- On March 4, 2020, a fine azure-skied Wednesday, a Staten Islander News Organization staff writer and photographer walked together over the newly opened Goethals Bridge shared-use pedestrian and bike path. See the story that accompanies this video at statenislander....
While crossing, a freight train approached the bridge from New Jersey. After two ships passed, the Arthur Kill Vertical Lift Bridge lowered and a long train with four diesel-electric locomotives pulled many trash and fill half size piggy-back containers, as well as several intermodal containers. The rail line is operated by Norfolk Southern.
The Chemical Coast train line was connected to Staten Island's rails fairly recently. For over 100 years, the only rail connection from Staten Island was to Cranford Junction.
