    This is a cover of the Allman Brothers original song. He is actually performing in this video in front of Gregg Allman who is in the audience watching. Seems like he really enjoyed the performance of his bands song at the end. He is the blond guy clapping that the camera pans on at the end of the video.

    "What is that thing on his finger?" - It's called a guitar slide. It's helps a guitarist create a slide guitar sound even if they're not sitting in front of a lap slide guitar, which is a different instrument. They can be made of glass, steel, brass, or ceramic for different sounds. You can buy them at music stores... or you know... Amazon. You have the right idea on how it's used.

  • @carlrosenzweig1867
    @carlrosenzweig1867 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I have to say, it makes me happy seeing you being exposed to really great music that's outside of your experience and comfort zone. When you hear someone talking about "slide guitar" that's what that guy was doing. If you go back to the really early bluesmen, like in the 1920s and 30s, they would break off the top of wine bottles and use that to get that sound. That's what that is emulating.

  • @philipbarton2634

    That "thing" on his finger is a slide. Duane Allman, Gregs brother, figured it out one day during lunch at a Muscle Shoals session after seeing one of the Shoals blues session guys using it, I can't remember who. Duane used a cold pill bottle that he had on hand that just happened to fit his finger, and subsequently used it all through his short life. It is arguably a fundamental element of the rock/blues fusion sound and an incredibly important part of music history. The fundamental impact of this song cannot be understated. This is pure American, rising out of the misery of the Mississippi Delta slavery culture and finding a landing place with two brilliant White Southern hippie brothers , Greg and Duane Allman. ....who at a very young age had the wisdom to insist that the color of our skin is meaningless and recognize that music is an amazing vehicle to communicate love and brotherhood. The roots are deep, painful, awful,......yet brilliant and a celebration of human triumph and the ability to rise above the misery that we somehow insist on inflicting on each other.

    That thing on the guitarist's finger is actually just known as a 'guitar slide' that allows the person playing to imitate or make a regular 6 string sound pretty close to an actual 'pedal steel slide guitar' ...wtf is that? Glad you asked, DJ Mann, I have a recommendation for one of the very finest slide guitarists on earth, the song is Robert Randolph and the Family Band "Baptise Me"...he originally played the organ and pedal steel in church growing up until Eric Clapton 'discovered him' , basically gave him hundreds of albums to listen to covering the entire history of rock n' roll and then took him (along with his bandmates, his actual family) out on tour opening up stadium concerts, and Robert even performed at the Grammys after being nominated for his first studio album almost 20 years ago now. The man is a treasure and in my opinion, one of the top 10 guitar players still alive today, and almost criminally underrated or overlooked. 100% worth a listen. keep doin what you do man!

    He first was Bluegrass, then Country and Country isn't letting go of him. We do say his music is Country Soul.

    "What genre of music is this?" - Technically, this is a cover of an old Allman Brothers tune from 1969, so this is Southern Rock. But I agree, you can't put Chris in any sort of box. I've heard him sing old country (Garth Brooks, "Shameless" at Kennedy City Honors), straight soul (James Brown, "It's a Man's World" at some bar), 1940's classics (Jimmie Davis, "You are My Sunshine" duet with his wife Morgane... a couple of different places), and of course his originals. I'm impressed by all of it.

Best slide guitarist ever Derek Trucks said by some to be the reincarnation of Dwayne Allman AKA Skydog. Derek married to Susan Tedeschi who some have said is the female Chris Stapleton. Try anything live from Tedeschi Trucks Band they have 12 piece band and both are child prodigies now in their 40's. Grammy winners as well.

    If you like good music, I would love for you to react to a phenomenal Kpop group called EXO. My suggestions for first reaction are MV's for songs "Tempo", "What is Love?", "Call Me Baby" and "Overdose".......They also have two sub units EXO-CBX, "Hey Mama!" or "Blooming Days" EXO-SC "What A Life" and "Closer to You", 6 of the 9 members have solo albums "Bambi" by Baekhyun, "Mmmh" by Kai, "Rose" by D.O., "Self Portrait" by Suho, "Honey" by Lay, and "April and a Flower" by Chen. They also sing soundtracks and have singles or collabs as well..... "Young", "Stay With Me", "That's Okay" and so many more. They have a solid R&B core and have tried out just about every genre possible, diff styles and tones. Two of the members are even in a power super group called SuperM...."Jopping" and "Tiger Inside". Every song is very different and they are dubbed the King of Vocals. I really think you might enjoy them.

    I'm surprised that you, as a black man, didn't have something to say about a white man comparing his girl cheating on him to a slave being tied up and beaten as "discipline"...because that's what a whipping post is. A slave driver would tie up his slave who misbehaved to a post (called a whipping post) and beat him with a whip while the rest of the slaves were forced to watch. It's kind of hard to justify the song, because nobody in their right mind would compare being cheated on to being in a Nazi concentration camp.
    I love the song...it's a banger. But it's a bit insensitive and problematic in that way.

      I'm fully aware of what a whipping post is and i understand your point. I don't take offense to it bc it's a saying i grew up hearing ppl of all races saying. sometimes in life we go through things, and you can feel like you're being whipped and/or beat like slaves were beat and whipped at the whipping post. I don't find it derogatory but I'm not one of those ppl that find everything racist either I do see a lot of underlined racism in the American culture and am often called racist for speaking on it.... but I'm not racist and even though I don't fault anyone or play the blame game some ppl still say I'm racist for not pretending to be blind to the facts.

      @@djmanntv Right on. Don't get me wrong; I'm in no way saying you should be offended, because far be it from me to tell someone how they're supposed to feel about something. It's bad enough that everybody gets so easily offended by everything...but then they gotta be offended that other people aren't offended by the thing they're offended by. 🙄 It's exhausting.

    Love Chris but you are wrong on this one. Great cover by Chris but The Allman Brothers are the truth on this original by them. Greg Allman woke up one night with these lyrics on his mind and could not find a pen or paper. Wrote the song with burnt matches on an ironing board. Check it out!
