- Classic Game Room reviews the Japanese Sega Saturn model HST-3200 released in 1994. This is the original Sega Saturn boys and girls, the one that came out with the first gen Sega Saturn styling and the read light on the front (with additional venting). Colored grey with blue buttons this makes a fun collector piece and outputs NTSC video for use on Western television sets, it is relatively easy to play Japanese Sega Saturn games on an American Saturn with the Action Replay cart. After 20 years, Sega Saturn is still my favor console of ALL time! It is the perfect console for 2D fighting game fans with its excellent 6 bottons layout & super awesome D-pad controller, it is something any controller fighting game fans cannot live without!

i bought my japanese saturn in japan for like $40 5 years ago and it still works pretty good to this day. and i got countless great fighters and beat em ups

I bought my JP Saturn in Japan. I lived in Japan from 2000-02, and I just moved back a year ago. I remember in October 2001, the Super Potato in Osaka had a whole stacked pile of brand new white Saturns for only $50 (5,000 yen). I should have bought one then, but I didn't have the money. I later bought my white Saturn used at a books and media store (similar to Book Off). It was fairly good condition. (I returned the first one I bought because it REEKED of tabacco!)

All sega consoles are great, but the sega saturn always has a special place in my heart. As I was 12 (1998) I ended up buying a ps1 because it had a lot more games and the saturn was already dead in the west. I do not regret it, but sometimes I think “what if I bought it back in 1998? Would I be a different gamer than I ended up being?”

I'm from Argentina. Mark you say in the video that a US Saturn is cheaper, but basing in what I've seen on Ebay, american saturn is more expensive than the japanese one. I got a japanese saturn on ebay for U$S80, while an american one is U$S+150.
Same thing in Brazil. And some japanese models are on free shipping, crazy thing.

I just got mine a couple days ago. And I got the pro action replay separately. Now I can play sega saturn games from all regions! :D

ive got a western one that's been converted to play Japanese and American still works like a trooper :) after 17 years , I love my Saturn

Such a simple design but still a sexy looking console.
Since people are asking for examples, one game I know won't work on a US Saturn without a region switch is the Japanese release of King of fighters 95. It needs its own special Ram cart, so you can can't use the action replay cart
I absolutely love my Sega Saturn. So many great 2d games on it and unique games from that era. It definitely is worth getting the action replay cart and getting RGB video out of it to play Radiant Silvergun and other great shooters in all their glory.

Got my model 1 Japanese SEGA Saturn some years ago and got as much excitement looking at the pack in newspaper in the box Then I bought a model 2 US Saturn, after it stopped working correctly...
I'll watch your reviews even if it's something I don't care in the least about.. like a japanese sega saturn.. simply because you are so entertaining...

The games are region encoded. You can download and burn a Utopia Boot Disk (google it) that will allow you to play American games. The Japanese console I bought happened to be modded luckily enough.
I just rubber band the lid detector thing, so it doesn't stop the game spinning with the lid open. I put in a normal game, and once it's past the Saturn splash just put in whatever else. It'll work without fail.
People say on a model 2 like mine that the drive gets damaged doing this, so take care not to damage it. I know I could just fix mine or buy another one.
I bought a boxed Victor RG-JX2 from Japan and its awesome!
With just a rubber band, I modified my U.S. Saturn to run any region games. My copy of Groove on fight works perfectly along with the expansion RAM.
Love Sega Saturn! Still is my most favor game console all time for I am a super fan of 2D fighting games!

Ahh the sega saturn it's still one of my favorite consoles.Mostly for what it did with 2D mark and it has aged well to,so congrats getting a 2nd one that will make a good back up.

Never saw the point of owning a NA Saturn with the Action Replay cart. Almost all the best games worth owning were Japanese exclusives, a few of which require their own Rom cart to play(which means you are screwed playing them on a NA Saturn if you rely on the Action Replay cart). Furthermore, the cost of the NA Saturn and Action Replay cart is about the same as a Japanese Saturn.
plus even with the action replay games like samurai showdown 4 don't run smooth

Funny how 10 years ago there was no reason to import a Saturn unless you really liked the specific colour scheme since buying a US Saturn and a action replay would be cheaper.. nowadays it's actually cheaper to import a Japanese Saturn with an action replay 😂
I have a US saturn and a pro action replay plus. The plus version is also a 4mb ram so it allows the gamer to play games like Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter on a US console
The controllers are the same and are interchangeable between US and JP Saturns. However, the first gen Saturn control pad was a bit thicker, and they abandoned that design for the slimmer JP version. (The same thing happened with the Xbox.) As to which one to buy, if it looks like you will be playing more imports, then just get a JP Saturn and use an ST-Key or Action Replay Plus cartridge to play domestic games.

the saturn posses some of the best japanese exclusive games. no wonder the saturn was a beast in japan back in the days. dodonpachi....never heard of this game...it's time do to a an ebay search

Don't need the action replay as you can just do an easy solder on the motherboard and change the region of your choice. There is also a action replay card with 4mb ram included so you can play every japanese game (as if you use the import cart without ram you can't change it to ram cart after booting the game to my knowledge).

I don't have a japanese saturn, but I do have a CIB saturn with an EXTREMELY low s/n and two pre-release dreamcast rental consoles.

the one he has is the cheeper model 2 usa saturn that does not have the cd drive LED light. Mine is the older model and looks like the japanese saturn but is black. and also has the glossy led covers. and I play japanese saturn games on it all the time useing a simple conver cart even though i have a japan saturn.
The Japanese model looks better. It's not as bland. Actually, I really like it.
I'm normally not a big fan of all-black console designs, but it just somehow works really well on the Saturn.
Regardless, I agree that the blue-accented grey console design is the best of the three main looks (i.e. not including the V-Saturn, Hi-Saturn, or "This Is Cool" Skeleton Saturn).
I think he is in there in the Space Arcade with Mark because last time he was protecting Sega from a rocket, he went to space.

I cannot fathom the appeal of having a sega saturn. I took so much shit as a kid for having only a Sega Saturn while everyone else was cracking open their brand new Xboxes and Gamecubes.

I have a white Saturn coming in the mail as well as some other consoles directly from Yahoo Auctions Japan.
It's actually a LOT cheaper to buy them there. (Using Shopping Mall Japan or similar.)
I got a Japanese 360 for ~100€ with shipping and many consoles for 1€.
Prices on there are really insane. You just have to buy a LOT of stuff to make the shipping worth it.

My friend got one along time ago and had his modded to play american games with the flip of a switch and I had mines moded to play japanies games so we could import games that never came to the U.S. man I miss those days. That was before gamestop took over the market.
The Sega Saturn was an okay console, but it didn't have that many Sonic the Hedgehog games for it. It only had 3 Sonic games:
1. Sonic Jam (A compilation disc packed with old-school Sonic Genesis classics).
2. Sonic R (A Sonic racing game).
And 3. Sonic 3D Blast (A 3D isometric action/adventure Sonic game).
One more thing: there was going to be a Sonic game called "Sonic X-Treme" for the Saturn, but the game was cancelled.

I own a sega dreamcast and a sega genesis so I am already in the cool club :)
I can verify that J-Saturns can play North American games by using a converter cartridge. I own only a J-Saturn and I use the ARP cart to play the few North American Saturn games that I own.
