I purchased a 2012 Subaru Impreza hatchback second hand in 2018 with 50K miles. The CVT transmission gave out at 101K miles, less than 1500 miles out of warranty, and Subaru offered me $500 towards the fix. At the time my vehicle was worth $8K (pre transmission issue) and it would’ve cost $7500 to replace the transmission since it was not fixable. Subaru extended the warranty on those cars from 60K miles to 100K miles and even reduced the oil change interval recommendations because they knew how poor they were. Long story short that was my last Subaru and the last car i’ll purchase with a non-hybrid CVT transmission.

Doesn't help that automakers are purposely deceptive about their CVT's & the "lifetime fluids" in it. Lifetime of the 60K powertrain warranty is more like it. You have to drive them a certain way (relatively gently/subdued) & change the CVT fluid every 20-30K miles if you expect them to last longer-term. Some of the belt/chain CVT designs are better than others, but the rules still apply really on how you need to treat them. Better to buy a hybrid with a completely different design "eCVT" (no belt/chain) if you are going to get something with a "CVT".

CVT is great for the right purpose. I prefer them for the following reasons:
    1. More efficient - That’s why they are getting more common because they reduce fuel consumption.
    2. Continuous drive - No power gap which occurs during an auto/manual gear change. My wheels are always driven.
    3. Smooth - I particularly enjoy descending hills with adaptive cruise control engaged because the vehicle doesn’t have to brake.

    Manual 18 Forester owner.
My wife's CVT Outback feels disconnected from the road, and from the engine.
That said, we did a 900 mile trip, at 80mph on open farm-field-surrounded windy flatlands, with four humans, a 70lb dog, loaded to the ceiling....and got 31.8 mpg at the pump doing it. CVTs WORK, but are not for the enthusiast.
I'll also say her car is CRAZY quiet, quieter than my manual forester, which I spent $400 and over ten hours sound deadening. The CVT allows the engine to run at damn near idle, vs 3k rpm on the highway, so the drive train noise is much less invasive into the cabin.
I do question the towing capacity of the car too.
Also, by using the paddle Shifters and downshifting, you can force the CVT into the higher Rpms, therefor putting the car into the power band, and scratching the "pull and power" itch.
That said, I'll have a manual until the government says I'm not allowed to anymore, because the government gets everything right...

    • @midnitestate

I did what you're saying. I had a key assault to CvT in it. And it does feel pretty disconnected. But at least that one was too, like a regular automatic. So it sounded like and felt like a normal automatic most of the time. And I agree with the whole towing situation since I understand in SUVs that they use a slightly heavier duty belt and a few other components in the CVT to allow it to tow And be able to take the higher power engines that are easily in those vehicles. But I would rather want a standard automatic in that way so you can manually change the gears and have it be a lot more durable than doing so.

That said, if you drive it the way it's meant to be driven, you can get an excellent economy while also having a smooth power delivery and just make sure you're constantly changing the fluids properly like any transmission. That said, it's not for everybody, but I personally enjoy the vehicles I've driven with this cvt. I don't drive very fast anyway.

Both our vehicles have CVTs. I actually prefer them over a conventional automatic, for a couple of reasons. They are smoother and quieter in operation than a conventional automatic. In the case of my Venza (eCVT), it is far less complicated and much more reliable than any other transmission available. Aside from reliability issues, most people don't like CVTs because of the way most enthusiast reviewers hate on them. Many people think they suck because their favorite reviewers said they suck.

I like them because they are smooth. Lots of vehicles have a slightly jerk or change in power when they shift- not a problem with CVT’s.
The speed limited goes from 35 to 55, you start to lean into the gas to accelerate. You are a quarter on the throttle, at 45 MPH, and it shifts can then you stop gaining speed- you have to press the gas more. That is why I love CVT’s- more specifically eCVT’s.

I had a 2016 Subaru Forester with a CVT and replaced it with a 2024 Mazda CX-50 with a 6-speed auto. Both non-turbo. Even though the CX-50 is faster 0-60, likely because of the traditional gear launch advantage you mention, the Forester felt more powerful in regular driving, probably because it's always in the power band, not hunting gears or waiting for a downshift. I 100% agree that a traditional automatic, or DCT, is absolutely better paired to more powerful engines. But for small, low power engines, I think CVT might be a better driving experience. 2017 Subaru Forester XT was a brilliant car, it was fast, fuel efficient (for a brick) and quiet. Acceleration was smooth, she'd pull every launch and I never once felt a CVT rubber banding effect that people talked about. Fast Forward 170,000 km and on the 3rd CVT we sold it. Now the CVT in a Toyota Yaris, is a slushy POS, that's where I felt the rubber band effect, lack of power, lots of noise. I had to put it into simulated manual mode to make that car go anywhere at anything above a snails pace.
The car I have now (Suzuki) has a traditional gearbox and I really miss the smoothness and performance of the Subaru CVT, I think it would get more kpl too.

To me, our 2022 Subaru Legacy Limited XT performs just fine for what is. It's a family sedan with some b@lls, not a sports sedan. I think the Subarus without turbo are slugs and the CVT stands out more with them but people love them anyway. The 10-speed automatic in my 2019 Mustang GT, on the other hand, sucked, and some other 'modern' automatics we've owned have had their own quirks.

Want to find out the reality of a Subaru CVT value? Simply take the one that you own, any model with the CVT and try to trade it in. My CVT Subaru lost trade in value far more than my earlier transmission model Subarus that were also much better off road.

I'm satisfied with the CVT in my Encore GX. The VT-40 in the GX is a night and day difference versus the VT-25 (VTi) that GM came out with two decades ago. I had a 2004 Saturn ION with the VTi, which would sometimes hesitate to launch. That said, I might still rank the Saturn's CVT above the Ford DCT that was in the Focus.

CVT’s are fine and work well. Most people view and drive their cars like an appliance. Others appreciate their cars for various reasons or purposes. People who enjoy driving tend to maintain the car, understand and use features, and enjoy the interaction between driver and vehicle. I personally don’t want a CVT. Even the faux paddle shifters give a sense of being part of the car.✌️

A CVT by good manufacturers (such as Honda, Toyota, and Subaru) can be reliable if taken care of, with proper maintenance and not harsh acceleration. A CVT won't be reliable if it's made like Nissan, for example, or any German brands, or any American brands, even with care, they will fail early and be costly to replace. You can find a good car with a CVT transmission, it's a matter of knowing what to look for and what to avoid
