@@MatthewEverhard BTW, thank you for the plug you gave me on your Channel. That was very kind, I've watched your content for a long time and have been greatly blessed by it. 👍 Love to have you on the channel sometime.
I came here via Matthew’s post about your review. I’m glad I did. This is the type of ecumenicalism that is helpful. Brothers from 2 different tribes making fair and loving reviews. Thanks @John! ❤
Wondering review! I'm reformed Baptist and listen to Pastor Matthew all the time! He's solid as a rock and teaches in the most humble pastorly way! Love him!
Hey there! As somebody else that is not a Presbyterian but have really really been blessed by Worshiptainment, Everhard’s channel as well as your channel it was great to see your review. Definitely the first time I’ve watched a review video for a book that I have already devoured. I hope you both continue doing what you’re doing.
I play drums for our church so you know I'm good with contemporary music but the content of so much of the songs today are woefully lacking. They are all about the feels (self).
Thanks for this book review. I’ve watched Matthew Everhard for years and everything you said about his book is what I figured would be in there. Love that brother and his dedication to the gospel. Thanks for the info.
@@The_OG_MP so glad I could help! Matthew is a great guy, love his stuff. I may disagree slightly with him on some minor issues, but I still love his stuff 👍
Thank you so much. Good perspective. I attend a Calvary Chapel near where I live in Quakertown PA and I really appreciate both the music and the method of preaching. Something I discovered recently is a guy named Xandr Stok, a musician and his wife who have a channel called Project of Love. An accomplished musician, he got saved a couple years ago after being rescued miraculously from a deep depression. After this he dedicated his talent to singing/playing the bible. He's been working his way through the bible ever since. He also makes the tablature available by download for free, to be used as worship. I've been tremendously blessed by his work.
One thumbs up! 😂 I'm a Baptist, but many years ago, I actually attended a Calvary Chapel work down here in Belize. Only place preaching the word out in the bush where I was. I'm remain grateful for that ministry to this day. Thanks for the review.
Good job John. I watch Matthew as well and have been blessed by so much of his content. I havent read the book, so I can't comment on specifics but it seems to me that you have been more than fair. It probably shouldn't surprise any of us that a Reformed Presbyterian (and I'm largely in that camp myself) is arguing for the Regulative Principle of worship. But I think you were more than fair in expressing your concerns.
@@dougrichardson5275 thank you so much Doug! I have no problems with his take on the situation! The fact that was the only negative I had with the book is a testament to how much I liked it!
I’m a member of the non-instrumental churches of Christ and I really enjoy your channel. I agree with you, some of my favorite worship songs come directly from scripture. I’ll have to give Matthew’s book a read. My denomination has always warned about the entertainment factor of worship. At times maybe a little too much so. We sing mostly hymns anyway. I like your point that being old-fashioned merely for old-fashioned’s sake or being stuck on a certain way of doing things can be detrimental to true worship also.
Thank you for this interesting review. It's really good you reflect on the book (which sounds interesting) with the perspective of your own worship background.
John Miles, i used to listen to as much of the Christian contemporary music as i could. But a lot of it is bad. So i like the hymns now. Pastors, prophets, etc... are false teachers as well. You are a breath of fresh air. Do not change. Subscribed
How about a review of the novel "The Good, The Bad, and The Forgiven" by Tim the Idahoan (who also has some wonderful sung renditions of Psalms on his channel)? It's an attempt to teach theology in a western.
With regard to the “over regimented” elements of worship and that leading to “going through the motions”. This was something my wife and I discussed when we changed from Baptist to Presbyterian. All Presbyterian churches I have been a part of have used bulletins that outlined the elements of the worship service. No Baptist church that u have been a part of did this. In every church, there is the risk of “going through the motions” and although the Baptist churches never wrote it down and passed out a bulletin… the churches still followed a standard flow in the worship service. My point being - writing it down does not make it bad. Having a decent and in order service is not a bad thing. Letting our heart stray away from loving God is a bad thing. There is nothing about written documents or standard orders that cause us to stop loving God. Many grew cold in the Baptist churches as well…
Like hymns and old songs, some new songs are good, and some are not so good. Some musicians are skilled and play appropriately and some don’t. Ever hard has opinions as do most people. Same as it ever was.
Good feedback. Coming from a PCA church and the Reformed culture, it often comes to mind that God desires our hearts, not lip service. Looking forward to seeing future videos. Is the Calvary denom. part of the Assembly of God? God bless 🕯
@@jesseliddell4472 thank you! Technically Calvary Chapel is non-denominational. They originally came out of the FourSquare movement. It was started by Chuck Smith who had grown tired of a lot of the gimmickry in the Pentecostal world. Calvary chapel's are basically somewhere between a Baptist and a charismatic church.
Very well said, John! I believe whole heartedly that each song needs examined for its theology. It’s a tough because some of these large churches putting the music out are theologically off course, but I believe God can use their songs. I also follow Matthew and while I haven’t read the book yet, he is a staunch Calvinist and Presbyterian evangelist. However, even with my theological disagreements with him, I do appreciate a lot of his content as well.
10:38 I mean....... wouldnt be the worst! XD Good review, thank you for this. I haven't gotten the book yet, I plan to eventually, but I have so many books to read lol As someone who is COntinentally Reformed (Dutch Reformed), I would probably agree with his solution. Unless he said the solution is to be apart of a Presbyterian denomination in exclusion to other Reformed Churches, which would be weird if he did say that.
@@puritanpioneer1646 😂 I figured you wouldn't lol. It's a good read, it's short too, it only took about three hours to listen to on audible. He didn't say explicitly to become a Presbyterian, it was more the system he advocated for. Honestly it wasn't a bad system, I just think that his reasons for it was putting too much emphasis on the Westminster confession rather than on what the Bible actually says. And in that case I think that the emphasis was placed too much upon opinion rather than on scripture. Just my opinion.
Yes, please do more of this type of video. I'm a Bible need like you. But knowing more about what others think theologically, helps sharpen my own thinking. Regarding "worshiptainment", your views are well balanced, as I have come to expect. Thanks. The only thing I would add is that beyond a song's lyrics is the issue of the music itself. Although there's room for individual tastes--some music moves some people closer to Jesus, but not others. However, music can also be objectively good or bad in how it affects one's mood and/or body's cells, heart rate, etc. Good music makes the beat subordinate to the melody, avoids dissonance (clashing of sounds), avoids repeated use of syncopation (& ideally also has harmony).
@@dougbaker2755 well said, I think that's what personal preference can come in. Some music might be less beneficial to others. It's no different in our own secular music taste, I may prefer some music that other people don't. I'll definitely be making more reviews like this in the future.
Jesus says that 'the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth' (Jn.4:23-24). And, '...the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life' (Jn.6:63). Worshipping God in the flesh, and in error, is not worship at all. When your 'flesh' likes it, prefers it, and desires it, God does not! Worldly music in churches is 'ungodly' and 'profane' (1Tim.6:20, 2Tim.2:16).
How could you say that the Catholic church is idolatrous when the church historically has always used those things in worship and even the arch of the covenant and the temple had the same kind of art work?
Yeah i agree with more psalms in the worship service. Id get rid of all bethel hillsong or elevation music and many ministries including G3 and good fight ministries say to stay away from these groups. Sovereign grace and gettys have good music. I also like alot of what majesty music has done.
Most USA churches nowadays are too modern and music/bands are worshipped rather than God in my honest opinion. People want to be entertained, no repentance, blood or cross carrying. I’m not a Calvinist, by the way.
