    a perfect vessel to teach rigging. Again, i find myself pausing and admiring the wooden screw plugs and the putty, as a woodworker i can see all the repairs and touch ups that really do blend together.. i love this vessel. id love to see the ship builders drawings and or blue prints. All the woodwork amazes me. she isw a beauty. oh and give Lance a treat and a pat for me.

    you mention getting rid of the double ended halliards on the main throat and peak halliards; on our gaff rig we fitted independent pulley systems to one end of each. This allowed us to hoist and drop quickly using the "free" end and then use the pulley systems to tension the halliards when hoisted. With the two ends with pulleys on one side of the mast and the "free" ends on the other side the primary hoist can be done from one side with both halliards being pulled up at the same time, and then tensioned from the other side. Without this we found that the number of pulleys we needed to have in place to hoist and tension the sail created too much friction for the sail to be dropped easily in a blow.

    Thankyou; you're making some other people's dreams more plausible. Beautiful that you can repair lots of equipment yourselves and even redesign in many small ways; some peace of mind! I could only expect such self-sufficiency in rather beamy (low tech) steel design; and above deck all those timber spars and twist ropes and pulleys are very sane. It's not the very traditional style so much as the practicality that impresses me.
    Pleasant people as well,.

    Hello Paige and Matthew, as I have mentioned before, you have an absolutely beautiful boat. This is the kind of boat that I'd like to admire and not own. It has that romantic gaff rig and old worldly feel. It is probably obvious that that boat owns you, you do not own that boat :) Most boats are like that but these old wooden boats in particular.

    • @LivingWithTheTide
      @LivingWithTheTide  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup, plan to re-rig as part of the refit. Want to make a few changes to better suit us. The current set up is a bit complicated, has more advantage then just a 2 shiit block but more work swaping sides, I feel a simpler system should work fine.

    My family owned a Dickies 1939 teak on oak ketch called Kerynia , my father did 3 Atlantic crossings with her and he put a Renault 4x4 on deck in a cradle ...... they got into heavy weather and decided to lighten the car by throwing away the doors , so in the Caribbean we drove around in a door less car ... it was 1964 so a bit lawless..... Morna is beautiful

    • @LivingWithTheTide
      @LivingWithTheTide  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That must have been a big boat I dont think we could fit a 4x4 on deck Haha!

    • @austingode
      @austingode 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Living With The Tide She was only 70 ' ....... ! But the car was only the size of a mini but heavier I think 💭. Any footage of Saigon during the Vietnam war shows hundreds of them as taxis . Dickies built three boats using the same design although one of them had a more pronounced shear and was more attractive as a result ..... they were Delia , Valdora , and Kerynia as a child I knew them all , Delia was owned by Graham Edge the drummer of the Moody Blues and he cruised the Caribbean in the late 70's with her .....Dickies built beautiful boats and Morna is lovely especially being a double ender ..... lots of varnish though !! All the best to you guys and your squeezable dog ... also suspected but only now just confirmed that Morna is a Fife ! A true thoroughbred
