, and all of this is _entirely unrelated_ to those 3 unused blades.
    I think it's significantly more likely to have been conceived as a part of Vyke's cut questline in Stormvale, especially given the nuances of the design work, and how it's connected to the history and Vyke was the closest to becoming Elden Lord.
    Especially given how much of the Merchants and Kalé's questlines were cut back, I would expect that this would have been a facet of those questlines with the sword likely changing based around a particular path that you follow at the Giant's Forge and whether you use Melina or yourself as the kindling - making all the difference in that as a forge with an eternal flame, and whether or not it burns your body.

    One thing worth noting is that cut content is generally cut for a reason, like how Kale's quest was likely cut because it incentivises the player to seek the Frenzy ending, which is otherwise the hardest and most out of the curve of the 3 types of endings, probably intended to be a little more of a secret ending for second playthroughs or the rare few who bumped into it (like the Dark Lord ending in DS1 or the End of Fire ending in DS3). For this sword quest, I can think of two big reasons why it was cut from the game:
    1 - Having to trade an item for another as a quest step, meaning you would lose your previous sword. FromSoft has quests where you get different rewards depending on what you did, but they don't often force you to loose an item for a questline, usually they just have key items that serve solely for being sacrificed for quest progression (like Seluvis' potion, which has no use other than being given to someone as a quest step).
    The only exception I can think of for that rule is the Key of the Embeded from Dark Souls 2, so they have done it before once, but it's still not somethign they usually do. And the key was also a weapon you straight up had to sacrifice, not exchange for another, I think that's important because if you trade a sword for a different one, it can generate a lot of frustration if you feel like the new sword is worse than the previous one.
    For example, the sheathed sword would do strike damage, while the other forms likely would not. They also look more magical, so they might use int, fth or arc while the sheathed form uses only str and dex. They could also have different weapon skills that don't offer the same kind of utility the previous form did. Just baseless specilation of course, but these are some examples of differences that could make the questline unrewarding for someone.
    2 - A questline revolving around a specific weapon could incentivise players to use that weapon, specially if they solve the previous issue by making the new forms better than the old ones so they feel rewarding. That could go against the principle of incentivising players to use several different weapons and experiment around, which could harm the intended experience. If someone starts this quest and ends up only using these swords for the entire game, that would make the whole journey less enjoyable since they wouldn't play around with different weapons and skills, not to mention it could make weapon loot less rewarding.

      One thing I will say, is they made you trade both the swords from the lothrick princes fight in DS3 to get the combined sword. But that required 3 playthroughs I think.

    • @urtoryu_dy_althraidn
      @urtoryu_dy_althraidn 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@jacobplyler6078 Yeah, but it not only takes multiple playthroughs, making it a far more optional bonus thing, it also clearly shows you the sword you'll get and what you're spending to get it, so the player can chose to make the trade or not.
      Questlines usually don't give you a clear explanation and menu screen of what you're doing.
      By th way, Demon's Souls has something similar to that, it's a sword called Northern Regalia that you forge by fusing two endgame swords. What they did there was making the Northern Regalia just undeniably better than either sword in every aspect.

      @jacobplyler6078 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@urtoryu_dy_althraidn That's true. To your original point, implementation of the swords was more than likely the problem, especially if it was an upgrade or trade kind of thing through a quest. It could have been cool, but it could have also been hard to implement without breaking the game.

    What I think is it’s icons from a cut boss weapon from Morgott’s remembrance, since the second form looks so much like Morgott’s sword
    The writing on the monuments is kinda old-timey speak, like how Morgott speaks, perhaps because of his yearning for the past
    I could see this being an early version of his weapon, where he’d unsheath it in the royal form for phase 1, perhaps cloaked in illusion to hide his omen self, and resheath it and pull out the second form for phase 2, shattering his illusion, revealing his true self
    Wild speculation, but it’d be a neat idea for sure!

    Just going my motif, I can almost imagine the weapon being the sword of Godwyn. One a version corrupted by Death, while the other is an uncorrupted version. The related quest could have even had a step that would switch the blade from one state to the other, depending on which was the default. Turtle Pope seems to imply that you found it "underground", which to me tells me two places: the Nokron/Ainsel/etc. area OR the underground area where you fight Fortisax. The second sounds more likely.

    Moonlight and Darkslayer. Bet there be a quest from dlc to use a meditation emote below Gurranq to fight a dragon in the clouds. and perhaps even another quest underground for the dark version. The part that is inbetween the handle and blade look like the old one from demon souls, and I can't help but notice theres a giant soul eating tree. What if someone used the souls from the trees(Erd and Halig) to revive Godwyn? I feel like between Miquella creating their own tree and (potentially)Marika's statue pouring water out of a vase symbolize using souls like water to grow a tree. That shadow of the erdtree image could be the literal shadow of the Erdtree, like a mirror dimension where its dark tree has a shadow of light. Wierd bit of random finding, but the minor erdtrees church has three trees that look exactly like a taproot growing straight up, with branches of another tree grafted on to them. I think the side 2 are stunted for some reason, showing a 1/3 success rate. Perhaps the grafted branches don't always benefit the host, a lot like coral from AC6.

    I think since church of vows is so closely related to Manus Celeste, the sword that turtle pope is referring to is The Darkmoon Greatsword. Or possibly its holy opposite with the Golden Order Greatsword as it is lost underground and the church of vows represents the marriage between Rennala and Radagon.

    My theory would be that the questline related to the sword(s) being mentioned in the video is thus...
    It seems like its meant to be a questline with two different options or paths you could go down.
    One you take the monument sword to Turtle Pope and he unsheathes it and you get rewarded with the smooth, white and gold blade.
    The other being you take the monument sword to the three fingers or somewhere in deeproot depths or somewhere else, and thus you get the corrupted, twisted version of the blade.
    I dont think its three seperate weapons, i think its just one weapon that has two possible outcomes and the unsheathed sword you get depends on the choice you would have to make by the end of the questline

    Something we don't know is what was Radagon's original weapon as a champion. But the darkened swirled design seems like nothing we've seen of the Golden Order before. The intricacies of its shape would suggest that it's not of the Frenzied Flame. It's possible still to be a weathered state of a once glorious sword. It's possible a Miquella quest would restore it more to a quality. I wouldn't put it past being for the DLC, nor to the way to it. I like to imagine it being found in the Lake of Rot or on the way to it.

    To me it seems that this swords ( or one sword in different phases ) was connected to games main quest and the ending. Maybe you had to have this sword to rightfully proclaim yourself the Elden Lord, and maybe Muriel was a part of the main questline ( logical because he seems a knowledgeable and important character to be just on the wayside in a random church ).
    Personally i think this three swords are one sword but in different phases of the game's ending. First one ( probably it gets unsheathed later ) is for Elden Lord ending(s) ( all 4 of them ), other bluish one is for Ranni's ending, and in the Flame of Frenzy ending your Elden Lord's sword becomes like this. Maybe it was even the idea that you would get that sword as a usable weapon after finishing the game ( like you get sword made from Radagon now ) depending on your ending.
    But that's just a theory...

    I feel like miriel would be the beginning of the quest. After the seal is broken and the sword unsheathed the next step is to take it to master hewg. He states the sword is not that great and isn't in any condition to be used but can be if forged with accient metals. The reason is because the sword absorb bits of grace at it lay dormant. Now the next step would be to find the accient metals. Maybe somewhere in the haligtree there is a hidden chest or boss that has the material. And then for the other metal it can be found at the top of the frenzied flame tower in a chest after defeating the enemies. But in order to use it it must be blessed mpby the three fingers. After you have both or one you can take it to iji and he can make a special ingot that you then take to hewg. Depending on what you choose you can get the haligtree's salvation or the unbound frenzy.

    Whatever's the case, the unsheathed models clearly have a root formation-type design above the hilt, which may tie them to both of the trees. Then again, with what little info we have, there's a good chance they'll be used for the DLC, what with the deathroot swarming the Haligtree (yes, its the Miquella one, its outline is obvious).

  • @scrubaatividya
    @scrubaatividya 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    to me it feels like the Haligtree connection is RIGHT it FEELS right, I think maybe this sword would've been the literal blade of Miquella, a sword he actually used, it has an ornamental design that suggests more of an ornamental sword meant to show his nobility/godhood as Miquella seems to be shown as being someone who did not fight but rather his sister would instead fight for him
    perhaps you'd actually find the sword in the Haligtree or "resting against" a sword statue in the Consecrated Snowfield tho that feels unlikely, the warping is interesting as it would suggest being able to corrupt it via the Frenzy Flame (which in a sense could also connect it to Miquella even more due to Miquella's Needle being needed to remove the Frenzied Flame) or perhaps instead it would be found in the area before the Three Fingers and could be taken to the Haligtree where you would "cure" it restoring it to the marbled white blade
    another answer might be actually more interesting as it could instead suggest that Fromsoft may have actually considered playing around with World Tendency again but scrapped it, so hear me out perhaps the sword would've changed form based on your World/Player Tendency, where it would appear maybe as a stone sword at neutral, the marbled blade at white and the malformed blade at black or maybe even have worked like Soulbrandt and Demonbrandt where you could either find each version in different locations like ones at the Haligtree and has high Holy low Phys dmg and the other is at the Three Fingers and would instead be high Fire low Phys dmg
    though maybe instead of anything like that instead consider the "sheathed sword" being a 'weapon' it could also suggest a similar two halves make a whole type thing but instead by taking the sheathed sword to a certain location such as for eg the Haligtree you would be able to "transpose" it into the Marble Sword and it would gain holy damage or you take it to the Frenzy Flame and aslong as you are afflicted with the flame you can strip and interact with the fingers again and instead have the sword become the Warped Sword which would gain fire damage and ofc the AoW would change too 'Marble Sword' would gain a holy projectile type of move maybe like Miquella's Ring of Light or more uniquely it would have Radagon's Rings of Light as it's Ash of War while the 'Warped Sword' would likely gain something similar to Vyke's spear but perhaps also paralleling the Marble version by instead having a Frenzy Flame madness inducing version of Black Flame Ritual just with a bigger radius
    just my thoughts on it, I hope these will return in the DLC as I hope a lot of cut content will but we will have to wait and see

So they wielded them with the sheath on and thus literally making them Dull as Stone.

Especially in Godrick's younger years, before he began experimenting with grafting and became Godrick the Grafted. Even in Godrick's dialogue he mentions "i am the lord of all that is Golden." Maybe, you can only decide for one. The older one is a sword with a strong physical ash of war. The golden one has a ability like wave of gold or something similar. The black one could be frenzy or godslayer. I would say frenzy, because the statues are relating to the gods ( Godrick, the golden…), so Godslayer doesn’t fit imo.
