  • Hello ladies and gents, so here another video explaining how to Alley Dock. Their really isn't an exact measure or precise method of how to because all truck are different and each steering wheels have different turning degrees/ratios. But practice makes perfect. Keep trucking and be safe.

    I don't usually comment on any videos but oh boy. This was a great instructional video. Extremely well explained for whoever is starting in this industry. The step by step and the why of every maneuver is what students need in order to successfully complete an alley dock. Thank you

    7 years late but this video is the best explanation I’ve found. Thank you for helping newbies like me better understand the technique. My First day was today and I spent 7 hours alone attempting alley backing at the terminal with no guidance, teaching myself. This will help me there tomorrow 😅

    This video is great ! just got my license 3 moths ago and I'm struggling with backing up. My main problem is knowing when to start my alley dock, which I appreciate the tip. Also how to correct when I over shot.

    you know what would be really helpful is seeing the tires turning at the actual turning points. video is great but it doesn't really help me if I can't see the wheels where their turning. I'm new at this. I'm getting the concept of it. your frickin awesome at banking up. I just need to see them wheels.

    Question, after your set-up, can I do a hard right and then do a hard left like an offset to angle my truck and then straighten my wheels and go straight back and once I feel like I am where I want to be do the hard right to start getting my truck into the spot? What do you think? Thanks

  • @ClaudeRains1948
    @ClaudeRains1948 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Good stuff ..but I watch all your videos & you changed your pull ups now instead of turning to the right to straighten your jack ..you now say pull up straight then get back under the trailer ….appreciate the knowledge

    Could I do this same maneuver with my tandems all the way back with the same steering technique?

  • @AlienByte1
    @AlienByte1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So in general regardless of the length of the trailer or the truck itself what do you recommend the most for your tandems to be? Like far behind? Or closer to your drive wheels? And thanks alot for this video the company am working for are all assholes and no-one wants to really teach me how to do it and I just got my cdl last week thats why I need help thanks:)

    • @user-lz7qf9tb2t
      @user-lz7qf9tb2t  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zeus Empire hi there. My recommendationis to keep the tandems legal. Meaning you will not slide them prior to docking/parking, unless a shopper or customer asks you to prior to pick up or delivery.
      My suggestion to you is always Keep an eye on the corner of the trailer (driverside rear of trailer). That should be your guide. I usually stick my head out and look or i open my door and stick my head out and look.
      Tty to use the back of the trailer as your guide, because moving your tandoms at a rest area isn't efficient or helping you learn how to park. I will do a video showing you what i mean about using the rear trailer as your guide. I hope this heps you a little.

    great video bro Sub you helped a new swift driver but watch your truck if I'm around you lol

  • @autumnjones9937
    @autumnjones9937 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    In the beginning did you start with your trailer tires in front of door 18

    • @autumnjones9937
      @autumnjones9937 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Or the end of your trailer in front of door 18

    • @user-lz7qf9tb2t
      @user-lz7qf9tb2t  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The end of my trailer was at dock no 19. My tires were in dock no 19.
      And now 10 years later i have learned to let the back of my trailer be my guide. And not my tires. I was taugh by my instructor to set up with my tires close to the cones. But thats not efficient or in my opinion the right way to learn how to ally dock. You see at the school you will be using the same truck to do your test. And at the DMV they are going to use cones. Thus the learning of where your tires will need to be when you set up and or where they need to be right before you start your alley dock. And for the purpose of simply passing the test, that may work.
      Now in real life;
      You will mostly likely not drive the same truck.
      Your spot to back into will have various obstacles. Such as no room in the front or the actual width of the hole is freakin tight as f@#$.
      So learning to let the back of the trailer guide you is the key.
      Now the other trick is to learn how to undo your alley dock and redo the alley dock as you back in. I am not talking about re-setting. What I am saying is different.
      Here is an example of what I am trying to convey.
      When you pour a milk or water into a cup. You are letting the stream guide you. And you are also watching the level (how quickly it fills up) guide you. You adjust as needed.
      Okay, so the same thing is going on when you back in. (There is a time you want to pivot more and there is a time you need to back up just a bit more and visa versa).
      I probably confused you but thats the key. Understand and practice this and you will never have a problem.
      Okay so As you start to back in and you begin your alley dock by turning your steering wheel all to the right. You need to undo this depending where the end of your trailer is heading towards.
      I am going to make a vid that demonstrates this. Perhaps it will help.

    Aye bro I have a question... when you're turning your wheel to the left and the right are you turning your steering wheel as you back or coming to complete stops before u turn the steering wheel again?... that's my main problem with alley docking. Please help a brutha out lol

    • @user-lz7qf9tb2t
      @user-lz7qf9tb2t  7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      hey calvin,
      you can do both. I came to a complete stop for filming purposes. But typically For me, i turn the wheel before i even come to a complete stop. but that's because I've done it hundredths of times and its just natural at this point for me. I would say for you come to a stop and turn your wheel then start your maneuver. Here is a tip of awareness for you: the reason no one can tell anyone the exact point one of when and when you should turn your wheel is because every semi has a different turning radius. no two trucks are alike. and also the trailers are different lengths and the tandems are located at different points. therefore every truck has different turning ratios and points.
      all this means is the they are all different. some turn very fast and quickly and some hardly turn and take longer.
      My advice is learn your turn or practice on your truck as much as possible. learn it till you can say you got it down. then and only then can you jump on a different cab and practice on that one and it will seem easier but a bit different. But it will be easier then the first one. practice practice and practice. make the mistakes now so tomorrow you don't have too.
      be safe and keep rolling.

      Thank u bro I truly appreciate the quick response and I'm extremely grateful for the advice. It's much needed!! Your videos are the best and have helped me out a lot. I think I'm gonna come to complete stops until I'm able to alley dock with ease. Thanks again bro!!

      reflexreaction when I have plenty of room on my right then I get as close as 6 ft you know 10 ft because I have plenty of room on my right for my tractor to swing. But when I have very little room like a property line or a fence then I drive as close as a foot. You'll have to be very careful with the swing of your backend trailer, as it backs into the hole. It can hit a fairing or mirror or trailer. If your new. Get out and look. Always get out and look.
