While we're growing our Monstera deliciosa or many other aroid plants such as Philodendron, Anthurium, Syngonium, Pothos, and more, you may start to see things growing out of the side of stems. What are these things, what are they for, and what can you do with them? In this video I describe what these aerial roots are for, how they help the plants grow in nature, and I give four different solutions of what you can do with your to achieve your houseplant goals. thank you for showing the image of monsteras in the wild, that really inspired me!
Great!!
I put my air roots in water about 10 days ago and now have 3 new leaves sprouting! Never before! It's incredible,!
Yessss it works so well!
Same here! But other aerial roots keep growing up and I can not control them anymore 😂
Did u leave the attached of cut them off before sitting in water ??
I thought that caused root rot
I will try this!!!!
Excellent video. I love how you gave so many options and the explained the reasons fully. I now can make my own decision based on the info you've provided. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Brilliant! Best explanation for this I've found. Thankyou!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for a very informative video, and thank you for not waffling about, but going straight to the point. My monstera's aerial roots are insanely long and I didn't know how to deal with them, but now I do 😊Thank you again and greeting from the UK 🇬🇧
Happy to help :) and not waffling
Those pictures of monsteras in the wild are magnificent! When I downsized into a very small house I had to give up mine in favor of smaller plants but after seeing those I'm thinking maybe I should give up a few of those & get another monstera! Thanks for the info!
You should! They’re so carefree
Very practical and nicely comprehensive video. Thank you.
Hope you found it helpful!
This was such an informative video! You answered all my questions I had about my roots! Thank you so much
Happy to help!!
My big, old monstera is getting very, very thick aerial roots that want to grow across the room. You can't bend them without breaking them. So that i don't have to dance a limbo, i let them grow through a flexible cable tube made of polyester fabric. So I could guide them directly into the pot without detours. That worked great! ^^
Wow!! That’s such a great idea, thank you for sharing!!
This was so helpful!! Thank you!!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks Devin great information!

Good video 😊
Thanks for watching!
I wrap air roots around the trunk. Looks cool.
Oooo sounds cool!
Love this plant in the wild; I couldn’t imagine what my yard would look like if I was in the right climate 😂
They are such majestic plants when grown outside!!
Very helpful video! I inhereted a Monstera a few years ago from my dad, but had concluded it was not a Monstera because the leaves never had fenestrations. Then I happened upon an old photo of him sitting near the same plant and it had MANY fenestrations, and the leaves were much larger. That's when I deduced the plant needs more light than I was giving it.
I’m glad you are discovering how to care for it :)
Monstera delicious is really beautiful for indoor plant
supremely striking!
Yes they are, my favorite for sure
@@hotdamn9052 nice
I have two huge monstera plants next to each other. I took the aerial roots and formed them into peace signs. Then. I took my trailing dolphins and wrapped them around the aerial roots. It's so cool!
Sweet!!
This was really helpful! My plant has aerial roots and I was unsure on what it was and what to do!
Off to get a bigger pot and will put them into soil. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful! Hope it goes well
I'm hoping to get great aerial roots so I can braid them and give them a decorative look.
Oooh I love it
I'm thinking about getting another monstera. Along with a few others.😁
Get one!!!
Interesting video. I don’t have a monstera. But I know that I would be one to cut off the arial roots
Hehehe
My biggest monstera was just big enough to need a plank this past spring. It's only after that the aerial roots took off. I don't find them unsightly as yet at least lol
Haha as mine grows more I find them more and more appealing!
Thank you for sharing information that helps a lot . I do have questions I’m still learning my monstera plant I had my plant since pandemic I notice that my plant can’t cope with heat without any humidity I had to remove in my second room into my living area where is cooler. Will humidifier wouldn’t hurt it? I had to pour more water to help my plant to look alive wait until it need to be water again because it looks sad I don’t have stick with potting soil to support grow tall. I will watch how you made yours. Thanks hope you reply soon.
I’ve never had problems with humidity being a concern
Thank you for your respond.
When you cut the aerial root, does it grow back? Thanks , and for the video too :)
I’ve never witnessed them regrow from the same exact spot
I love mine. I don’t find them unsightly at all!
I like the jungly vibes
If you plant the rooted aerial roots in a seperate containor and cut them off from the mother plant, will they grow leaves?
My understanding is that they would not but it would be a good experiment!!
Can I send you a picture of my Monstera for tips? She’s looks healthy but I’m worried about the direction in which she’s growing + aerial roots and want to jnow if I should replant her and how I should go about it. :) have a wonderful day!
Yep, via Instagram
I also used pool noodles, cut a vertical slit in them, and made holes in the side using a screw driver. I attached the aerial roots inside the holes. The aerial roots can keep growing and they have oxygen within the pool noodles. So you don't see the aerial roots.
So fun
Can you grow a whole new monstera from a well-rooted areal root? For instance once it has a bunch of roots of the end of the aerial root, then cut off the aerial root from the monstera and plant it and maybe it would start growing leaves?
I’m honestly not sure! Try it out!
If anyone sees this can you help me I have two of these plants next to each other and one has rooted into the other now wht do I do ? How do I cut it off
What if I have all my aerial roots going into another pot with soil but now want to cut them ? Is that ok ? Or do I need to take them out of the extra pot and bury them into the main pot , like you said in this video?
It is likely that they have started growing roots into the secondary pot so if you cut them now it may be a bit traumatic to your plant and worth burying them into the main pot. That said, if its too challenging to do that, it may be traumatic to cut them off but it won't kill it
"welp sorry suckers" lol Thanks for this info, very helpful!
🙌🙌
I curved the longer ones to circle the top of the pot, looks like mould is starting to develop on some of them..what to do?
I’d consider just cutting them off if mold is starting
Can I cut each node with leaf and aerial root and just plant it dirt or do I need to put in water first and let them grow the tiny roots first?
I rec getting some roots in water first
I stick all the roots into the pot. Nothing else makes more sense. No moss poles. No nonsense. All the roots grow into the soil as normal roots and provide the plant with stability and nutrients. I don't know why would anyone do otherwise.
I do as well
When you make a cutting can you use root in water
Yes!
My monstera’s aerial roots are about teo feet long, but there have not been any new leaves since the aerial roots grew so long -about six months! What do you suggest to help with leaf growth? Thanks!
I would try to plant the aerial roots into the pot!
Once the aerial root roots in the soil, can you cut off the stock it came from and grow another monsterra?
I’m having a hard time understanding what you mean. You can send me a photo on ig if that helps
Would it be possible to also just wrap the aerial roots around the moss pole?
I don’t see why not!
@@plantvibrations what would you recommend to secure them to the moss pole?
Will the roots in the mason jar grow leaves ?
Generally no
I have a monstera cutting with only aerial roots on it. I don’t see any nodes on the plant. If I place it in water what will happen to it?
The aerial roots will create more roots in the water and then you can plant it up
Great video!!!! I was trying to bury them on the soil but every now and then they were attaching to my wall!!! A big NO!!! I was scared to cut them and kill my beautiful plant. Thank you very much!!!!
Glad to help!!
How often do you water this type of plant
When the top inch of the soil is dry
What can I do about those small Flies bothering my monstera
Bacilus thuringensis var israelensis
I know that this is not related to this video here, but I did notice that your monstera appears to be sitting in an indirect light corner. I had to move my plant today from my bay view window (non direct sunlight) to my desk - and I am wondering if the plant is going to not be happy with the move. The exciting news (why I did it) is because the plant out grew the window area.
So my question is - is it OK to place my plant in a low lit corner without indirect sunlight? or do I need to get it back near indirect sun?
They do quite well in lower lit areas, but they will prefer some supplemental lighting. So if you can provide a lamp like I’ve done it will appreciate it
I'm thinking you might be able to place a new pot on a shelf half way up the wall. Then you put all the roots past that point in to that pot. So once the monstera has grown too tall and you need to cut it, you already have an entire root system established for the upper part.
thats a great idea!
I don't think I would have enough room to have all these extra pots to nowhere. I thought I could cut off whose areal roots but that would probably be
really bad. I may just try and control where they grow and partially tie them to the trunk or hide them behind the big leaves.
After letting mine create roots in water it was easier to plant them into the soil
How do I get mine this bigggg???

Can i cut it off & and put it in water?
It won’t do anything in water once cut off
When do aerial roots start growing out. I have a huge monstera deliciosa but no aerial roots.
Normally by the second or third year
Thanks for the video. Dont quite understand thr purpose of putting them in water then transferring to soil. Just put them in the soul to begin with.
Yep!!!!! I just cut some of mine off.
That’s awesome! Best of luck
How about just tucking them around the top of the pot without burying them in the soil? Would that be ok?
Also curious, my monstera is almost exactly the same size as yours but it only has one aerial root abt 3’ long (I’m obsessed with it) Your plant has so many! Could I be causing this somehow?
Yeah you can definitely do that! And i think if your plant is looking good then I wouldn’t worry about how many of them you have
Will my monstera die if I cut off the Aerial roots?
No
@@plantvibrations Thanks brother!
I can’t grow a monstera. My first one I split one and gave to my friend. Hers is beautiful growing aerial roots. Mine died. I bought another she looked great then died. I have it in the bathroom with one brown leaf. I was hoping it grew some leaves but to no avail. I’m going to toss it. I give up😢
Have you seen my video about 7 tips for growing monstera?
5) I cut off about 10 aerial roots and put them in water and three have roots so far…
Wow cool I’ve never tried that
wow!!! I will try it
Oh no, he cut his hairs, he was so cute with long hairs
Hairs. Ok, if that's how you want to say it. Sounds a little funny to me though.
Oops just cut all of mine off
It’s all good
Yeah just cut em😂
lol
Great video. I place my roots in water. Since doing that, my Monstera has grown quicker and much larger leaves. Thank you. 🪴💚
I’ve totally noticed the same! Do you add some fert to the water?
@@plantvibrations i didn’t think about it until I heard you mention it. I will be doing that. I just love all your plants. Can you show more of them. It’s just gorgeous all the plant babies. They bring me so much joy. Have a great Friday. 🪴💚
Abomination! Don’t cut because they aren’t cute ?? Let them run free ❤
🙌🙌🙌
why are you adding two syllables to 'use' all the time. You aren't writing a scientific paper and the common use of both 'use' and utilise' means the same, you're just making work for you and the listener. It doesn't make you seem smarter to waste time and energy on two meaningless extra syllables.
Great comment!
Thank you!
