The Sega Saturn Hardware Buyers Guide

  • An episode about the various styles and makes of Sega Saturn hardware.
    NOTES:
    Many of these systems have pack in games. Virtua Fighter Remix appeared in many of them.
    There are a few systems here that have different boxes and themes available. There are Xmas Nights and Sonic versions of the White Model 2 Saturn for instance.
    I tried to focus on the main entries for each type of system, and avoid nuances like pack in games, pack in peripherals, or special boxes.
    My launch grey Saturn shown in this video was bought day 1 when the system hit Japan. It cost me $700+ to get it next day.
    Of all my Saturn's(I own 8), the model 2 has been the most unreliable. I have had 2 fail. One with a CD drive, one with the mainboard.
    If you are just starting out with the Saturn, I recommend the grey Japanese system as your first purchase. They are cheap, reliable, and easy to find.
    The Samsung and Navi Saturn's are the last of the products I truly want in my collection. Price and availability being a major obstacle.
    I didn't mention it in the video, but the Western released Model 1 Saturn's came with a different controller than the launch Japanese units. This controller wasn't the worst, but the Japanese pad killed it overall.
    The Derby Stallion Saturn actually didn't have the game with it. It was released along side the game, and included a special sticker set.
    Music in this episode in order:
    Gain Ground - Awaken
    Ghouls N Ghost - Stage 1
    Batman - Intro
    Hang On GP - Albatross Cliff Reef
    Castlevania Bloodlines - Bloody Tears
    Contra Hard Corps - Hard Corp Blues
    Thunder Force V - Legendary Wings
    Shadow Dancer - Stage 2-1
    TMNT Hyperstone Heist - New York

    I've always wanted a Sega Saturn ever since I was a kid. And it blows my mind that the cartridge slot in the back didn't allow backwards compatibility with Sega Genesis games. What a missed opportunity.

    • @golangismyjam
      @golangismyjam 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      In the early technical specs it does mention something about the cartridge port being used for games it was just never implemented. My guess is they planned on using it for backwards compatibility whilst the Saturn was intended to be a 2d machine and abandoned it when they had to rush to add another processor after they saw the PlayStation specs.

    • @dqwno4900
      @dqwno4900 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They could have used the same cartridge slot as the Mega Drive, allowing for backwards compatibility. the Sound CPU could be used as the main CPU in Mega Drive games, but i’m unsure how the sound would work.

      As a RISC architecture, getting the Hitachi SH2 to handle code written for the CISC 68000 cpu of the Genesis would have been a difficult task on their tight schedule to get to market, especially considering those were early days for console emulators.

    Nice choice including that music track from Shadow Dancer. That's my favorite one in the game. I was reading the video description. Interesting the model 2 was less reliable for you. My model 1 US system, which I bought new, was always trouble. It went back to SoA twice for warranty repair. Then it worked for years, but no longer does. Funny how I ended up with an early PS1 that should have skipping problems but it never gave me trouble. My model 2 Saturn that I got used a few years back is acting up now with power-supply issues.

    Never was a Sega fan and then I found your channel at the start of covid and now they're my favorite games company. I'm now a happy owner of a modded Genesis Mini, Dreamcast with a MODE, and my favorite of all, a white Sega Saturn. Just saving up for a Satiator so I can Play Panzer Dragoon Saga! :) and now having been on the out side for so long I realize that as bad as the decisions Sega made were, the entire industry was really doing all they could to ensure Sega failed and I am lost as to why. Why didn't EA reverse engineer the Nintendo first? Why did publications slam Sega all the time to make people like me think wrongly they were lousy? I don't understand, but they're the best. I just graduated College and even applied for a job at Sega so fingers crossed I get it! :) all this to say, thank you! All the happiness Sega has given me has been because I stumbled into your channel and your passion rubbed of onto me

      Infinity2z3r0 I actually prefer the model 1 controller. I had the white model 2 Saturn for years and played with that controller and recently got the model 1 controller with my US model 1 I picked up on eBay. Going back and replaying the games I own I find the buttons to be more responsive and grip feels more comfortable. I find getting ahold of a Sega Saturn isn't the biggest issue. It's finding the games at a reasonable price. Some of the games cost as much as the console if not several times more. I am currently looking into flashing an Action Replay cart with Pseudo Saturn so I can play backups. It's pointless to own a Saturn if you can't even play half the library available.

      Zaku Guriin it's not hard to do just need a screw driver, some tape and a pro action replay that you wouldn't mind being erased. Note that I think after the soft mod to the pro action it will not work as a memory card but still works as a 4mb etc ram cart.Barring winning the lottery, it was the only way I was going to get to play panzer dragoon saga and it was well worth it. Also note if you are getting if for Saga you will need to find roms that allow you to switch CDs as most easily available ones didn't work for me. Good luck and have fun !!

    Given all Saturns use the same video encoder (oddly enough a Sony part), I doubt there is any real difference in video output between models, Its not like the Mega Drive where Sega kept changing the encoders. At most there may be a bit more noise in the later models as the system was redesigned and made more compact.
    I personally have a PAL model 1 which has a switchless mod to let me play NTSC games without converters at the proper speed. The thing to remember about the Saturn is that due to the library being quite import heavy, American or PAL units are going to need a 4in1 cart to get the most out of the library, which of course adds to the overall cost, as well as wear and tear of the system. A PAL system is also going to have issues running 60hz content at 50hz (sometimes its just slower gameplay and a squashed screen, other times its even things like stuttering music/video).
    While I do prefer the look of the western Saturn (no yellowing for a start), I would say most new owners would be best getting a Japanese Saturn , or a modified western one. Also important to note of course is that anyone in 230v land (Europe, Mideast, parts of East Asia, Australia) has to use a stepdown converter with a Japanese Saturn , unless they want to fry the system.
    Lastly, its also worth noting that PAL Saturns actually use different video cables than the NTSC versions, as the pinout on the AV port is different, so its important to get the right cable for the right region, as you could damage the system otherwise.

    • @brandonginsburg3120
      @brandonginsburg3120 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're telling me. I recently used a Saturn PAL SCART cable on my Saturn NTSC Model 1, and my Saturn died. Oddly, unless I'm remembering wrong (is there even a N64 JPN SCART cable?), using a N64 PAL SCART cable on my N64 NTSC console has been fine. Interesting to note is that the Saturn PAL SCART cable had missing pins whereas the N64 PAL one had them all.

    I'm really surprised the VCD card is worth as much as it is. I've purchased about four import Saturns throughout the years, the last being about three years ago, and all but one came with them inside. The only problem I've had with any of the units is the CD drive going out, and the replacements for certain models being impossible to come by these days. Fortunately, I was able to grab a Rhea and Phoebe to replace those to keep them going. I'd never heard of Model 1s having better visuals, either, and I've honestly never noticed a difference (I have a domestic and an an import model 1 along with several model 2s). The main thing left that I want is that Christmas Nights-themed slip cover for the white model 2s. I love the little logo in the corner, but it's becoming harder to come by.

    One last thing folks might want to bear in mind: if you're using a cart for region bypass, you won't be able to go past the first disc on multi-disc games. You'll need either a modded or proper region system to finish multi-disc stuff from other regions.

If the game prompts a save before the disc swap, you're fine. If it doesn't, that's when you're hosed. On the compilations, it's just a separate disc with other games, so it's fine.
