    A few years ago, I had a Subaru Impreza with a manual trans, and now I own a Mazda 3 2.5 GS FWD. IMO, the Mazda 3 is better for the following reasons:
    - More power
    - Better real-world fuel economy
    - Much better steering feel on center
    - Nicer interior
    - Better ergonomics
    - Better infotainment and interface
    - More reliable
    - Better transmission. The clutch on the Subaru was horrible.
    The only thing that the Impreza had over the Mazda is a more refined suspension. Unless you live down a fire-route in Alaska, look at a Civic or Mazda 3.

    I've had the Subaru RS for a few months and I'm very happy with it. As far as the infotainment screen, I would prefer a couple more physical buttons for the a/c controls, but I've gotten used to it. But at least it doesn't stick up on top of the dash like you see in hondas and toyotas. Drives great and looks great, definitely a subby fan, but the Mazda seems like a good car too.

      I got a RS with option for the same price as the base rs. 28.7k. There are some subaru stories in new england selling it under msrp, and I gotta say, the car is really good. I don't regrar it at all, the car rides and handles well and you can have fun with even with the CVT. And you can add some services with the app, so you can remote start it with you phone, which is a really good feature (6 months free, after that $4,99 month), and is worth it, you get access to more stuff as well.

    These two along with a corolla hatch are my 3 choices to get after my 2013 Impreza Sport Lim.
    Impreza would be best for my camping and quite quiet and smooth driving, but it's cvt is hilarious when stepping on it and the huge tablet infotainment seems like a liability for distracted driving, along with worst mpg because it's full awd only. Cloth seating is also harder to clean.
    Corolla has a physical first gear in combo with it's cvt and not awd only, so it has better 0-60 and has great mpg, along with a decent physical/touch combo in it's infotainment. Probably the easiest to clean out of the 3. Downsides is it quite cramped toward the rear seating/cargo and it's a louder ride.
    Mazda is a "true" auto that gets a turbo on higher trims, decently more speedy. Physical only infotainment isn't an issue considering my 2013 imp is just a physical radio. Best highway driving. Downside is thin paint and more expensive/luxurious, wouldn't want to take it camping.
    So torn, but I have time to decide since I'm still saving some more before I buy.

    I came from a 2013 impreza and since not much has really changed (I got to try the 24 Impreza RS as a loaner), here were my takes:
    Impreza - Not enough power, albeit smoother ride. The infotainment is still laggy and distracting to use unless you're at a stop. Decent size and mileage with a larger gas tank.
    Mazda3 - Better power and handling but a rougher ride. Infotainment is so much easier and responsive, especially with Carplay/Android Auto. Smaller backseat so not ideal if you have backseat passengers and the small tank size means you'll be a regular at the gas station, especially if you get the Turbo.
    In the end I went for the Mazda3 Premium Plus (Turbo). Aside from the tank size and slightly rougher ride, it handles and drives so much better than the numb feel of the Impreza.

    it's Funny My wife has the Mazda, and i have the Subaru and I'm writing this at 5:33 in the Video and there seems to be a heavy Bias on your part for the Mazda, now i having owned Both and having bought the Subaru for myself. I'm shocked how you lean so hard to the Mazda, Now Don't get me wrong i like my wife's Mazda i think BOTH are Steps up from the Toyota and Honda and a HUGE Step up from the Nissan (i traded a Sentra SV 2016 to get my Impreza) Now I'm a Big Guy just under 6' tall and weight 350ish, and i can barely get into my wife's Mazda, whereas getting in and out of my Impreza is EASY !! I find the seats a bit hard and uncomfortable on the Mazda, and like a glove in my Subaru, feeling more like a Sport seat, and i think the Video Screen in the Mazda was an Afterthought the way it awkwardly sticks up out of the dash Rather than the Big Screen or 2 Screens in the Base that looks like the Dash was designed for it. I find the Dials on my wife's system awkward and clumsy, where my touch pad is easy and direct and your complaint with the lightness i don't get maybe you didn't have it adjusted properly, i had to frankly turn mine down. I do have to ask what you reviewers drive, because everyone complains about the power of the Subaru, and i don't get it, my Subaru would have my Nissan for LUNCH and the Boxer Engine is what Porsche Uses and what i used in a 1967 VW that scared the hell out of small block V8's, Now i will grant you the CVT Tranny vs a manual transmission sucks, but the stick isn't available till you go WRX I'm told, But i admit i am bias, i love my Subaru and i do like the looks of Both, but think the 2024 Subaru Impreza is a bad ass looking little hatchback makes me think of the rally cars that helped make subaru famous.

    I wasn’t expecting such a polarized response in the comments. I test drove both recently and came away with the opinion that they were both very good.
    The Mazda feels better and I preferred the drivetrain.
    The Subaru has better sight lines and I fit in it.
    Much as I liked the Mazda, the roof line was way too low and there’s very little leg room in the rear. As someone who is 6’3” and frequently drives with passengers, that was a dealbreaker. I’d not enjoy being hunched over in the rear seat for more than a few minutes.
    The other factor that helped the Subaru is they had a model available within a months wait. Some of the others were quoting 5 to 16 month wait times. The local Toyota dealer openly told me they weren’t taking orders anymore. People seem to be holding used inventory hoping someone will pay MSRP for a year old with 20,000 km. Hopefully things go back to normal soon.

      I agree. I just test drove both and was pleased with both. Your thoughts matched up with mine. The room isn't a factor for me as I am 5'10" and hardly ever have passengers. Really enjoyed driving both cars and they each have tiny trade offs. Having trouble deciding which one to get. The plus side for the mazda was better fuel economy and a little more nimble and a touch faster. The major downside to mazda is that terrible rotary knob for entertainment screen.

      @minnybiker4505 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I will never understand this line of thought... CVT is faster than the 6-spd auto, smoother than the 6-spd auto, yet somehow less fun. If you can acknowledge that a steady engine note means the engine is at its optimum power band, and the CVT is doing the adjusting to best use that power... Vs the engine having to go in and out of its power band to adjust for the set-gear transmission, which is less quick and less efficient... We might finally get past the CVT-sucks nonsense.

      @@minnybiker4505 I see, I can try to explain my take then. For a car that is to be used as an appliance, it makes perfect sense. Which is why I don’t have beef with them. I just wouldn’t consider it in a car built to entertain. Not just because of the drone under acceleration but because of how they respond. A gear has a linear feeling. When the torque converter locks up, there’s a direct connection between the throttle and your acceleration. Enthusiasts love that feeling, therefore, most don’t like CVTs. Like most things, they have a purpose, being fun just isn’t one.

    interestingly enough, he also complained about the Mazda 6-speed transmission, as often not being in the correct ratio... something the Subaru CVT solves. (And it's faster).

My other car is a bugeyes WRX wagon and the RS is a fun, über comfortable and practical daily driver. Mazda 3 is too small for me with limited visibility but it’s a great compact.

    • @Realistick
      @Realistick  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I didn’t complain about it being slow at any point… I said it disappoints because of power delivery. I replied to you on a previous comment in more detail but it’s not just the noise. An automatic can lock the torque converter onto a gear, which results in a direct response from the throttle. Enthusiasts like that and assists in a car feeling “linear.” As a basic commuter, a cvt is great and you won’t hear me complain. In a car marketed as fun, and when compared alongside a mazda3, it’s a drawback.

    As a grocery-getter / daily-driver, the Impreza is the best if you care about having rear passengers. If you want to sacrifice space for fuel, get a corolla hatchback. I feel like this puts the M3 in a weird spot. It has similar storage to the Impreza but costs $1000 more for a terrible rear seat. Personally, I am willing to deal with the additional maintenance of AWD for the more versatile interior.

      @adamsloane1748 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Your statement about car enthusiasts is, like most generalizations about people, wrong. I am not a "car enthusiast," but I want a manual. I am currently driving a 2006 Honda Civic--not tricked out or altered in any way. I view a car as transportation, and am about as far from an "enthusiast" as one could be. Nevertheless, I prefer the feeling of control and the level of interaction that I get with a manual. I also love not having to worry about kids stealing my car (since most joy riders can't drive stick). My beef with manufacturers is that even the ones who still sell manuals supply so few of them that it's really hard to get them. I have been trying to get a manual Honda hatchback for a couple of years now. Very few are sent to the places I live, and those that do show up at dealers go out the door really fast.
