  • Today I’m potting up the Poppy root cuttings that I took in November and sowing some Californian Poppies. It’s also time to plant out my first hardy annual - the Orlaya seedlings are ready.

    Do you have squirrels? I have trouble with squirrels that dig in my garden. Your trees look beautiful. I hope your poppies come up I have never had luck just sowing them outside don't know why. Thank you for the video.

      Hi there, yes, we do have a few squirrels but others on the comments seem to think the culprits are birds and we have an annoying number of pigeons and magpies so I think it's probably birds. Fingers crossed for the poppies!

    I'm curious how your Salvia cuttings from last year did. Did they make it?

    • @cottoverdi
      @cottoverdi  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Haha. Glad you asked, yes, they all made it but then I potted them up and went on holiday and they didn't get sufficient water and so I lost them all!!! I was devastated but these things happen and I will just take some more this year. Have you tried?

    I know it is not a cat channel but you could show us your cats? They all look like they just stepped out of the Catfood advertisement and we always just get a quick look of them! 😂😍 Greetings, Judit

    • @cottoverdi
      @cottoverdi  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Judit - that's so funny because I tend to edit the cats OUT of the videos because I thought it would be annoying for everyone else! They are all pure breeds - Max and Baloo are both British Shorthairs and (Mackerel tabby and Silver tipped, respectively) and Cosmo is a Golden British Longhair.

      @@cottoverdi Yes I understand, it is a bit risky but if you see more cat-appreciative comments coming up, maybe a dedicated one minute won't hurt the channel 😊. Or if you post it on Instagram, I will check it there 😄😄

      Hi there, it's best to take root cuttings in the autumn and I'm not sure I'd mess with the roots of my plant during spring because the plant is about to flower. I'd wait.

    I have enjoyed your videos and subscribed after I saw your first one. You give me a lot of inspiration. Your garden is lovely and your cats are adorable! I live in Southern California, Zone 10a. Your poppies are going to look fantastic! Please keep us updated on your grasses.

      @bewoodford2807 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I agree. I think they wanted it for nesting material and pulled at it as they do with onion sets. Love something soft to linr their nests with, bless them.

    I suspect it’s your cats that have pulled out the grass plants. Both my cats go mad in my ornamental grasses and they chew them too. They will probably be fine once they are well rooted and established.

    • @cottoverdi
      @cottoverdi  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Aileen, it may have been the cats but I think it's more likely to be the pigeons or magpies. we have so many big birds and to be honest, the cats just aren't that interested in the plants - they prefer to chase the field mice!

    It is a wonderful time of year, all the beautiful color starting to appear, I love pine trees and you have some lovely ones. I meant to tell you but keep forgetting, you have really cute kitties. What in the world dug up your grasses, that is so maddening, critters of some sort I suppose.

    • @cottoverdi
      @cottoverdi  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Jane! Yes, every time I venture out, something else seems to be in bud or bloom - it's gorgeous. Our kitties are a welcome distraction now that the kids have left home. We miss them both so much. I think it was the pigeons or magpies that pulled at the grasses - I'm going to be erecting some protection!

    Love Prunus Kanzan- it was a cherry tree I had in my very first house. Means such a lot to me- brought back many memories. Beautiful poppy varieties. I have my Californian poppies to sow. So much to do at the moment, and it is so wet. I think it was birds turfing out your grasses. They tug at them to remove strands of dead grass to line their nests and if a grass is newly planted it gets pulled up. The ground around certainly didn't look dug up.. So excited to see your garden in full bloom- you and Richard have certainly put a lot of work in to make your own patch of paradise. Happy gardening Annette 🙂

    • @cottoverdi
      @cottoverdi  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi be, yes, gosh, Kanzan is stunning when in bloom - all those double pretty pink petals and it hangs on to them so well - we have cherry blossom for weeks. Yes, I too think it was the birds. Ugh. I'm going to be erecting some protection this weekend to keep the birds off until the grasses have rooted in. Hope you have a dry weekend. 😁
