  • A very special locomotive today - the behemoth of a steam engine, the "Challenger" type. As it happens, my Grandfather was born and grew up in America, in Upstate NY - while there, he developed a fascination with the railroad which went through town - the Delaware and Hudson. We even have some film he took of the railroad in his hometown, including a fantastic shot of a Challenger rushing by at speed - included at the opening and end of this video!
The model is an amazing piece of personal and railroad history - so I hope you enjoy seeing it.

My great uncle ran Challengers for the D&H from Binghamton NY up to Albany NY

IIRC, this Challenger is from a early 1990's release that has the NMRA RP-25 wheel flanges, and a can motor inside the boiler. Sold by Model Expo. & superior to the "Pizza-cutter" flanges, & motor in the cab, that was prevalent in older Rivarossi locos... :)

I would say that these were "exclusively" freight locomotives. In all the media available on these engines I've never seen a photo of one hauling a passenger train.

Amazing footage from years ago. Challenger sure is a great loco. I missed my chance to buy one brand new for £65 two years ago. Kicking myself now.
Seeing the motion in operation looks great.
Reminds me of some great footage on YT of 'UP 844 Highball at 75mph'.
You might enjoy that if you haven't already seen it.

Clinchfield DRGW and maybe even GN had some... C&O had similar engines... plus N&W had 2-6-6-4 engines... a 4-6-6-4 in PRR tuscan red roof would look neat..

I too have an Oneonta connection, lived there for several years in the 70's and model, of course, the D & H. The world's largest roundhouse was in Oneonta, 52 stalls completed in 1916. They had to swap out the turntable for the challengers and were able to do it in one day. Jim Shaunnesy's book on the D & H should be in your library as well as Jim Loudon's book entitled "The Oneonta Roundhouse." I have a brick from the roundhouse I collected in 1972. Nice looking engine. There is one on eBay for sale, and I am tempted. Nice job on the video, and nice to see a comment from Dangerous Dave. While in Oneonta, I did see the Alco PA's and Stourbridge Lion replica, the first steam loco to operate in the US....alas it only lasted a few days, too heavy for the lightweight rail.

the Challenger footage must have been filmed in 1940 at the earliest because the first D&H challenger was made in 1940

That is one badass locomotive. That thing in real life could pull at least over 100 cars. Let alone the BIG BOY.

Model Military Aviation, the BIG BOY was neither the biggest, strongest nor most powerful steam engine.

The D&H is my favorite railroad too! My grandmother use to live about 100 yards from the tracks as the trains would leave Oneonta. across the tracks from the old Doo Line Station (scenic rail ride).

My favorite railroad The Spokane Portland and Seattle had some Challengers as well. I wish they were produced in N scale I could use an excuse to buy one.

Somewhat envy you for being able to have a model of a D&H Challenger. I live near what used to be the D&H mainline, which now is owned by Canadian Pacific RR. (However Oneanta is about 2 hours north of me) I think MTH makes Challengers & I plan to customly paint my own D&H one as I was never able to see one in action. Your grandfather is quite lucky to see them before they were scrapped way back.

Beautiful loco. I own 2 of of what I would call 'the big three', a Mallet and the Big Boy, but haven't yet found a Challenger. Also own a J class in Norfolk and Western livery. Something about US steamers which i find awe-inspiring.

I don’t think this is the challenger because the UP made the original challenger, the challenger UP is a little brother to the big boy because it’s the same as big boy but with 3 3 instead of 4 4

Challengers are a name based on the wheel arrangement 4-6-6-4 not by the railroad.

Unfortunately, no D&H Challengers were saved. All were scrapped, serving out their last days in the early to mid 50s.

Yes, I think 1953 was the last year, and it might have been a Pacific that was the "last of the Mohicians" if you excuse the pun, Cooperstown is just up the road from Oneonta.

Its sad that none of those steam engines were saved, and only two of Union Pacific's challengers were saved.
