My wife is Indonesian, I'm from the UK. There's so much amazing food in Indonesia that the western world has never heard of. Not sure why it isn't more popular but it should be.
I think one of the reasons is Indonesia has no signature dishes. When we are talking about Japanese food, sushi and ramen will pop up in our heads. When we are talking about Italy, it will be either pizza or pasta. But, Indonesia has no signature dishes. Each part of Indonesia has different tastes. Hence it is hard to promote Indonesian Food.
I gotta say, I love how genuine your channel feels. It's not flashy or one that seems to follow YT algorithm trends that you tend to see with food content channels. I wish you were in Portland!!
Yo, I'm Indonesian and I've been living in North Philly for like 7 months now. Your video about this restaurant just popped and it sounds awesome! Thanks a bunch, man. I'm totally gonna check it out soon.
That shit looks FIRE!! I freaking love Indonesian food but I've only had it a couple times in the Netherlands and I'm worried the US can't compete lol but this gave me some more hope!
What's going on with the algorithm. Never seen any of your vids now suddenly I'm getting them every 3rd or 4th video, sometimes one right after the other. Not that I mind. Great content brother.
I love Padang food. A lot of Malay food has its origins in Padang cuisine. Super yummy and incredible variety. Those small dishes are great for sharing with friends.
I’m ganna need you to make more videos, I just got to the end of what I could watch and my heart sank. These are so good! The algorithm has truly blessed me this day
Where have you been the last decade? My god I absolutely love videos where we get to peek behind the curtain into the wonderful world of food. Bless you!
i’ve always been fascinated with accents in languages and the owners accent intrigues me so much. it seems that she was born in indoneasia but she lived in america for so long that you hear both accents. great vid btw
And one thing from Padang restaurant is that they only charge you with the dishes that you ate, so even if they serve you 20 kinds they won't charge for everything 😊
yep, and if you take only the gravy it won't be charged as long as you don't take the protein with it. so basically you could sample all the gravies in the "hidang" serving for free. It blew my mind that even if the colors were identical, it all had different flavor profiles.
I had dinner at Sky Cafe last year. It was delicious. After dinner, I bought peanuts and anchovies rempeyek to go. They are great with beer! Looking forward to going back soon.

I have to say your channel is hands down the best food channel out there, you keeping up with authenticity and meeting all these passionate chefs/restaurant owners. Your pronunciation on the foods' name doesn't go unnoticed, it's good asf, showing that you have the respect for the food and what not 🙏
I love that you're actually just out there hitting up places that aren't super famous or well known and giving them some shine. I haven't loved the aesthetic of some of your videos but what you're doing is undeniable
I'm an Indonesian who is not really into spicy Padang/Aceh food (I prefer the sweeter Javanese/Sundanese food even though I am pure Batakese and Mediterranean/Western food), but I do admit that rendang is just *IRREPLACEABLE.* ❤ I would have a huge crave for it at least once a year. So glad that you like it, too!
Thank you for trying to know more of our food culture. You will appreciate it for sure and thank God, you have the chance to experience one of His creation
I live in Philly and have frequented that strip mall many many times. Hi Rob, I am from Jakarta Capital city of Indonesia, thank you for promoting our food, Padang Food is one of our best Cuisines, you should try Menadonese and Sundanese and Balinese Cuisines and lots more, oh ya also try Chicken, Beef, and lamb Satay.
Hi Rob. I just discovered your channel like a few days ago thanks to TH-cam’s algorithm. To be honest, I have never found the US especially the edgy and “seemingly expensive” place like New York as a travel destination, specifically for the foods. But ever since I discovered you, I wish, I really wish I live in NYC and then I’d be able to try all those places you’ve been to. I don’t know if I’d get a chance to go to the US (I live on the other side of the world where those Padang foods came from😊) but if I do, one day, I want to try every single place you put here on this channel. And those rendangs are a legit one I could say 😂 in here we have this belief that the darker the rendang, the better the taste. Subscribing now!!
Not all US food “expensive” per se, try out some southern grits , sausage and gravy biscuit, and close it down with a slice of pecan pies and a sip of southern ice tea , they all cheap and top notch
"nasi padang" with rendang, perkedel, sambal & boiled veg always be my comfort food after coming home late from 4+ hours of DJ gig. so good! glad you enjoy it too 🫶

not underpromoted. it just too heavy to consume without rice or bread
But be careful if you cook Padang cuisine with pork. You will be arrested
